Dante's Inferno (PS3/360)

Post by Cthulhu »

Finally got around to trying the demo for this that had been out for a little while. I was pleasantly surprised, actually. Yes, the whole thing is a big God of War ripoff - but it seems to play pretty well all-around. At least they picked a good game to mimic. The fighting is smooth, the enemies seem interesting enough, and the later levels (just shown in the videos - I guess I'd expect the really cool stuff to be deeper in hell after all) look enticing enough that I'm probably going to buy this. Anyone else give it a shot?

I tried the demo. Every second of the game screamed "GOD OF WAR" so shamelessly that it put me off. It's just painfully obvious that it copies the GOW formula wholesale without really adding anything at all innovative or different. Of course, GOW is good, so Dante's Inferno wasn't bad on its own, but with GOW3 coming out in the next couple months, Dante's Inferno seems very redundant. If there are two games coming out soon with the exact same (great) formula, I'd rather award my money to the company that came up with that formula, rather than the company that stole it.

For some reason I really liked the demo...especially once I unlocked the parry move. That being said, it will probably be a rental while I buy Bayonetta.

Definitely prioritize Bayonetta. It's absurdly good.

For any of you who play through this game and have read the book, please let me know how they compare. I found the book very interesting and when I heard about the game, I wondered what they were going to do with it.

I haven't tried the demo yet but I can tell you they've taken many, many liberties with the story.

It probably won't be faithful at all to the book. So far, it sounds very God of War-ish. I mean, you know, waifu gets killed, go to hell, take revenge. They're just as much flicking the finger to the original work as God of War has done to Greek mythology.

Yeah, pretty much. The original is usually considered an indictment of medieval Italian politics. This game is about killing demons with a scythe. I think that will indeed make a better game. 8)

(On a side note, I'm guessing that the game takes place mostly in hell, whereas the story takes Dante through purgatory and heaven as well.)

Their strategy for marketing this game has included a fake religious protest, leaking an achievement called "bad nanny" where you kill infants, and sending $200 dollar cheques to reviewers. It has the tagline "Go to Hell," and the developer diaries show them on the verge of climax talking about how nasty and gory it's going to be. I don't think they will be respecting the source material that much, if I'm honest.

Speaking of, there was a PC-88 game based on the Divine Comedy that was supposedly pretty good, though I haven't played it yet.

There should be a game where you kill medieval Italians with a scythe. Politicans = bosses.

As someone else said, the game looks pretty neat, but definitely not a priority over Bayonetta.

I remember that time Dante was like "YO LET'S THROW DOWN YA OLD POPEZ" when he was going through hell, epic.

Or the time he shot the traitors like Judas being chewed in Satan's mouth to stop Satan recharging his health bar.

(Come to think of it, Satan doesn't seem to have a lot of ambition in the original.)

Er.

Just played the demo.

Holy shit, EA are making another good game? What's the world coming to - the thing is solid 60fps on the 360 at least, and I really like the design of the main character. It even allowed me to die by walking off an edge - oldschool! ;)

Assassin's Creed II. Kind of.

Wel, it's got swords and halberds and stuff. Otherwise, it fits.

According to the ad blurb at the end, the PS3 version is also 60 FPS. I'm not sure if the same team is doing both simultaneously or what, but the PS3 version looked really solid. (My US 360 went to RedRingVille, so I can't compare them.)
