Recommendations for "quick" games.
I was just wondering what people like to play for quick and simple games. I want to get some new action in with my friends. I'm looking for games that are quick to end. The kind of games like Mario Brothers (the first one) Donkey Kong, Amadar, Qix, Dig Dug. The kind of games that you die quickly on so the next player gets a chance to top your score and doesn't have to wait 30 minutes. As always you know my style, the older the better. These can be one or two player games but since they are fast to end 1 player is also acceptable. Looking for more games to play on our game night that aren't Call of Duty. Qix is running a bit thin now too since they don't have my "mad skillz".

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Well, some older games that might fit that description are Bump n Jump and Sword Master. I remember having a lot of fun with those when I went to my friend's house as a kid. Also, puzzle games are always good (Bust a Move, Columns, Dr. Mario). I'd recommend some recent stuff too; Smash Bros. is great fun, and I hear New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be great for multiplayer. Racing games can also be quite fun; I personally recommend F-Zero GX.

We have been playing quite a bit of Bust a Move 2 for the ps2. Good game. Pukadon and his weenier which popes out makes the game complete.

What about fighting, racing and puzzle games? They are perfect when your friends come over. At my home we usually play Tekken 5, Saint Seiya (Sanctuary and Hades), Soul Calibur 3, Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary and Need For Speed (Carbon and Most Wanted).

My friends don't like Japanese fighting games because I usually win. I'm somewhat of a KoF fan and they don't like the "hard" button combinations...

you could try guitar hero, that's a good social game and the PS2 versions are dirt cheap

Just discovered Lunar Lander what a great little game. If you can get past the age there is a game hiding in there that is worth playing.

I have one of those Namco plug in game things, all the games on it are pretty good for that srt of thing (even though the stick blows). But I'd say my favorite is Rally-X.

Nice, I just got 33,710 in that. Feels like a more responsive Pac-Man with action and stuff.t0yrobo wrote:I have one of those Namco plug in game things, all the games on it are pretty good for that srt of thing (even though the stick blows). But I'd say my favorite is Rally-X.

My casual friends and I enjoy Worms Armaggedon a lot. It's a game that is fun to play even if you're losing because of the random shit that happens like shooting a bazooka and accidentally hitting yourself.
Mario games are also fun to play with others. Just pass the controller around each time someone loses or passes a level. Incidentally, New Super Mario Bros is around the corner and it looks like lots of fun with other people. My interest got piqued after seeing that they increased the challenge significantly from the DS game.

Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
The original Mario Bros. game is a lot of fun. Space Invaders for the 2600 also has a good 2-player mode with shared lives but competitive score. That one is surprisingly addictive. And there's also Warlords. Puyo Puyo 2 is another great 2p puzzle game-- it's one of those games in which players who are inexperienced can get decently far by mashing, but it still has enough skill in it that a good player will nearly always trump a bad one. And don't forget bomberman!
I find F-Zero GX has too much of a vast gap in skill levels between players to be fun multiplayer-- unless your other friends also own it and know how to control the thing!
Oh.. and millipede is quick

Super Stardust (HD) is my quick games fix atm.
Always plays away well and can either be played for hours on end (if you're good) or be fun for short bursts. Always gets the adrenaline pumping anyway.

Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
I actually really want to have a huge NES/SNES Mario party now. Not Mario Party. No, sir. But I think it would be hella fun to get a bunch of people together and play Mario games and arcade games and LAN some FPS shit and shit...I'd probably have to add some illegal drugs to get enough people interested, but I think Mario Bros. is perfect for this as well.lgb wrote:Mario Bros. is perfect for this, you could also just play SMB3 Pipesqueak for ages

Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
I'd second the recommendation of the PS2 Guitar Hero games. The first's probably the best bet, as the song selection in the second has a lot of tracks that can drag on forever.
Most music games should fit the bill, though. Especially if they've got peripherals. Everybody loves peripherals when it comes to gaming nights.

Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
I finally started playing the copy of Gran Turismo 2 I bought cheap on Digital Press a while back. I've got my B license with all silvers or golds and some of the A license test stuff finished as well. Cornering is still a bitch, but at least now I know how it works. Playing with a 360 pad + pSX 1.13 emulator. Yep, savestates helped cut down the time it took to get some golds, although I discovered that Garbage - I Think I'm Paranoid drives me nuts when it's just the intro over and over. The only track I like to hear on the license tests is Dragula. If only there's a soundtrack editor for the different modes...
Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
On the 360, I happen to like Geometry Wars 2 for a quick game. I haven't messed with the multiplayer modes at all, but Deadline mode takes only 3 minutes per playthrough, and most of the other modes are pretty quick as well.

Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
EDIT: Okay, I want to explain my choices a bit.
Games which tend to be short but you love every second of your minute and a half:
**SOLAR FOX** - One of the greatest adrenaline rushes ever. Can you beat the clock and skip ahead? Very easy to just pick up and play. And each board is different.
Some more off the top of my head:
Robotron - Another awesome adrenaline rush. Unlike it's predecessor Defender you are never wondering what the hell to do or how to stop crashing into things. Just shoot everything and grab the people. That's it. Almost every board has new kinds of enemies to figure out. An all-time classic. Even though it's hard you still love it.
Zoo Keeper - this game is so fast it makes your head spin. Box in the animals and try to grab the bonus items for max points. The shovel works like a power pill. Every level has the bonus items in a different place. Every so often you get a bonus stage. And THAT'S IT. Simplicity itself, it's beautiful.
Spy Hunter - So hard yet so cool. Shoot everything except your van. When you get good enough your car turns into a speedboat, YEAH.
The Electric Yo-Yo - like Solar Fox but with a nice scoring mechanic. You jump between the blocks and you get more points the further apart they are, but it's also more dangerous. Good balance of risk and reward. The sound effects are awesome.
Time Pilot '84 - like Time Pilot but so much more. Try to find the hidden bonuses. Killer music and sound.
Elevator Action - Incredible that a 1983 game lets you do so many different things with just two buttons and no funky joystick movements. Cool music. Like all the great ones it's much harder than it looks.
Arkanoid - Probably needs no introduction. Breakout with powerups and special blocks and enemies, it's a beautiful thing. Like most games on this list, it keeps your interest because every level is different. Gets harder very fast.
Joust - A great multiplayer game without the need for complicated controls. Kinda like Bomberman.
Crystal Castles - If you ever wished Pac-Man could move his butt a little faster, this is the game for you. Grab all gems as fast as you can. Every so often they introduce a new twist and you keep playing to see what they will throw in next.
Centipede - It looks easy until you try it. Each enemy comes at you a different way and one will get you while you are watching another one. Just brilliant. Everyone should at least try this game for a while once in their life. This was the first video game I ever played BTW.
and +1 to whoever said Rally-X! It's a blast.
I didn't mention Pac-Man because I'm sure you've heard of it (who hasn't), and when you get good at it you can play for quite a while. Defender is too complicated. Games of Tempest go on for too long. Etc.

Pac-Mania can be a quick game, if you set it to end at 11 rounds (possible on Namco Museum and arcade versions). A round can be cleared in about a minute- maybe a little longer if you try to group the ghosts and rack up a lot of 7650 bonuses.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Re: Recommendations for "quick" games.
Bubble Bobble is a great co-op (its on the taito legends pack and its sequel is on the 2nd pack) while not quick to complete if u play the acade version u can have infinate continues aslong as you partner is alive and pass the controller on per credit if theres a group of u. plus u could check out rainbow islands and newzealand story (im pritty sure they have alternating play for 2 players, but dont qoute me)
Plus you could check out those old party games for the saturn and dreamcast plus nintendos consoles
or theres always micro machines (great party game) theres a pritty recent pc version aswell but i dont know if the party aspects r as good as the old 2d megadrive games
or theres games like shinobi, bad dudes or ghost and ghouls (with gg ull be passing on the controller every 30 seconds)

Pretty much the definition of quick and simple (and fun, party, and low skill/comprehension barrier, which all seem implied by the first post) is PDA, the platforming game inside Alien Hominid. A lot better than the main game actually.
That's funny, Dragula is the only track I don't like to hear in Jet Set Radio.Ed Oscuro wrote:The only track I like to hear on the license tests is Dragula. If only there's a soundtrack editor for the different modes...
