Don't forget Turbo Kid!

(The nephew enjoyed it for the face value, but I fear the warm nostalgia glow suffusing the whole thing for me was lost on him.)
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Oh yeah, Turbo Kid was a good one also. How about the Has Fallen trilogy and the Daniel Craig James Bond ones? Or The Equalizer 1 and 2?

Of course we have. It's the ratio of passable to utter garbage that makes me realize we are doomed as a species.

There's already an asshole critic on YouTube who goes by the name "The Critical Drinker", and he has an ongoing series of videos called "Why Modern Movies Suck" which I call bullshit on.

His heart is in the right place, imo. I thought The Last Of Us 2's story was masturbatory garbage from start to finish, but I get why he was taken with the world design, which I wish the director had handed to a less hamfisted writer before promptly lying down in front of an IDF bulldozer.

Some good out-of-character insights on why modern sequels and prequels tend to suck dick, and by extension, why some don't.

For whatever it's worth, he loved the new Top Gun (I've not seen it, or the original even, preferring it remain an OG Konami series in my mind  Danger Zone more like FUKKIN RAWWWK).

lmfao
or the original even
the first top gun is pretty great, actually. i don't think i've watched a tony scott movie i haven't liked. he's kind of like if you took all of vorhoeven's interests and instead of having him make satire, had him make propaganda. or if frank miller tried harder to be patriotic and it broke his mind even more. or something. his movies all have this totally demented nature to them of how you be an ethical and upstanding man in a world that is tirelessly hypocritical, and the answer is always killing people. the movie ends on what seems to be WW3 starting and it's treated like a heroic victory. dude's brain is fucking busted but every single movie he makes is a more or less superb look at the process of that happening to a guy. way smarter than his brother even if "more wrong," "i guess." he's great.

top gun is fairly early in his career and it's fun to watch him descend into like, man on fire and unstoppable.

Ohshi, Man On Fire was his? (I typo'd "Man Of Fire," which is pretty apropos tbh) I thought it was a decent UBERDEATH feat DEATHMAN THA KILLAH outing. Liked the bit where Denzel advises poor pencil-necked Marc Anthony that he'll steal his soul, like some ex-SEAL gone Lich King, if he try givin' him any mo jive MOTHA FUCKA! Wouldn't have guess it was by the Top Gun dude at the time, but in hindsight, the prominent use of sugary pop music makes sense!

yeah, that man loved denzel and denzel loved him. if you haven't seen unstoppable, i highly recommend it, too. that movie is completely fucking bananas. i have a hard time processing why he's not a more talked about director, i guess because of his politics and his suicide? you watch his films and you definitely get the idea this is the progression of a man's mental state deteriorating in a deeply visceral way. he was someone who seriously never stopped giving a fuck and obviously traveled to some extremes in doing so.

given you're an avid consumer of old games and at least some old anime and ova's, you'll probably be surprised how much influence top gun wound up having on creatives in japan. its DNA is in a really weirdly large amount of things, maybe nothing more prominently than gundam 0083 stardust memory, which is incredibly top gun obsessed.

edit:

lol, thinking about how the "pilot giving the thumbs up" imagery might be (most popularly, maybe not originally) his. saw my signature after posting and i was like "hold up a second"

Oh yeah, no doubt on the JP pop culture thing! I only saw Blade Runner relatively recently (circa 2010), but I always knew it was a pillar of that peculiar Western cinema influence on postwar Japanese artists, same as Aliens and The Road Warrior (those I grew up with). Much the same with Top Gun (including actual JP-made game content for the license... that bangin' arrangement from the second NES game, and all the rad boxarts for same). Even having not seen it (or Blade Runner, at the time), I instanly clocked the TG references in Bubblegum Crisis

I still thought he crossed the line when he shit on Rambo: Last Blood and hated on autistic people. I’ll never forgive him for that. I won’t be any surprised if he shits on The Expendables 4 next once that one is out. He’s mean spirited, bigoted, and condescending. Don’t let the fact that he praises characters like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor or the fact that he liked Arcane fool you, it doesn’t change what he is. Plus, I hate his voice.

You should definitely check out the Top Guns. I can't imagine what you're gonna think of the original watching it for the first time now. It is over the top 80's. I saw it first run, as did every single person in America. While Top Gun: Maverick, which is not some amazing piece of art, is still quite amazing.

I love the critical drinker on youtube. He makes good points and he is not alone and carries a lukewarm sense of humour as well. Thats Scottish people for ya.

Top Gun Maverick, already said its ok. The Theme of the movie is that the side characters say 10 is the maximum, Tom Cruise says 11 or 12 is the maximum. Thats it really. I predicted the end about 3 minutes before it actually happened and I think if a sequel to Maverick is in the works it would have worked better without the the Disney ending.

So up to date -

Thor Thunder and Love -

To me they took Flash Gordon fashion, added a lot of comedy sketches, threw in a few jokes and ramped the music up to 11.

Surprisingly its quite entertaining in places, when you laugh because you can't hold it back but not always because of the right reasons. I think thats what they were going for and I enjoyed it. You'll be disappoined if you want some kind of serious Marvel presentation. Its like Deadpool without the extreme blood and violence with a bit of cringe and slapstick thrown in. Some of the dialogue is overdone in places. The cast surprised me, I went in blind and was like "OMG thats .......".

7.5/10.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Laser Mission - 6.5/10, could go up to 8 or 9 with the right crowd/ mood
Brandon Lee stars in this dumb as shit 80s low budget action movie. It has black people, Spanish people, AND the KGB for some reason in the same place? And Werner Pochath is playing one of the baddies (in hilarous fashion, as usual)?! The cuts are totally random at times and every single one of the oneliners is cringy as hell. Maybe not as goofy as Samurai Cop, but it's not that far off.

He was in a bad way during the filming of that movie and died of AIDS related complications shortly thereafter.

Last week there was a John Waters retrospective at my local theater and I went to see Polyester in true Odorama!

Image

They even gave us the scratch n sniff cards and everything. This was my first time seeing it, and I can't even imagine it without the Odorama gimmick, though I will admit that most of them smelled kind of the same; it was mostly about the audience participation element of the whole thing. IAC, Waters is a local figure here in Baltimore, so this was his home turf and he did a special introduction to the film festival thanking all of us weirdos for supporting his films over the years. It was a lot of fun.

Polyester is hilarious. It's a lot more tongue and cheek than earlier Waters flicks and while it still features gratuitous comic violence, it lacks the obscenity and shock of films like Desperate Living. My favorite character was the son, Dexter, who plays a delinquent with a foot fetish, but the daughter's love interest, Bobo, is also amazing and I might cop his mummy outfit this Halloween. He was played by Stiv Bators, who was the frontman of classic CBGBs punk staple The Dead Boys.

x93 don't you think he had a point though about Thor getting stripped BUTT-NAKED in the new movie and it being played for MAXIMUM LOLZ when if it'd been one of his ladyfriends it'd be OMFG ME TOO :o Thor is kind of the Terry Crews if you get my meaning, a big buff dude preyed on by a fat old queer!

(I think it's worth thinking on but really IDGAF, because I subscribe to patriarchal customs where a man's spread ass cheeks and big flapping nutsack mean fuck-all but women are to be afforded more dignity  some call it MISOGYNY but to me it is just being gentlemanly! :o)

So one side wants greater representation in media, the other side wants to take away the rights of adults to get life-saving medical procedures because they must suffer "consequences" for having sex, even if they've been raped.

Clearly the former is the authoritaritan types!

Forcing an ideology into everything is violence. Sleeping with everything that moves without regard for any consequences is a choice. You're pro-choice, aren't you?

Last Night in Soho 4/10

What starts off as a fascinating psychological thriller devolves into an homage to bad clichés. Edgar Wright misjudges his own ability to bring his success in satire to a serious film and it just falls flat on it's face.

Not sure what else I can say about this one it really sucked.

Sorry, sarcasm can be hard in written form. I meant to use it like it's an established fact, just like those individuals, clearly removed from reality. I don't think words define reality, I think reality does.
