Rank is a bit crazy in this game. It's very explicitly anchored to lives left and nothing else (none of that Garrega craziness) but I'm not sure it justifies suiciding.

One thing is that while loosing a life in any given level seems to instantly drop rank, loosing a life during a boss battle doesn't drop the rank. That means if you begin a boss section with the rank high, you're set-up for a Gradius style fall from grace if you loose just one life and the firepower that goes with it. Better to die just before the boss - so maybe there is a case for suiciding.

Your shot level has an effect. Some boss attacks will definitely slow down as your power level decreases.

Fun fact: This guy's swords are nigh undodgeable if you're fully powered.

I see - I hadn't thought of the system working like that. I'm only up to the end of Stage 4 on a credit, so basing my observations attacks on relative inexperience (wise move huh!?). I'm still certain the stage two boss doesn't level down, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the inputs saucykobold!

Spent tonight with Chi at Casino trying to work out any consistancy in the scoring and rank of this game and we both just got thoroughly confused, but I did get a new score!:

spadgy - 523,900 - LV5 - PCB

Finally got to level 5! Updating now...

Died at the fourth boss, next time I won't pick up that bomb item early. Boss 2 is also set for instant kill via bomb.

I'd never thought of that! I always use the last bomb on the second 'midboss' flying fortress thing. Stupid of me.

Anyway, great to see somebody else playing this game! Welcome to the flying car crew Imhotep!

Updating now...

EDIT: And done! This high score table is great in that the scores are all pretty close! Anything could change with a small increase in score. Get back to it all of you!

Can someone tell me what the "defaults" are for Mame, because on the PCB setting all the dipswitches to OFF is NOT default, but rather the Easiest setting! According to this factory settings for PCB dipswitch2 should be 2 and 3 as ON and the rest OFF. Is this what people are playing on?

Good point Dave. I'll have to check the details next time I go to the Arcade for CHI and my score, but it might not be thread-destroyingly bad news.

In the meantime I'll have to PM all those who submitted scores so far, but that will have to wait until I get home from work.

In the meantime I'll update CHI's score anyway, and we'll get this all sorted ASAP!

CHI - do you remember how we set the Dips? I had them on defaults before the board went into the arcade.

Oh - and well done on trashing my score!

was in Casino yesterday to check the dip switches... they were all on OFF...
but i got the engineer to switch the DS2 2and3 ON... so i believe it's on default now...

from testing on 2 credits: enemies bullets are slightly faster... enemies take longer to die... and it gets RANKED UP pretty quick too!

if this is true... here's my new score from today after work...

Finally, I've updated the thread - I've removed my 'forbidden' score, and updated CHI's, plus made a note in the first post. Sorry it took me so long - I moved house at the the weekend, so no internet, no time, and nothing but boxes and packing surrounding me!

Now - my knowledge of MAME is limited. Is it likely that all the MAME scores submitted before 'DIP Switch-Gate' will still be eligible for submission? Would the ROM downloaded come preset with DIPs on defaults? Perhaps I should PM all submitters to check...

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your score Dave K, and I hear Taylor might have one too. I'll be back at Casino just as soon as I'm sorted again, with a new score straight after that!

OT question for turbo force pcb owners, does your board have the two socketed roms on the top right corner (number 6 and 7)? I have two pcbs and one is missing those roms but seems to play perfectly...weird

I'll check next time I'm in the arcade if the engineer lets us open the cab to look at my board. Might even be tomorrow night!

So - can anybody help with my MAME default DIPs question?

Difficulty 4 is the default in MAME. You start with three lives (so your life counter will initially display "2") and get an extend at 200,000 points.

It appears that was a lie. Think I failed to check my update

Anyway - it is sorted. Now where's you score Dave?

Here's a new one from me (and yes - that is CHI's credit just 100 points above my new score! )

sorry for the bump, but apparently there are "old" and "new" boards of this game, like with a lot of namco games. only the old version is in mame though.

does anyone with boards happen to see any differences? i heard there are some unused enemies in the old version's code, maybe they were added or something. gamest/arcadia feels the need to treat them as separate, at least.

hi Gemant I have a question for you, MAME has only one version of this game or two? I only found one and it is the old version theoretically, but the rock stage 6 gave me 5.000 points.

Mame have only a old version (new versioni is missing). About the differences between these 2 versions, I read years ago details on Arcadia magazine.

The possible reasons are:

1) Informations from Arcadia magazine are wrong;
2) The actual old version in mame is the new version.

Nice. The WR seems quite low in this game, only barely 2,000,000, maybe you should go for it. But I haven't tried the second loop yet, perhaps it's insanely hard.

honestly I'm not yet ready to beat the WR, this game has a very complicated Rank, and still do not know how to decipher it, losing lives the rank decreases and I think the firepower also influences, but I'm not entirely sure. For now I'm content with the western record xD. You are a very skilled player in the games of video system I'm sure if you put your mind you can overcome easily.
