Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Those Hanzo the Razor films are fantastic! The Snare was my favorite, this is one of the craziest movies, one of the craziest characters. The guy booby trapped the hell out of his own house! Has hidden sword panels in the bathroom, and really likes to fight people only wearing his underwear. He's a total date rapist though. It's kinda like Lone Wolf and Cub combined with Sherlock Holmes.
Totally 100% Awesome!
I just watch Dinner For Schmucks, good, exactly what the trailers make it out to be. Definitely the best performance from Steve Carrel.

Holy Crap! I just watched The Keep (1983)
I'm am excited that some 10 years later I rewatched this and enjoyed the fuck out of it. I have no clue whether it is a good movie or not, but who cares? Something like Herzog and Scott deciding to make a porno together using the 'land of dairy queen' commercials as inspiration. Totally failing of course, but their love child becoming the deformed cinematic beast that is 'THE KEEP'!!!! Amazing use of color that is of course butchered by the VHS transfer I saw. Tangerine Dream adds tremendously. The early 80's was the end of a certain era as far as films go. There aren't a lot of films after that period that I really enjoy. Quality isn't necessarily the right word, but The Keep (and another films from this era) manage something that looks both cheap as hell and is totally brilliant. My god, this isn't a great film, but it isn't like anyone else can pull off this sort of thing today.
Michael Mann, I salute you!

watched Inception yesterday and the remake of 'the day the earth stood still' today.
I dont see whats so hard to comprehend about Inception? At one point 2/3 into the movie my girlfriend said to me, "im lost, whose dream are we in now?" and I was like WTF? Loved the ending.
I havent watched the original 'the day the earth stood still', but watching the remake makes me want to. Keanu was born to play Clatu for sure. Dude has no facial expression ever so it was spot on

Good job taking one for the team! The original Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic, but it would take a lot of arm twisting to get me to see the remake.

Guys, go see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World if you give the slightest sh!t about small press independent authors getting some recognition in a world where Vampires Suck is allowed to get made. I'm not saying it's the be-all end-all of movies, but it's genuinely hilarious and deserves to at least break even.

Unless you want to basically watch one of the most painful violations of classic cinema being utterly shat all over in the worst possible way, avoid TDTESS remake like it was a toxic gas. One of my hollywood friends just said more or less the same. It's from the same director as Shawn of the Dead and that alone might make it worth seeing. I'm pretty ignorant of this franchise, but watching the film die a painful death at the theatre is really depressing. Pretty much how I felt with Fantastic Mr. Fox last year which I thought was a great wes anderson film.Minzoku wrote:Guys, go see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World if you give the slightest sh!t about small press independent authors getting some recognition in a world where Vampires Suck is allowed to get made. Re: Movies you've just watched
I saw Taken recently. Luc Besson rocked it again.
When his daughter is kidnapped in Paris by sex slave traders, desperation and rage drive former CIA agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) to the brink, forcing him to demonstrate "a very particular set of skills... acquired over a long career". Let's boil that down to two words: KICK ASS. Just about anyone who stands in his way regrets it.
In particular, the last 30 minutes is one real hell of a ride which makes even some bloody R-rated action movies look tame thanks to the pacing of the action. Don't let the PG-13 rating put you off.

Kinect? KIN NOT.
Re: Movies you've just watched
I enjoyed Taken, but I'd need to see it again in a different context to comment fairly on it.
Just saw an international film some might like if they enjoy both survival films and prisoner of war films. 'As far as my feet will carry me', is a film about a german prisoner of war escaping from Siberia. Not necessarily fantastic, but I enjoyed what I was doing because I really like these genres.

Saw The Book of Eli tonight and it wasn't too bad. I was never bored, which is good! Also, I rented Friday the 13th Part VII from the PSN today and I'm just waiting for the rest of it to download. This is the only Paramount Friday I don't own on DVD and never seen before. Watched Part VI yesterday and it was fun.
Re: Movies you've just watched
I saw Expendables in cinema last night. 1/5 from me. What a waste of my time and money. All possible awesomeness (Dolph Lundgren Vs. Jet Li fight anyone) was totally blurry and closeup so you couldn't see shit. All of the "one-liners" sounded:
a) like they were "written" by a 5-year old
b) like the actor delivering them had to go #2 really bad
Also, the "target" for these "awesome" mercenaries was a general who liked to paint, but was corrupted by drug money.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I've been thinking about seeing The Expendables for quite some time, but I just can't motivate paying almost 11 euros for it. Downloaded Red Scorpion last night. Genuine old-school action with evil russians who get killed and a nice russiand (Dolph lundgren) who become american by the end of the movie. Oh, and I saw Happiness with girl a few nights ago, awesome dark humour.
Re: Movies you've just watched
I saw Ghost Writer last night and was disappointed. The first hour was revealed on the back cover for christs sake. It got pretty intense for 10 minutes or so, not worthy of over 7.0 of iMDB..
Re: Movies you've just watched
I watched the Jet LI film The Warlords. Pretty good but drawn out like every Chinese drama I have ever seen. Too much damn crying too.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I've been watching 2-3 movies a night thanks to Netflix Instant Stream for the past month. If there was an option to order food on Netflix there would be no reason to leave my house. About 160 movies still on my instant queue. Does anyone know how often films get added to Instant Stream?
To start off I have a shameful admission. Until a week ago I had never seen Die Hard. I don't know how this happened, I suppose I was just more of an Arnold fan growing up. Anyhow it deserves all the praise it gets as a classic of the action genre. This started me on a Bruce Willis kick, as I'd not seen a majority of films starting him, either.
It kind of saddened me to watch all the Die Hards back-to-back, the decline in quality from the original is staggering. I do think 4 kind of got things back on track and is a worthy entry to the series (note I saw the unrated cut of it, dunno how much it differs from the original/theatrical cut). I found it amusing that the T-1000 aka Robert Patrick was onscreen as a unnamed henchmen for 5 minutes or so in Die Hard 2.
Tears of the Sun is near-unwatchable. Were Bruce not in it, it would just be another generic straight-to-dvd action film. Only worth watching for the opening scene where Bruce's face is completely covered in black paint/mud that makes him look similar to Arnold in the final confrontation of Predator.
I think I enjoyed the concept and commentary in Surrogates more than the execution or the film itself, but don't understand why it got shit on so badly upon release. Sparse on action and there are a few REALLY bad actors in it, but somehow I still felt like I had a good time by the time it was done. I heard it was based on a comic or something and if thats the case I would love to see this premise done again or a remake down the line.
Rewatched The Fifth Element and 12 Monkeys, hadn't seen either since they were initially released on VHS a decade or more ago. Hardly remembered The Fifth Element at all. Really fantastic all around, but Chris Tucker is grating in it. Gary Oldman should be in every movie. Has aged really well, the effects still look sharp. 12 Monkeys is a classic, but Brad Pitt completely puts everyone else in the film to shame.
Non-Bruce Willis stuff:
Pandorum - I remembered this showing in theaters for like 2 days before leaving and now I really regret missing it on the bigscreen. While there is a really dumb moment or two toward the end and theres one character too many, it is still a very well put together and entertaining horror film. The sets of the film are fantastic, even moreso when I learned how small the budget for the film was. I won't spoil it, but the conclusion/revelation at the very end is clever and something I never saw coming. Hadn't seen him in any films before (tho after an IMDB it appears he was in 3:10 To Yuma, however I was intoxicated while watching that and don't remember much about it at all), but I believe I am gay for Ben Foster. Not since seeing 1986-era Val Kilmer in Top Gun has a man stirred my loins in such a fashion.
The Messenger - I needed me some more Ben Foster ASAP. One of the most bitter films I've seen. Similar to Requiem For A Dream....I love the film, but have doubts I'll ever watch it again simply because it is so depressing. Further cements in my mind that Woody Harrelson is one of the best actors working today.
Dram Stoker's Dracula - Good lord this is a strange fucking movie. I really don't even know If I enjoyed it or not, I was kind of left scratching my head at the end of it. I was kind of let down that the really vivid and arty color scheme of the flashback/historical scenes at the start of the film (the dusk-colored battle scene was awesome!) didn't carry on for the rest of the film, but the entire thing is beautifully shot and it in no way, shape or form looks like a movie pushing 20 years. Besides the always-wonderful Gary Oldman, I can't say I really liked any of the performances in the film. Anthony Hopkins in particular was kind of off. Neo as an English gentlemen may be the most hilarious miscasting ever.
Dark City - Criminally overlooked. Starts off slow as molasses, to the point I was about to stop watching it, but once it starts going it is incredibly distinct and fascinating.
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, Thirst - I saw Oldboy years ago and absolutely loved it and have rewatched it many times, but for whatever reason I had never checked out Park Chan-wook's other feature films (Did enjoy his segment in Three Extremes, even if I can't remember which one it was, I liked them all). Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance was fan-fucking-tastic, I would even put it above Oldboy. Lady Vengeance suffered from going on too long after finishing. Theres a certain scene in the film that in my mind seemed like the climax of the film or a great place to stop, but it kept going for another 20 minutes. Still enjoyed it, but the end kind of irked me. For all of you bitching about Twilight or how lame vampires have become lately watch Thirst (or Let The Right One In, which I believe someone already mentioned). Very offbeat for a vampire movie and a refreshing change of pace. I have JSA in my queue now, can't wait to see it. I hope the next film from Wook isn't far off.

Gozu (I believe the western DVD release is titled "Yakuza Horror Theater: Gozu) is probably my favorite Miike film. Full Metal Yakuza, Fudoh: The New Generation and The City of Lost Souls are all must-sees if you dug Dead or Alive. Avoid DOA2 and 3, though. Both are a giant waste of time (3 moreso than 2).Warp_Rattler wrote:So, back to movies: Can anyone recommend any really must-see Takashi Miike films? I know he's done an enormous amount of work, and I'm wondering what real standouts there might be in his repertoire. Not too keen on "Visitor Q", though.

Yep, The Keep was an interesting film with it's usage of special effects to help move the story along. I gotta admit that the music that Tangerine Dream used does work well with this type of hybrid sci-fi/horror film indeed -- definitely sets the pacing and overall mood/tone for the film.CMoon wrote:Holy Crap! Most folks will dismiss it but I personally like it with the way how Michael Mann has a unique spin on things with this "The Keep" film. It's even better to watch in it's original 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio presentation for the full cinematic effect compared to watching it in pan and scan 4:3 presentation. I've recorded The Keep to DVD-R for posterity.

Watched "Threads" this morning. It's a 1984 British docu-drama on global nuclear war and societal collapse, centered on Sheffield, England. Brutal and sad - hasn't aged a bit. Made me appreciate the view out of my window when it was over.
