It's depressing out there. The golden age of 2D is gone, and we are reverting to NES era graphics. Look back to see the future since a lot of stuff released 10 years ago looks better than what's coming out today. What you haven't played is new to you, right? Osman was new to me until 2 weeks ago...

Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. It's a pretty good classicvania.

Rocket Knight has potential. I'm not a big fan of the series, but the guys responsible for it are a lot of the folks behind Contra 4 and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, so that inspires a lot of confidence, as far as I'm concerned.

I think you're just smart. Lots of peeps are like, "Man, Capcom is taking it back to the old school, this is sweeeet!" but really, this shit is the opposite of old school design. People forget that back when they were released, the Mega Man games had some nice graphics and some unique mechanics. (Well, not after forty sequels, but we'll ignore that.) But people think old school means nostalgic imitation--i.e., new mega man games, contra 4--when what it should mean is groundbreaking 2D art and unique, challenging design. I have no doubt that the next Mega Man game would be amazing if Capcom took the time and effort to make some excellent 2D art--games like Muramasa and BlazBlue show that this is still possible today--but nope, cheesy, half-assed, nostalgic cash-in it is. I won't even play the demo. It's a shame "hardcore" gamers will lap this shit up like it's honey when they should be boycotting it until Capcom treats players, and its famous franchise, with respect.

Oh no some niche title with some of the best music ever composed has made some people happy.

Fuck that shit. Let's complain about World of Warcraft or these strange "Final Fantasy" games that aren't Final Fantasy making lots of people happy.

What fucking retards they all are to enjoy something, and not be constantly miserable.

Although it is nice for game companies to bring remakes of their old franchises it would be even better if they put alot of work into the 2d art and wowed us. For example r-type final's looks and presentation were top notch. I hope that game developers dont just look at retro 2D games as easy cash from a retro hungry gamer who'll be happy with any old tat aslong as it makes the chap feel nostalgic

Are Megaman 9 and 10 easy "retro" cash-in titles? Sure they are. Should they have high-res 2D art instead of the pixelated NES-level sprites they use? Absolutely.

Are they still fun as hell with fantastic gameplay and level design? You better believe it. Worth $10? I think so.

Shud they be more expensive so they never would have been greenlighted or turned a profit? :|

for megaman im actually ok with it been a copy of the earlier NES titles but it would also be cool if they updated it aswell. And since megaman has been in as many different vg series as a sailor has had hookers then why cant we have both?

I don't quite buy the "never would've made a profit" defense--ZX was released on the DS for forty or thirty five dollars and sold well enough to warrant a sequel. Incidentally, those games, like the previous two games in the original series, look about thirty times better than 9 or 10.

There's also that new 2D Sonic game [Needlemouse] that's coming up, and I'm pretty hopeful, because all of the modern 2d Sonics [both Rush games, the Advance series] have been pretty good if not OMG AMAZING.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Yea the main reason why I wanted to pass on Mega Man was purely because it looks like they churned it out within 2 days work, I cant be bothered to play something that is looking like its made purely for a quick cash fix.

Games like Odin sphere,Blazblue ect are games that take months and even years to develop just by looking at a trailer you can tell some serious effort was made into creating it and its that quality that i admire. I think its one of the reasons why I dread remakes or remixes of certain games.

Some games mentioned I knew nothing about Needlemouse, bomberman I knew about MS7 and TJ&E

If im honest ive been playing some doujin games and they really do put most commercial games to shame there is some seriously talented devs out there.

To be fair, Contra 4 has some really beautiful spritework that isn't reused from previous games in the series. Just the running animation of the main characters is great to look at.

Dust: An Elysian Tail hasn't been mentioned yet? Has very strong Muramasa vibe to it, although Dust's furries don't look nearly as smexy.

I'm a huge fan of the original Rocket Knight and I have no hope for the new one. Looks like a bag of sick.

Capcom tried to do classic MM with updates before and it didn't improve over the classic games. Mega Man 8 had a lot of work in the 2D art and was good, but far from the best in the series. The updated graphics didn't make it more fun than previous game. The gameplay wasn't drastically different from previous main series games. It has some nice level designs and good bosses, but was strangely missing something from the earlier games.

Mega Man 7 was a step back. It updated the graphics, but combined less screen space with an annoying charge that was lost when Mega Man got hit. It was still a good game, but lacked some of the polish of previous games.

Mega Man 9 went back to the classic graphics, but also had some of the better level design, music, and weapon design in the series. It didn't bring much new, but it was a well designed game, that felt like it was far from something that was slapped together in two weeks.

However, it seems Capcom reserved most of the new stuff for stuff like the X, Zero, Legends, and ZX series. The early X games added new mechanics while staying true to the original. The Zero games drastically changed the mechanics around for something fresh and new. The Legends games were drastically different, but successfully brought the series into 3D. I can't comment on the ZX games since I don't have them, but the combination of Mega Man with Metroid style gameplay sounds interesting.

R-Type Final? Looks and presentation were top notch, but the gameplay was not.

I like the 8-bit Mega Man games, but come on, Capcom has made TWELVE of them. They've done everything interesting that can be done without changing the game mechanics. Time to move on.

I wouldn't mind another dozen Rockman games. I don't mind rehashes of a good thing although I do prefer the Rockman 8 engine.

I loved MM9, so I'm still kind of hopeful for 10, but it does feel way too soon and screenshots don't feel as lush or exciting as 9's did.

But what I've heard about some of the levels does give me hope: in one, I guess you're kind of in a giant... I don't know, desktop or something? And one of the enemies is actually a mousepointer that scrolls around and generates little blocks to throw at you.
