Anybody's kids play shmups ?

Post by lawnspic »

I have a 12 and 5 year old. My oldest use to play Metal Slug, MVC but that was about it. My five year old like's alot of new stuff (RE5, Halo ect.) and would always complain to me to turn off those "Flying games" because to her they are boring. Today i threw in Mushi for Ps2 and now she wont give me back the controller (must be the cutesy character with the bug theme). Anyone else have kids that play shmups?

Shmups are a pretty difficult intro to video games, because my kids
don't have the hand eye coordination to get very far. If I let them
do the shooting and I do the dodging they have a good time though.

When my sister's (twin girls ~ 13 years old + their baby brother approx. 10 years old) kids where visiting this summer, they played Ketsui, Raiden III and Bubble Bobble. The girls kept teasing their brother for wasting time on "silly games" when he had the chance of playing SHOOTERS! :D

I just hope my daughters grow up to be this "cool". 8)

Yeah, my youngest was credit feeding but i was surprised how well she was weaving and using bombs. Maybe she might like this genre someday. Most likely she will be glued to social networking like Facebook and Myspace like my oldest.

My kid plays better than my mom. My mom might as well be blind though.

I remember once giving my son the controller to gitaroo man and he started to do everything so perfect. It wasn't until about 3 mins into the level I noticed it was actually my replay. Everyone else in the room was in awe of his skills for those 3 minutes though and his face was so full of concentration it made it so believable.

Well, I gotta say she's got very good taste already! :)

I don't have any kids, but I can't wait to teach my nephew how to play shmups when he's a couple of years older than now.

I plan on beating my kid like a red headed step child if he plays too much current gen.

My little brother likes Metal Slug, and I got him into Star Soldier R. I dunno how much he actually plays them, but just the interest makes me pleased.

I've tried to get my little sister to play them for years. It's a shame she's so damn lazy and hates anything challenging. So she goes and plays RPG's and animal crossing in the corner, along with smoking pot and drinking beer, that she stole of course

kids these days

I don't think you're going to have a kid for much longer then.

My older sister is naturally better at arcade-style games than I am. Fortunately, she's intimidated by the appearance of bullet hell, so she doesn't really try to play them. This saves me some heartbreak and humiliation.

I am a kid.

Anyway, as for genre shoot'em'ups might be one of the hardest to introduce. I remember what kind of coordination I had when playing Megaman X1. I died repeatly on the Hawk-boss ( or was it a falcon? ).

Eagle.

I'm not a kid anymore, but I was introduced to shmups at a very early age and it's given me awesome reflexes (which is a good thing especially for a klutz like myself, I drop so much stuff that I'd quickly go broke if I couldn't catch it on the way down) so I'll probably try to introduce them to any children I have

I tried introducing shmups to my young cousin but it's kinda hard to make him understand that you shouldn't credit-feed. Actually it's hard to introduce shmups to anyone. People are so used to credit-feeding they don't even bother not doing it.

Either they credit-feed the whole game, really enjoys it, but then don't play it anymore because they made it to the end; or they attempt to play using a single credit, fail miserably and dismiss the game as being too hard.

My daughter just completed Mushi on credit feed. I put on Ibara and that was a no go, i guess the roses and cute heroines could not convince her with so much going on the screen at once. Maybe Galuda tomorrow, she might dig it if i tell her there is fairies in it.

Yeah, my sister would just feed until she got bored on most games, but I had DDP set to no continues. At first, she couldn't even make it to the first boss, but with some practice she got at least to the second. It was pretty neat.

My boy (9) sometimes plays Ikaruga (GC) with me on the Wii and has been known to play Metal Slug as well.

He likes watching me play shmups but he prefers FPS games which is cool since I love them too and we often play co-op in both online and campaign modes; he's quite a deathmatch player for his age :D Bizarrely first game he played was Dead or Alive 2 on XBox when he was 2 (I only know this as I have pictures!)

OT...
My daughter (just 9) loves DS/PC/Xbox 360 and current favs are Plants Vs Zombies and anything Viva Pinata related
Step daughter (5) loves PvZ and Mario Kart DS.
Youngest daughter (1) loves watching me play Super Stardust or NiGHTS due to the bright colours

My five year old loves watching me on them but as far as playing goes I can't drag her away from Animal Crossing/Sim City type stuff on the DS. My son is due at the end of the month, I intend to start brainwashing him early :D

Well, there has to be some negative implication for failure. At least if you credit feed in an arcade there's some cost involved.

Obviously my 3 year olds (almost 4) don't have the hand-eye coordination to actually do well at a shmup, but they do think it's fun and they get animated enough that it's somewhat physical. It seems they don't really have the ability to do multiple things at once. They can dodge somewhat well, but when you remind them to start shooting, then they stop dodging well.

I haven't let them credit feed yet, but I think I'm gonna hook them up with "strong mode" in DDP DFK and allow them to continue. They "get" the part about the game being over, but they don't understand why one of them might be done and the other still going.

DDP DFK should be better for young ones than Ibara I think.

I was just thinking how different my childhood may could have been if i would have had access to a DFK PCB ;)
When i was 3 i only played Super Mario Bros. (and i was pretty good i might add, but i couldn't beat it until i was 4 or 5 - and then it was Zelda that caught me).

My kid won the very first round of VF he ever played . . . online against an unsuspecting opponent. . . at 8 months old. The other guy must have been too confused by a lei-fei who actually blocked.

I figure C-Strong in DFK is the equivalent of Lei-Fei, so maybe I'll test that theory next time I'm heading to the arcade. I reckon he ought to at least beat the first boss.
