X86000 emulator for OS X?

Post by ave »

Hi,
I just bought two games for the Sharp X86000 and as I don't see me owning such a beauty in the near future, I'd like to play the ROMs with an emulator :)
As I use the Mac OS X 10.6.2, I'm not sure if there's an emulator out there that is comfortable with my fruitloving hardware. If it won't work, I also have Parallels installed to run winXP. Would this work? Where can I find an emulator for the x86k? :)

cheers,
ave

XM6 is probably the best Windows emulator - I don't have a Mac so can't inform you on the front, sorry. There is a Java based emulator at link below, but you will need a very fast computer to run it full speed. If you do try out Otoko Dama, fairly good bullet hell.

If you want I have written a fairly comprehensive guide to X68000 emulation basics that was going to be posted on a X68000 shooter blog, as soon as I get round to making a blog account. Just PM me, same goes for anyone else interested.

Zophar's (lol, I know) says it was last updated in 2005. The page itself was last updated in 2004.

I remember fighting with an emulator which wouldn't display the background at the start of one of the stages in Dracula. That was EX68, however; different emu.

WinX68K High Speed seemed to get the job done very well without any obvious graphics glitches.

It's also fairly old though (it seems development of X68000 emulators ended about 5 years ago), 2004 once again.
Here's the page for that. http://www.geocities.jp/winx68khighspeed/

Don't know about that, not particularly bothered by that game tbh. I've not done in depth testing between the two but XM6 has the highest compatability rate as is the default I go for. Fair few games, HDD images especially, do not run at all on Winx68k. Its not exactly hard to switch between the two emulators if you want to play Dracula anyway. Not that I'm bothered as the 100+ shooters on the platform all run on XM6.

btw there are English (and greek) translations of Winx68k

You could always try MESS, which supposedly has a working 68k driver.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Forgot about MESS, looks like there is a mac port. I've used the windows version a couple of times and it does indeed support X68000.

Sorry to bump this, but I'm looking for a decent X68000 emu for Mac also. I found one but all the readme's are in Japanese, and I can't locate anything with instructions in English.

If this is the only one:

I'd be very grateful if someone could give me a quick hand setting it up.

Many thanks.

EDIT: got it, just put both system and data disk in simultaneously, reset emulator. Unfortunately I can only use the OpenGL video option to get full screen with a proper display, and then Phalanx's graphics corrupt on stage 2 so I can't see what's going on.

In other questions: the only stuff I can get to run on the emu are xdf executable files, which are separated into the correct disks.

I have another type of xdf labelled 'sprite' which are single files. When I put these into the emu, they load up and then I get a command prompt. Something like:
Command Version 3.00

A>ECHO OFF
(Some Japanese text here)
A>
What's the run command from this point?

Many thanks. :o

I don't have any experience with X68000 emulators, but you might want to make sure you have 2MB of RAM configured. Default for most is 1MB, and most games will simply fail to initialize.

You could look for an executable (.x).

On the actual hardware, you need to run the system disk and execute switch.x. This is essentially the BIOS, and allows you to set the total amount of memory installed. There is no automatic detection, and no way to access these settings without a Human68k disk.

Simply type dir to see all files in a particular directory.

To navigate to a folder in that directory, use (¥) in place of (/)

EX: A>folder¥subfolder¥executable.x

Okay, this might be easier. When I put Zugya in drive 0:

And the Human68k disk:

Unfortunately I'm not sure how to allocate memory, although I think it's showing 1.44MB?

At the B> prompt after Human68k loads, type switch.x

Ok! That got it. I used the switch.x prompt and adjusted the memory allocation the maximum possible, and Zugya ran straight off the bat.

I'm not too familiar with X68000 emulation: is there any possibility that over allocation of memory could cause problems, as I got graphical corruption on Moon fighter?

Or is it just unstable emulation?

One more thing if anyone knows: I don't seem to be able to boot DIM files, only XFD - is there any Mac program that can convert floppy file types DIM -> XFD?
