Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
Captain Marvel - I enjoyed it quite a bit. Nice seeing Fury again. I also enjoyed Goose the cat, the Fonz lunchbox, and seeing a Kree that looked like Papa Smurf.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Memento.
I watched the movie believing that it was the first time (you know, better late than never...).
And then I realized that I watched it 18 years ago, when I was beginning to learn about memory, amnesia, and related matters. I then had a clear flash-bulb memory of what felt like another life: watching it with friends and (then) girlfriend, in summer, in a different country, etc. etc. Yet the memories felt distant, as if they were possibly fictional. I was tempted to call people and ask them if I was fabricating a memory of me watching the bloody movie with them, on that day (July 21, 2001), also because I could not recall watching it dubbed.
The problem, I guess, is that the memory of me watching itself was quite literally buried within a Cosmo of other memories that I had to form from my early '20s onwards, and that have nothing to do with...say, daily life (the technical term is: episodic memory). I felt like I had an epiphany: most I what I currently remember is work-related. I am in Academia, so I read a lot for a living. It thus seems that work-related memories (semantic and procedural memories, if you wish) are just taking over episodic memory, in a sense making me progressively and inexorably amnesiac about other matters of life.
I thought that fiction could not emotionally unsettle me any more. Instead...
I blame each and everyone of you because you did not prevent me from watching the movie, and that's it for tonight

Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

The again, maybe one of the Randoramas, primed your implicit memory upon first viewing.
You better ask him what he wants.
Nope.Randorama wrote: I blame each and everyone of you because you did not prevent me from watching the movie,
You already broached the topic of this film with myself and Bill, a little over a year ago, in this thread.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I am wondering if the first Randorama is not really another complex memory implanted to make me doubt of my current choices. By this point, I can safely conclude that [/i]Inception[/i] or Total Recall are off-limits, for the peace of my (current) mind.
I was about to check our previous conversion, Zen, but I opted against it. I am not sure that I can gaze at the abyss of forgetfulness with ease.
Now, where was I?

Bumblebee (2018)
It's definitely much better than the previous movies, but I guess it's a low bar, LOL. That being said, the 80's setting and the better looking (and more recognizable) CG models were a plus to me. Decent enough movie.

Cutthroat Island... I've never seen it before, but have read many times, over the years, the bombast of it's reputation.
I actually quite liked it, thought it was pretty entertaining overall. Better than some of the later Pirates of the Caribbean movies which just served to feed Johnny Depp's ego...

Re: Movies you've just watched
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Cheese and crackers, most of this movie kinda sucked. A lot of it felt less like a Harry Potter movie and more like a teen soap opera. So many subplots that went absolutely nowhere and often ended as soon as they started. What was the point of that whole ballroom dance subplot, and what the hell does Hermione see in Ron? Ron was kind of an asshole throughout most of this. Surprisingly, this movie became really good roughly 80% of the way through and kept its momentum going through to the very end. Less kooky characters, meandering subplots, and forced romance and more blood sacrifices, killer mermaids, dragons, black magic, and apocalyptic wizard battles to the death, please.
Spoiler
I'm guessing Harry is going to continue to not tell anyone that Lucius Malfoy is a servant of "you know who" and doing so will inevitably bite him really hard in the ass.

Under The Skin (2014)
Scarlett Johansson drives around Glasgow picking up non-actors. It was great. Cross 2001 and The Man Who Fell To Earth with Kids and you get this. The sound design really makes it, Johansson is amazing and it has just the right amount of ambiguity - not trying to be clever, just happy in its strangeness if that makes sense.
The first half was better than the second, and I was wondering where the "story" could go and wasn't thrilled with it, but it's all in the telling and it worked for me. Slightly disappointed to find out the guy who made it directed those dreadful Radiohead videos in the 90's, blurrrgggghhhh.

Top Knot Detective (2017) - Aaron McCann, Dominic Pearce
A fake Docu-Comedy on "the greatest television show ever made"
"Deductive Reasoning!"
Big Bad Wolves (2013) - Aharon Keshales, Navot Papushado
Watched based on the praise it has received here.
Top notch. Story, acting, everything (the acting, in particular, was very good)
It slowed a little, here and there but this was perhaps because it was such an engrossing film, that the viewer becomes spoiled with constant stimulation.
Recommended.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018) - Terry Gilliam
Well!
It's Don Quixote but not as we know it!
First things first; Adam Driver did not do it for me. At all.
Jonathan Pryce, who I can sometimes find trying, is, well . . . is Don Quixote here.
As a Gilliam fan and of course, a great admirer of Cervantes in my youth, did I like The Man Who Killed Don Quixote?
Dunno!
All I wanted to do after watching it, was listen to Richard Kiley
What does that mean? Dunno.
This is a very "Meta" film and I have been advised to watch Lost in La Mancha (2002) - Keith Fulton, Louis Pepe, so I'm off to do that now.

Captain Marvel: **1/2
Man, did they manage to make a total Mary Sue out of Carol Danvers. I get that they are trying to establish her as being one of the strongest heroines in the MCU and someone who can be a credible threat to Thanos, but if they really wanted to do that they should have put her up against someone stronger than the C-list flunkies of a B-list villain we've already seen get wiped out in particularly humiliating fashion in an earlier / chronologically later film. There's basically no point in the film where she is in any real danger, and they don't really even bother trying to make it look like she is. I guess they figure that basically everyone who watched Infinity War is going to watch this (see also: sunk cost fallacy) so they just kind of mailed it in.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I remember watching the credits feeling like the end of Infinity War was a message from the studio to the audience that the bad guys had won not only in the fiction, but also in reality. The message was clear - we are in control & making half of you disappear with the snap of our fingers. Just like that, Captain Marvel was born. She will "make history" (i.e. rewrite it) & usher in a new era for the MCU. An era of decline, the beginning of the end. It's pretty fitting that the next two entries are subtitled 'Endgame' & 'Far From Home'. Stan Lee's heartbreaking but appropriately timed death only validated the notion.
Many folks saw it coming. It was inevitable that SJW Marvel comics would eventually bleed over into the cinematic universe. SJW Marvel doesn't sell and neither will SJW MCU once the SJW fans start eating each other like they always do. This is when the casual audience will just be too bummed out to go. This is happening right as people are warming up to the DC movies.
I finally watched Aquaman today. It was the silliest movie I've ever seen but it was also kinda fun. Gonna go give Shazam a chance next week.

I liked the movie, but it seems there was some interference. It was originally speculated that Jude Law would play Mar-Vell, but he ended up playing a different character instead.

Us
I enjoyed it. I think Jordan Peele adds just enough comedy/cheese to satisfy the status quo without going too overboard, all the while bringing some new stuff to the table. I would have a hard time classifying this or Get Out, which is probably why they do so well. Horror? Dunno, I didn't find either particularly scary, although the underlying themes of both are pretty fucked up. I don't think his film making should be regarded as the second coming or anything, but the underlying ideas are, thus far, at the very least something different. Of all the trailers, there were about 3 horror films and I rolled my eyes at all of them... especially the over-promoted Pet Semetary which basically shows you the whole movie in the fucking trailer! So yeah, back to my basic sum up -- I enjoyed it.
Having said that, I'm reserving judgement for The Twilight Zone which I doubt I'll watch for a while.

Leaving Neverland
Watched this a couple weeks ago. I went in to it willing to believe Michael diddled these kids, assuming that they just wanted to tell their story and be done with it. Even though they present *zero* incriminating evidence, I was still thinking it could be true. But I changed my mind pretty fast after a quick google showed Robson tried to sue MJ's estate for 1.5 billion dollars in 2013 (which was thrown out). Then I watched this rebuttal the other day that points out all of the inconsistencies and inaccuracies in their stories. Honestly, this documentary had the opposite intended effect on me. I'm more on MJ's side than ever. Even in death he has to deal with vultures who just want his money and to profit off his name.

I don't want to write them off completely just yet because I was really enjoying everything they released before CM but I do feel like this is the beginning of the end. I'm one of the few Master of Kung-Fu fans out there & I'd love to see that movie pull a Guardians & surprise everyone.BrianC wrote:I liked the movie, but it seems there was some interference. I couldn't believe Black Panther wasn't a spiteful, cringy train wreck of disingenuous social engineering and actually turned out a decent flick so maybe CM is just a slight misstep. When she blew the head off True Lies Arnie the joke was, "Hate is here".

Re: Movies you've just watched
I hope Master of Kung Fu turns out better than Marvel TV's Iron Fist Netflix series. It lacked second person narration and didn't do the comic justice at all. If Marvel ever decides to do a movie with a different Iron Fist, it should make us feel like we are the Iron Fist.

Under the Silver Lake (2018) - David Robert Mitchell
Mitchell's It Follows (2014), was quite well done, I thought. It certainly gained him a following. In fact, I think it may even be a little underrated.
So I was looking forward to his latest.
First off, just to get this out of the way; I didn't care for any of the actors in Under the Silver Lake.
Some of them I am familiar with, some not but they all have that hipster indie vibe going on and they all have that forever a teenager look.
Andrew Garfield, who plays the lead, is much lauded, apparently.
I don't see it. He is a passable actor with fuck all charisma. Maybe I'm too old.
Onto the film which, I believe, is being described as Neo- Noir, comedy-drama ?
Basically a pop version of a composite of, Barton Fink (1991) - Coen bros/Mulholland Drive (2001) - David Lynch/Inherent Vice (2014) - Paul Thomas Anderson.
Though nowhere near the standard of the above three, Under the Silver Lake (2018), does have it's moments and if you are a fan of the film's obvious influences,
you may be at the very least, entertained.
Visually, this is a completely different animal to Mitchell's It Follows,
Very, very nice;
Although this could be said of all films, depending on how much you read into the story, this film could be quite a trip.
Once you step back from the WTF-ness of the whole thing and depending on the perspective you view it from, you might see it as something quirky, or something more "Cosmic".
It's got that post Hollywood-dream, post urban-myth, post "modern culture", thing going on.
We, as Andrew Garfield's "Sam", get to chase down all this crazy. I think one of David Robert Mitchell main themes here is;
Under the Silver Lake, has reviews that are diametrically opposed at the moment, which is pretty understandable.
In aggregate, I would think that the film is going to lose David Robert Mitchell more old fans than new ones gained.
Overall, I was entertained for the 2hrs and 19mins.
Oh and really I liked the name.

Utterly bizarre film about Charles Bronson ( not the actor) but Britain's most dangerous prisoner. Played by Tom Hardy who does a great job by the way. Worth the watch if you get the chance.

Ghost Stories (2018)
Apparently the stage show was excellent, but this was shit. Good God it was the worst king of "British" film there is. I'd have thought with one of the guys from The League of Gentlemen directing it would have something. But no. It's like those old Hammer and Amicus short horror story collections, but stripped of the charm of the 60's and 70's, stripped of interesting performances and gore. Very predictable, badly acted and filmed. Plus, the twist is such an old trope you can see it a mile off.
Unreleasable! Give me back my 90 minutes.
