A new 2D Sonic?
Re: A new 2D Sonic?
Let's keep our fingers crossed for good leveldesign.
I want something that's more like Sonic The Hedgehog for the Mega Drive / Genesis.

The smart money says that by "2D", they actually mean "2.5D".
Re: A new 2D Sonic?
I wonder what crappy gimmick they will throw in this time to make the game unplayable

That's what I'm thinking. If they go for hand-drawn graphics though, respect.E. Randy Dupre wrote:The smart money says that by "2D", they actually mean "2.5D".
Re: A new 2D Sonic?
Sonic Rush was a worthy recent 2D sonic. We might just get something like that. We can but hope!

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
Hopes have been raised with the announcement of a new Sonic, with the standard claims of Sonic's return to form. Next up: The introduction of an ill thought-out gameplay mechanic to piss on most anticipation for the game.
Sega already tried that with Shadow the Hedgehog. Then again, that whole game was a gimmick.Specineff wrote:A polarity switch!

I need a game that lets me put Sonic out of its misery permanently.

I will see what happens between now and its release. Its sonic and if they are going back to the original formula it could be great. choice words being 'could be'

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
Although I was (mostly) joking with my last post, there's no rational way to judge the game right now without some screenshots or gameplay footage. So yes, it could be great. Thing is, you can't blame anyone for having extreme doubts instead of anticipation for this new Sonic considering the amount of times they were probably burned before with the last few entries in the series.
At this point, I can stay neutral by just waiting and seeing how it turns out. Really!
Also, this NeoGAF thread about Project Needlemouse is mildly entertaining:

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
I genuinely hope they've gone back to the old Sonic design:

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
It's probably going to be a remake of the first one, with 3D graphics, like the Castlevania Drac X Chronicles.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
so the fake site with all the project needle mouse stuff looks more promising than anything that sega has come up with in the past . . . how long has it been since Sonic adventure?

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
I don't think the reason for the crappiness of almost every recent sonic game isn't that the recent ones are 3D and Sonic should go back to 2D. The reason (I believe) is that Sonic Team just can't make a good sonic game anymore. Clearly 3D isn't the problem because Sonic Adventure and its sequel are great. Like most rational people I'm going to assume the new one will be crappy until I hear otherwise in actual reviews, or give it a try myself.

Re: A new 2D Sonic?
Perspective isn't the issue, I can agree with that. Both Sonic Adventures are examples of competent 3D Sonic games, even with flaws that were evident when they were released and are more obvious than ever today. It's that most of the Sonic games in 3D are known for introducing some of the more reviled features of the current games. Things like forgettable new characters, gameplay gimmicks, copy-paste storylines (ancient/apocalyptic evil force overshadows main villain, cue Super transformation) just to name a few.kengou wrote:I don't think the reason for the crappiness of almost every recent sonic game isn't that the recent ones are 3D and Sonic should go back to 2D. So what I think is that part of Sega going back to a 2D perspective for Project Needlemouse is like going back to simpler times for the Sonic series, in a way. Taking aim at fans' nostalgia is a perk of such a design choice (see also: Bionic Commando Rearmed, Mega Man 9).
