Can splitters be used for passive input?

Post by SGGG2 »

I need more inputs (HDMI, VGA, Component) at certain points in my set-up and really don't want another switch. The descriptions make it sound like it won't work;

"This is splitter cable. You can only connect one input device (i.e. DVD player,cable box or satellite receiver) to two output device(i.e. TV or projector).You can't connect two input device (i.e. PC,DVD player,cable box or satellite receiver) to one output device(i.e. Monitor, TV or projector)"

However, since I'll only have one signal active at any given time, I can see why it wouldn't work. Are these things one way only?

Splitter (Y-) cables are bad. They bring down the quality since they omit the 75ohm impedance of video cables. You also risk damage to your sources, since they are not on way. A source signal on one end will be carried to both the display (or processing device) and to the other source which might not be protected against other inputs. Bad idea overall.
