Perfect days (2023)

Image

It was fun to see Koji Yakusho again. He's a favourite ever since Cure (Kyua, 1997).
I enjoyed following the protagonist's (a hard working Toilet cleaner) everyday routines and subtle interactions with others.
His life's as monotonous as a gamer's life really, but cleaner. I envy his bubble bath routine!
It was quite relatable, recommended.

Wim Wenders: This was clearly created by a non-Japanese. Men don't clean toilets in Japan... not even mens toilets. My friend recently put an FB rant up and it's fucking hysterical (and accurate).

Possible to share that rant (or parts of it)? :D Otherwise I'm sure some reviewer has picked it up as well.
So why aren't men cleaning the toilets? In Sweden it's about 75% females, 25% males I've read.
Are those semi-transparent toilet walls real though?

Since I screenshotted it to pass it around, yes you can! Not sure how that fucking screenshot got so big, but here you go. Yes I made the comment.

I assume they're in the movie? Closest thing I've seen is some outdoor toilets that are glass, but once you lock the door they become opaque. Maybe the most useless feature of anything, but #japan. I have some video of somewhere.

Yes, exactly like that.

So it's a thing, huh. What a cool waste of money!

The film was good anyway. Typical academy award film, but the actor sold it well. It reminded me of Nomadland in many ways.

Near Dark - 1987 - Kathryn Bigelow

Image

Never saw this until now. I never heard of it back in my 80's cable days, but it's been on my radar for the last 10 years I guess since it's been frequently referenced as a lost vampire classic. Now, it IS that, but let's be honest, it doesn't take much to qualify as a "lost vampire classic". But on paper, it was a must-see for me:

- Tangerine Dream soundtrack (always a big deal to me)
- Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (not that I'm a fan, but still interesting)
- Stars Bill Paxton
- Stars Joshua John Miller (of River's Edge fame)
- Stars Lance Henriksen (A natural vampire)
- Stars Jenny Wright (who made me :o in The World According To Garp)
- Stars Jenette Goldstein (most famous for the gif below)
Image

It also had the cowboy/vampire aesthetic before it was cool.

All in all though, it's just a decent 80's cable movie. Being a fan of merely decent 80's movies, that's fine with me, but it doesn't exactly deserve its post-Hurtlocker reputation. The himbo lead is just fine; but you could switch him with Jason Patric and no one would notice. Unfortunately Bill Paxton as the young alpha vampire has no more depth than his "Chet" character in Weird Science; he's just annoying and one-note. Joshua John Miller though is by far the standout; he's just as creepy here as he was in River's Edge, he's the GOAT in the line of creepy young actors. But overall, meh, it's an ok movie.

This movie is included on my otherwise very-dependable They Shoot Films, Don't They? list, and it's only on there IMO because Bigelow directed it. I still recommend it though if you like mid/late 80's movies, or vampire movies. I mean why not? It's better than The Lost Boys at least (uggh).

Pretty much agree with your summary. The film had a coolness back in the day that has now kinda worn a bit thin (I watched it again recently and was fairly bored, although did still find it reasonably stylish -- probably down to the usual atmospheric boost from our synth loving friends, TD). The scenes that were intended as shocking don't deliver quite the punch they used to. Also, I don't think Cameron and Bigelow were yet official in '87 when this came out (I haven't researched their "ins and outs"), but the Aliens cast spill over must be more than mere coincidence.

I'm clinging onto the idea that Lost Boys is and will always be AMAZING, which of course explains why I haven't watched it in the last two decades. Sometimes you just have to embrace the denial!

Great resource, btw, thanks! Temptation got the better of me and I had to look at their master list to see what was at the lower end (prepare for browser hang). I've probably seen some way worse flicks than their bottom 10, is my conclusion

It is! I've got a video of my son using them. It's pretty cool but yes, useless. They've got some in the small athletics field right next to Yoyogi Park that I've walked by about 2 million times. What was there before was definitely some post war shit that had to go.

Flirt - 1995 - Hal Hartley

Image

My ninth Hal Hartley film, and this one is in the top half of them. It's an 80min movie broken into the 3rds with each third repeating the nearly the same story and script with different characters and settings. The first takes place in NYC, the second in Berlin, the third in Tokyo. I found it to be a lot of fun, had some good laughs.

Has a good cast: You'll see Parker Posey, Michael Imperioli, and Hal Hartley mainstay Martin Donovan in the first (NYC) third, and you'll see the gay/black panther comic book guy from Chasing Amy in the Berlin segment, and the Tokyo segment stars Hartley himself.

Not the first Hartley I'd recommend but one of the better ones. I got one last one of his I need to watch.

Watched on Criterion

Killers of the Flower Moon

Was excited to see this on the big screen and got to catch it last week at a campus theater.
What a waste of time. The little I've thought about it afterward, I'll have to say it was generally terrible.
This was almost the forth movie I walked out on. Multiple times I was ready to leave, but figured I made it this far I might as well finish it. ...then a half hour later sitting there wondering why am I watching this?
One specific gripe is that the chemistry between the two main characters just didn't fly. There was nothing convincing about their relationship. There were a few scenes with DiCaprio where he seemed to be channeling George W Bush.
Truly tiresome.

The Book of Life - 1998 - Hal Hartley

Image

I wound up liking it by the end, but I'd put it at the bottom of the Hal Hartley collection. It stars Martin Donovan as Jesus, Thomas Jay Ryan (star of Henry Fool) as The Devil, and PJ Harvey as Magdalena. Jesus has opened the 5th seal with two more to go prior to the prophesized apocalypse set for 12/31/1999. Sounds great on paper, but this is a low-budget movie with an almost constant slow-shutter camera. Not bad, but not up to the quality of his other films. Thomas Jay Ryan made me lol though. PJ is just there to be there unfortunately, so don't get your hopes up. Watched on Criterion.

Far from a masterpiece and probably Christopher Nolan's worst film.
It doesn't deserve 13 nominations.

Also Napoleon is a disappointment , the battle are cool and scenographic, epic, but as a whole...the movie ...well, It's difficult to fully empathize with a character like that...Ridley what did you do?

I can confidently say Skip it!
It may be an "important" movie, but it ain't a good movie.
Scorsese appears at the final scene to read out the conclusion, the emotional weight didn't carry for me and it felt contrived, if not ego indulgent.
This important story of the Osage Native Americans was summarized in an NPR report back when the movie was released. That radio reporting did in 10 minutes or less what the movie took over 3 hours to do. It may have been worth it if the character development was successful or if the story wasn't presented in such a disjointed manner.

Lord British and everyone else, thank you for the recent write ups you've posted here, quite a few Ive never heard of. Gives me plenty to track down this year!

Id been on the fence regarding Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan films have never much appealed to me. It is still playing on 70mm IMAX in Philadelphia, which is tempting for the experience, but Flower Moon ate up my tolerance for wasting time on a movie.

Sentimental sci-fi fest The Creator is a visual feast. I loved everything about it aside from the script, the story and the characters. It's like a very polished videogame.
I've played better.
Oppenheimer was entirely unworthy of the hype it received. It is a modern Sunday afternoon TV movie from the late 60's that would have been repeated in the 80's. The sort of thing my mother would have watched when we only had one decent TV and we'd all sit around bored to absolute fuck hating her for making us suffer it. And then Poirot would come on and we'd all die inside.

The Last Detail (1973)
Dir. Hal Ashby

Bored and frustrated from awaiting their long-delayed orders, US Navy men Buddusky and Mulhall (“Mule”), are tasked with escorting a young seaman (Meadows) to Portsmouth military prison where he’ll serve eight years for petty theft. It was a lousy forty bucks he swiped and the worst thing is he never even got to keep it. Eight years. Boy, they really stuck it to him.

Buddusky (Jack Nicholson) tries to ameliorate the boy’s misery as they embark on their journey, telling him they’ll knock two years off his sentence right away for good behaviour. But later he confides in Mulhall (Otis Young) his true assessment of Meadows’ (Randy Quaid) fate. It’ll kill him — those god damn grunts beating on him day and night. “It takes a certain kind of sadist to become a marine,” he declares bitterly. Mulhall doesn’t disagree. He too really hates this kind of “chicken shit detail”.

Buddusky is determined to show the boy a slice of the good life before they hand him over to his brutal new custodians. And it’s these events the film focuses on. Mulhall thinks Buddusky goes too far, puts too much at risk. They’re not even supposed to uncuff the lad, let alone get him drunk, take him to visit his (alcoholic) Ma, and later a brothel.

(Wandering the frozen streets:)
Meadows: I’m not old enough for a beer.
Buddusky: Everyone is old enough for a beer, am I right? (looks to Mulhall for assent, who says nothing).

They nearly lose their charge more than once as he, quite understandably, tries to escape. Later, Mulhall explodes calling Buddusky a menace. “The navy was the best thing that ever happened to me, and I’m not gonna let you fuck things up!”. Treating the kid like it’s his birthday will only make life inside for him worse, not better. They won’t melt the cheese on his burger while he’s doing time — they’ll more likely spit on it, or worse.

This is golden era Jack, and he slides effortlessly into the role of the drunken sailor; a man for whom Navy life is all he knows, even if outwardly he treats it with disdain. Through all his bravado he’s truly a fish out of water around civilians, women especially, with whom he has little to discuss but life on the vast expanse of ocean, or how his uniform makes his dick look. But one thing Buddusky does have is a sense of justice we can relate to and admire, and this is the redeeming crux of his character; maybe the only likeable thing about him (this and his willingness to play big brother to Meadows and teach him a thing or two about life). It's touching even if Buddhusky himself doesn't know what his efforts will achieve.

All three of the main cast put in great performances. I didn’t recognise Otis Young from anything else, but he plays the angry voice of reason here very well, when his character isn’t falling victim to his comrade’s rebellious charms. Likewise, Randy Quaid is convincing as the doomed impressionable youth, who naively latches on to anything that might give him hope, including Buddhist chanting.

The Blu-ray contained a short interview with, among others, director and producer Alexander Payne. I have to agree with his mild criticism that the choice of light-hearted militaristic music (e.g. Anchors Aweigh), does pull you out of the film at times, which is a shame. Maybe Ashby thought it would be too downbeat otherwise, although I suspect he was making a subtle statement about how ridiculous the whole situation truly was. Amid the film’s generally bleak happenings, a few comical moments really stand out, but I won't spoil those here.

A Touch Of Zen - 1971 - King Hu (Taiwan)

Image

This was pretty awesome. It's a 3-hour wuxia film that is pretty well-paced, not a boring moment. I hated Crouching Tiger but there might be some similarities in a good way. The female character is one of my favorite girl badasses, and she's beautiful too. The movie is gorgeous to look at and the directing is really awesome, especially how a lot of the actors are all kind of choreographed together with their movements. King Hu came out of Shaw Bros Studio in Hong Kong who were THE name in martial arts movies, and after he left it was Chang Cheh who really took over SB and gave us the late-70's and 80's wuxia classics. But King Hu has brought a more artistic vision with this one, and he probably has several more that are on the same level. I might check those out. When I see this stuff I'm like "This is where my videogames come from". Watched on Criterion

There was a bar/restaurant in SOHO in NYC in the early 2000s that had bathroom stalls like that; was part of it's y2k-ish theme. Idk if it's still there or not, but I doubt it based on how quick things turn over.

Miller's Crossing - 1990 - Cohen Bros

Image

I think of all the times in the 90's or the 00's having trouble finding something to rent at a video store and yet I've never seen this. WTF? It just never happened; it was never on cable, no one really talked about it, etc. For some reason I figured that the Cohen Bros dialed it down a notch on the humor and that's why it was a box office bomb. Nope. This is top tier Cohen Bros and wacky as hell. It's an acid prohibition gangster flick. It's got Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, John Turturro, and Steve Buscemi, but Marcia Gay Harden and especially Jon Polito steal the show. Don't miss it like I did. Watch on Paramount +

We saw, er, Dune, uh, First Part, now. I knew I would wait to watch it, so I wouldn't have to refresh years later for the incoming Part 2. Naturally, I enjoyed it, which is not a given with run-time epics nowadays that often are asinine, and shun by me. Fine pacing. Very well cast, too. Knowning the stuff through books, games, and the Lynch-pin one, it was interesting to estimate where this would find its own end, to be later continued. It's all right, though in my imagination it would be with the dream-vision or nightmare of the new tyrant. Fun to see how the lovers meet: Young Duke: Gulp! The girl of my dreams! I don't know what to say... I just lean against this rock. Young Vision: Bah! You're soft. I pity you. Take my knife and die with your honour intact!

Next evening, we re-watched the Lynch epic. 2h and 11m! Nothing compares! Toto rocks!

Polito was in the 1986-1988 show Crime Story (created by Michael Mann) set in Chicago and later Las Vegas. My dad was contacted by Mann's people to use his car (1957 Chrysler 300c) in the show, and it wound up being Dennis Farina's personal car in the TV show. Like 15 years ago WTTW (PBS) did this special on historical Chicago, and they contacted my dad again to use his car because the guests were Anthony Dennison and Jon Polito. So in the special, Dennison and Polito are driving around Chicago with my dad in the back seat. It was cool but embarrassing at the same time. [/coolstorybro]
