My PS3 Slim is arriving next week - need some games!

Post by kengou »

Ordered a PS3 slim, and I need to decide on games to get. I've already bought LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4. I enjoy action, adventure, fighters, sims, and anything shmuppy or arcade-y. I don't generally like RPGs. I won't play FPSes on a console, I have a gaming PC, so please don't recommend any of those. That goes for most games with a lot of analog-stick-aiming too, I just need my mouse-aim for that sort of thing. MGS4 is of course the exception to the rule. I'll probably CQC as much as possible anyway.

Here's some stuff I'm looking at:
  • wipeout hd
    astro tripper
    super stardust
    ninja gaiden sigma
    burnout paradise
    motorstorm 2 pacific rift
    ufc 2009
    blazblue
    Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
What would you guys recommend? Anyone have opinions abut the games on this list? Stuff to add? This includes PSN and games from any region. I'm also curious about Uncharted (and its sequel) and how central the shooting is to the game.

motorstorm 2 (and 1) is great fun, go with that.

Dirt 2 sucks, stay away from that.

only other non-fps ive had was armored core which was somewhat fun but never really stuck with me..

Uncharted is laid back and nice looking. The puzzles are super easy, but I didn't mind at all. Perfect for your less-than-hardcore gamer. Shooting is at least half the game, maybe more-- can't remember exactly. I'm thinking that Tomb Raider Underworld is the same sort of thing.

I like Everyday Shooter better than Super Stardust. I recommend giving it a try.

My favorite games for the system are Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 3, and those are the only games I recommend highly. Obviously, those aren't a good fit for you.

All 3 of my PS3 games are RPGs.

But I'm still going to recommend Demon's Souls.

Be sure to sign up for the Japanese PSN site as they have some cool PS3 demos worth the d/l. And if you can get access to a JPN Playstation Store Card, then buying games from it is another cool bonus.

Yes, by all means get the Wipeout HD d/l and get the WO-HD Fury expansion pack also. It looks and plays awesome with the silky smooth arcade-spec 60fps framerate with 1080p support.

I'm not sure if it is still possible to d/l Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo HD game anymore but that was one of the cool perks to had d/l'ed back in late 2006. It still stands at GT-HD version 1.1 as of right now with a single minor update to it and no other official support from dev PD whatsoever.

If you like the Ridge Racer series, Ridge Racer 7 is another cool racing title worth playing with friends and foes from other countries. It basically expands on the gameplay introduced in the PSP game of Ridge Racer.

If pinball is your thing, then d/l Zen Pinball with the four pinball tables + newest 5th table of "Street Fighter 2 Tribute Table" which is another additional purchase off of the USA-based PSN site.

Demon's Souls - great action rpg that really makes you feel like a badass when you kill a boss or get through a level. Also has one of the best atmospheres of any game I have ever played.
Infamous - fun open world game with a surprisingly interesting story.
Uncharted - there is quite a bit of shooting, but the story telling and characters in this game are just too good to pass up. Seriously, get this game.
Ratchet and Clank - cool platformer, plays pretty much the same as the PS2 games.
Batman: Arkham Asylum - if you like batman at all rush to the store and buy this.
Skate 2 - great skateboarding game, sucks that EA has decided to milk the franchise. They recently announced a third one out soon. bleh

Burnout - Dead Space - Uncharted - Infamous

I'd say they are my favourite 4. Wipeout HD is great too.

Thanks for the responses! My thoughts so far:

Infamous - I love the concept, but I've seen my friend play a good deal of it, and it just looks like too much of a shooter for me to enjoy playing it. If I hate aiming at things with analog sticks, does this seem like a fair assumption?

Same thing with Dead Space, looks great, but I don't think I would enjoy the shooting aspect. Shame that I hear the PC port sucks, or I'd give that one a try.

Demon's Souls - I'm definitely considering this, I've had plenty of recommendations for it. Will keep an eye on it!

Virtua Fighter 5 - Reeeeaaaally want to play this, but the lack of online play is a real killer. I have VF4:Evo, and VF5 doesn't appear to have significant differences other than the few new characters. It would also help if I had friends who would play it with me, but since I don't, I don't know if I can justify getting VF5 just to play the singleplayer.

Ratchet & Clank - Haven't played any of these but I've heard nothing but good things. I'll look into the newest instalment.

Way of the Samurai 3 - I didn't know this game existed! I own the first one on PS2 and enjoy it. What is different/better about the 3rd one, and is it in english?

Everyday Shooter and Batman I already have on PC, but good recommendations since I enjoy both of them.

Wipeout HD is definitely a good buy. Especially if you like difficult games (assuming you play through on elite anyway). Zone mode is really intense and fun.

It used to have one of the hardest Trophy sets to attain in any game, but when they came out with Fury, it trivialized most of them (Zone Zeus could be done much easier because there were 3 almost oval tracks added in fury, Upgraded ships = easier to obtain Beat Zico and all the other golds really). This kind of sucks because I worked my butt off to get them >_> But the game is fun as hell, and equally cheap.

Uncharted is a great game, well worth getting.

Fwiw I really like Super Stardust as well but I'm not sure if it's that popular in these parts

Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are, and will be, great. You will have to do some aiming with the analogue stick during all the fighting (it does have CQC but you're shooting most people), but there's a lot of traversal and, frankly, it's worth it.

Blazblue is on your list, do you not have a 360? Because there's a ton of multiplatform stuff.

Nope, I do most of my gaming on my PC but I have a Wii, a PS2 and a Dreamcast that I play pretty often. PS3 is my first/only "HD Console."

Metal Gear Solid 4, it is my favorite PS3 exclusive... and one of my favorite next gen games.

My bad.... you all ready listed that. Just to give you a heads up Wipe Out is being released in the UK as a hard copy blu ray retail disc with the game and the recently released update fury pack all in one for about 40 or 50 bucks.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

The entire Wipeout HD + Fury update pack weighs in at over 1.7GB easily of a PS3's HDD space usage (including all the earlier updates to the WO-HD game itself). Will SCEE add some more bonus content to fill up some of that empty space on the Blu-Ray game disc? Yes, a real physical disc copy is cool to have for posterity in the event that the PS3 HDD does bite the dust sooner or later. ^_~

Ah, then there's a lot of stuff. People are just naming exclusives here.

Devil May Cry 4 - Maybe not as good as the previous titles but still fun enough for me to complete it 3 times.
Dead Space - It's third person! Worth it for the parasite death animation alone.
Pure - I like it.

My experience with PS3 is limited, but I'd suggest:

- Demon's Souls: the main reason I'm getting a PS3
- Soul Calibur IV
- Mercenaries 2
- Dead Space

*Fat Princess: Plays a lot like Team Fortress, looks fun but I get the feeling it becomes boring after a while, mainly because people don't work as a team and it's just mayhem all the time.

Ooh, forgot about Mercs 2, I was interested in that one. Might check it out.

As for Dead Space, I've played a good amount of it with a friend, it was good, but not something I'd typically buy.

Just make sure to get WipeOut HD in any shape or form. Got Demons Souls coming up and it seems like it's also got the kind of challenge any shmup fan should like. Can't wait!

As I've only watched some plays and the trailer, it looks cooler & more fast paced than the other (especially the flying with VOB part & fighting the Arms Fort), although seems a bit easier...

If you like pinball the Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection is damn good and cheap.

I'll second Mercs 2. It has flaws, but is still enjoyable.

I love it. Like Gespenst already mentioned it's a helluva lot faster, not only the few VOB launching in some stages, but also the whole gameplay in general - quick boosting and faster boosters in general available in shops compared to the older games.
What I personally don't like about the game is the new "headquarters"; while I have absolutely no quarrels with the new shop, I think it's very sad that the whole "Headquarters" setup is gone: no email-system, no separate menu points for garage, etc... Just a missions-list and AC system menu.
Also, heat management is gone too - there's only energy penalties you have to manage. This automatically means that there's no "Flamethrower" weapons in the game.

On the other hand the addition of Stabilizers and NEXT fine-tuning are both very cool. With stabilizers you can adjust your NEXT's (AC) center of gravity and the huge repertoire of them comes in lot's of different designs which can be used to style your mech in a very detailed way.
The fine-tuning system is used to optimize different aspects of your NEXT and make it possible for e.g. carrying more weight than your legs allow, stabilize aiming precision, tweak energy recovery, etc etc...

But one thing is for sure: taking down some of the AFs is sooo satisfying!

You might want to grab the basic Wizardry:Torawareshi Tamashii no Meikyû demo-package on the Japanese PSN - it's completely bare-bones and I haven't played much of it, also I don't know how much the language barrier will prevent from enjoying it, but hey, it's a free tryout.

Other than that, I really liked Dark Mist, it's a cute dungeon-crawler arena shmup that's fun enough for a few playthroughs.
