Shmup genre mascot

Post by EinhanderZwei »

Whenever we hear 'fighting game', we remember Ryu from Street Fighter. Whenever we hear 'platformer', we remember Mario and Sonic. Whenever we hear 'shmup', we remember... whom?

If all the genres have their own most-recognizable-characters, why can't shmups do? Here are my picks:

- Vic Viper
- R9 Arrowhead
- Koyori (?)
- Raiden
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

For me, what comes to mind is:
Vic Viper
the R-Type ship
the red DDP ship
maybe the Radiant Silvergun ship?

The first two that come to mind for me are, Twinbee and Kim De John. I do love me some Shikigami though.

I think of Vic Viper, and I've never even played Gradius. R-9 Arrowhead comes pretty close too.

As for overheads, though, I think of the Raiden Mk-II. P-38 is also mentionable because many unrelated shmups have used it in one way or another.

And then for Run-N-Gun, I think of Eri Kasamoto, simply because she's always on my mind. Marco fits better though.

Not bad. Silver would've been a cool choice too, at least his parrot anyway. Blazers (from SW3) are also cool.

Sounds strange, but I'll go with the Xenon 2 ship. Seriously, who hasn't played that game, back in the day, with its fiendish third stage?
Of course, after that comes Type A: I only got to see Hibachi during recent days.

And yes, DOOM kicks ass.

The happy smiling blue lander mascot character in Compile games. Complete with sound effect for picking one up.
