Help! Recommend me a good shmup

Post by g@mer »

Hi guys. I would like you to recommend me a good shump (not easy one) on Playstation2 platform.

It seems like there are not many shumps for Playstation2? I love those arcade games. I used to play those old ones in early 90s. (Truxton was my best game)

So, is there any good (graphics and all) shump around these days?

If you guys know one (or few), please let me know! Thanks. :)

If a PS2 is all you have, I recommend getting it to be import friendly.
There are actually quite a bit of shmups for the PS2!
If you can only get one game right now, I would suggest Gradius V. Plus, its available in all regions.
ALso, don't forget the large list of PS1 shmups that you can play as well.

What consoles do you have, and what regions are they?

I don't own it (yet. I have the first two DonPachi games though) but DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou seems a natural first choice.

Actually there's plenty of shmups for the PS2. I would say Gradius V would be a very nice introduction to the PS2 shmups.

You can get it anywhere for a good price, It's the best out of the series, very nice graphics, true to the oldskool gameplay of the previous gradius games, very challenging, and one of the best shmups on PS2.

There are others, but alot of the best ones are import.

It was in Virgin for the cool price of £19.99 :) or I think £30 for 2 titles together, the other titles that had the offer I wasn't interested in.

To be honest with the PS2 nothing so far onthe import scene warrents me to mod the console as of yet. but you'll never know 8)

My favorite shmup for the U.S. PS2 is Castle Shikigami2 (aka Shikigami no Shiro II). It's only $9.99, so you can't go wrong.

thanks for your opinions. I have already checked on Gradius V. By the way, my Playstation is for US/Canada.

I noticed lots of good ones are only for Japanese version? Or Saga system, etc.

Oh, I forgot to tell you.. I prefer vertical ones better (though I may buy Gradius V).

How I wish I could play Donpachi series! It sounds great and hard one.

Is there any good vertical one??

P.S. Somebody please help me remember the name of this game!! (some of the screen shots are on the main page of classicgaming.com)

The shump with lots of sea creatures, including this Sealacanth as the first boss. I used to play this and the 2nd one but can't recall the name! Anyone? Thanks

Mainly Dragon Blaze (Psikyo Collection vol. 3) or the Cave games (DDP DOJ, ESPGaluda and soon Mushihimesama). Castle Shikigami 2 is the best localized vertical.

Again, get Castle Shikigami 2 . Its only $9.99 and it can be played in full TATE. (vertical scroller) .
So much better than part 1 (Mobile Light Force 2 in USA) also a vert.
