What's your favorite classic game system and why? Classic being from around the 2600 and Odyssey 2 up until the NES.

Probably NES, but the 2600 sure game me a good run.

After the videogame crash of the 80's, Nintendo captured my heart and wowed me with graphics and sound I thought were fantastic.

Those aren't classic though! Man, my topic is a disaster :P I meant *before* the NES.. so, Coleco, Vectrex, Intellivision, Atari 8-bits.. dunno if I'd count computers since 8-bit computers survived well into the 90s. I like the 2600 myself, but I think a lot of that is nostalgia.

If we're talking pre-crash, I'd say ColecoVision. It had some decent Konami ports and was pretty much the first system I played that could non-laughably claim to have "arcade-quality" games.

I would say that the more classic a system was the longer it would last. The true classics survived the crash.

NES easily. For one, I'm a huge Nintendo fan, so I love all the first party titles, but there was so much more beyond that. Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Goemon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the list goes on and on. Even if for some odd reason you can't find any games you like on the NES, you've got to give it credit for essentially saving the gaming industry. Also, I feel obligated to mention Recca. Best shmup ever at that point in time, and very innovative (I'm sure many will disagree with me).

Colecovision, though my Atari 400/800XL gave me some good times if they count.

Atari XEGS (which was basically the next in line for the 400/800 series). It not only played most of the 400/800 games, it had games made for it as well. Rescue on Fractalus!, Ball Blazer, Mario Bros., Crossbow, Necromancer... lots of good stuff.

Megadrive/ Mega CD
although I just got into PC Engine and I'm really liking it so far!

Edit: Oops didnt read the OP completely!
I'm going to have to go with the NES, too many good memories there to pass up! I'm even finding new games to play, although Recca makes me want to pull my hair out and punch holes in my wall!

Megadrive/Genesis, though admittedly a little bit of me liking it is me rooting for the underdog, when everyone else I know is like "SNES IS BETTER THAN GENESIS IN EVERY WAY, FACT."

Less slowdown (sup, Gradius III), wider screen resolution, and a first-party game controller that doesn't feel like a little toy.

omg, the posts are creeping up to the top again

Mega Drive, almost without a doubt. There's lots of great games on the SNES, equal to Mega Drive equivalents...but not as much. And Sega's first party titles of that era > Nintendo's.

PC-Engine and NES probably get attention equal to the SNES from me.

cosigned :)

went through Spectrum and C64, didn't own a NES until much later so missed on the excitement of it at the time so can't really compare it post-event.

C64 had a glut of titles and the SID chip really set it apart sonically.

Probably my favourite system of all time.

Since the Neo, the Mega Drive/Genesis, and the Master System are technically post-NES, I'm going to agree here, though it's hard to deny the 2600 its Activision-infused glory.

Re: ColecoVision's Konami ports: I had Time Pilot, and my brothers and I played (and loved) the ever living *crap* out of that game (others, too, but since Konami ports were brought up...). We played until the stupid controller started to "crack" somewhere around the 2:00 area of the circle. Time Pilot was pure joy, if only for the fact of the machine's/port's limitations in the home setting. Many, many deaths were the result of "ghost shots" which, as you might guess, came from ships whose rigs had been destroyed, the shrapnel of which had dissipated, and yet *still*, somehow, some way, they would be able to fire from BEYOND THE GRAVE!!!!! This resulted in no end of *huge* amounts of both frustration and laughter whenever we'd be playing it.

I remember once watching my brother play, and he was absolutely marathoning the game, on his last life, of course, and he destroyed a ship, we watched it explode and dissipate, and then TWO SECONDS LATER, in the MIDDLE OF THE CLEAR BLUE SKY, we heard the sound of a now-completely-beyond-existence ship firing, instantly killing my brother who was flying directly into where that squadron had been.

To this day, it's still one of the most definingly-funny video game moments I've ever been a part of.

P.S. To Robotron: there is no time in the past, present, or future, where your listed "location" will *not* make me laugh.

I still says Mega Drive, NES got smooshed by it. Since they were out at the same time, it seems fair.

Obviously NES before that...earlier, I can't really say. I don't have enough experience with the Atari systems, Coleco, or Intellivision to say which of them I'd go for. Atari VCS doesn't have much quality but it does have a huge library. I'd probably pass on the SG-1000, although it does have some pretty decent games (Ninja Princess and Adventure Island come to mind).

I'm a noob. NES was my first system, so nothing to contribute here really. I *vaguely* recall a friend's Atari (no idea what model), but other than that I draw a total blank.

Well I'm going to have to go with the Vectrex for my vote. It just looks and feels so Darth Vader.
