How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
Hey all -
I know there's a lot of divided opinion on whether gamepads or joysticks are better for playing shmups. I'm curious -- for those who play your shmups on the PC, how many of you own a gamepad/joystick that you use to play and how many are still rocking the keyboard -- whether by choice or lack of opportunity.
I'm also curious as to what sorts of control peripherals are popular. I usually use a wired 360 gamepad because it's what I have -- any others in that camp or is it just impossibly varied?

The built in 360 Controller driver has made my life a lot simpler.
Retro Console Shmups - SFIV Fightpad
Arcade Shmups (MAME and Touhou if i can find a simple way to make it work) - Hori DOA4 arcade stick. Not the best USB stick, but it does the job. Looking to replace it with an SFIV TE stick in the near future.

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
My current ones all count as 360 controllers. HRAP SE and a SFIV Gamepad.
I don't actually use the standard 360 controller though. I do have a PS2/USB adapter for an old stick and used a USB MS Sidewinder for years before my most recent updates.
It may have been discussed a few dozen times already but that comes with the turf I suppose.

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I have always been using the PC keyboard, but a couple of days ago I finally decided to order two Saturn USB joypads as they were only 10 pounds each. They're nice for Mame, but I hope they connect to a PS2 as well. Daioujou with a Saturn-Pad, a dream coming true.

USB Saturn pad and custom JLF/Happ button stick using a USB IPAC. I'm currently building a stick to replace the JLF that's going to use a Suzo 500 and Happ comp buttons.

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I use a wired third-party 360 controller I'm borrowing from a friend, although now it's more like I'm keeping it.
Ugh, I'm hoping the third-party Razer controller with adjustable analog sticks can hook up to a PC, however. That would be WONDERFUL. I'm looking forward to it.
I've never used an arcade stick, as I don't own one. ;_;
And I actually HAVE used a Logitech Wingman flight stick to play Stella Vanity once. It was hilarious. And I'm not doing that again. Ever.
I use the keyboard when I'm feeling lazy, especially since I need to reset all my joypad controls in MAME. ...I think I royally messed something up in there. O_o;
Laptop keyboards appear to be NOTHING compared to a standard keyboard, though. I was amazed at how well I played XOP on a standard keyboard at school (I brought it on my USB drive), and floored by how much better it was than my hand-cramping laptop.

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I've used a couple different controllers on PC:
One PC joystick that emulates a keyboard. Pushing directions or buttons is the same as pressing a key, as far as a PC is concerned.
One wired 360 controller. I use this mostly for dual-stick analog games such as Bullet Candy.
One PS2 -> 360 converter. I don't use this very much for PC, due to some issues with the default Windows 360 driver settings for directional movement (up/down/left/right input). It works, but is annoying to set up correctly.

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
Cheap and cheerful Dual Shock clone on this box, even cheaper four button and D pad jobbie on t'other one.
Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I use a Logitech Precision USB controller, I love it. I've also dabbled with using my PS3 controller for various games, but I prefer the Logitech's d-pad.
If I'm feeling lazy though, I'm comfortable using my keyboard to play. I can do ok using it, although I tend to do better with the d-pad.
I'd never want to try an xbox controller for shmups, though. Can't stand that d-pad and I don't like using sticks for shmups.

I use a seimitsu modded DC-stick with converter for most of my shmupping. I call her Sweetness...
Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I chose the fourth option for the poll, but for more details:
Astro City control panel (seimitsu w/ sanwa buttons) -> Jamma adapter PSX controller padhack -> USB adapter to PC

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I use this controller to play Mame & PC-Doujin games.
Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
Homemade stick. Ugly, nasty, but functional.
Recently I've been using the keyboard and noticing improvement... PROMETHEUS might be onto something here.

Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I use either my junky T5 stick with a adapter. Or if I don't feel like moving my laptop to a table I just use the keyboard.

USB Saturn pad.
Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
Custom CP(LS-32 & Sanwa buttons) with a PS1 controller PCB as Interface. Means I use it on PS1/PS2 and on my PC with an adaptor - lags slightly in MAME but it's not all too bad.

Either:
* Wireless Xbox 360 pads
* X-Arcade rewired with Xbox 360 wired pads
* PS/2 X-Arcade
* [New] New Astro City with either Sanwa JLFs or Seimitsu LS-32s wired through a PS/2 JPAC into a Zotac GF-9300 Mini-ITX mobo with a 3.1GHz C2D

perhaps they should make a sticky in each subforum that just contains a link to the search function

for PC games i use a wireless 360 pad....if i want to play arcade type games i would run them on my mamecab
Re: How many people own PC gamepads/joysticks?
I use a PS2 Saturn pad via a USB to PS2 adapter. My PS2's under my monitor, my 360's to the right of it, and my PC's to the right of that. It takes all of about 10 seconds to plug it into whatever I want, so I don't really see the need for a USB Saturn pad (which I also have).
