10 years ago I was on a trip for school while I had my dad wait in line at Target to get me one with Sonic Adventure... ahh...
Happy Birthday Dreamcast.
Happy Birthday Dreamcast.
Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
Jesus, that makes me feel old. I remember playing Headhunter and Shenmue 2 as it died, and wondering how on earth Sega had managaed to mess it up quite so badly. Its launch conststed of the most interesting and eclectic mix of 2D goodness and 3D newness of any console I've owned.

Cheers to you, Dreamcast!
I love you, even though your controller is terrible and your hardware tends do die a lot.

Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
The laser seems to die quite often and the controller ports like to get busted.
But who cares, the lineup is great!

Anyway, excellent console. Happy anniversary!

Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
I'll be playing some Ikky, Border Down, and Under Defeat tonight to celebrate!
Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
I unfortunately missed the boat when it came out, and only discovered how amazing the console is last year when I picked one up. It is now hands down my favorite console, it is full of some of the most awesome 2D and 3D games around. I have had to get inside and tinker with it to fix it a couple of times, but it's 9 years old so whatever. I'll be playing it a lot today to celebrate!
Quick, what's everyone's favorite DC game, or alternatively a not-well-known game you would recommend? For me, Aerowings 2 has gotten a ton of play, the flight mechanics and dogfighting is some of the best around!

My US units always died fast, lasers mostly, but some overheating as well. Happy Bday.
My jpn system with the liquid cooling system never had any issues and still runs cool. I got that one a several months earlier than its US counterpart.
Now I know why I had the urge to play Sega Rally 2 last night

Jet Set Radio and Power Stone are the two titles that fully encapsulate the Dreamcast's awesomeness. Sega's finest hour in my mind

Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
Indeed, a happy 10th to one of the greatest consoles of all time. I have three (two Rev1, one OC'ed Rev1) and I don't think I spent more than $100 on the systems themselves combined. Even though Sega made mistakes in the previous generation, snowballing into the Dreamcast era, they built a hell of a machine and it's legacy continues to live on.

Ha ha, I like.Elixir wrote:BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
The Dreamcast will live in memory as the console that should have produced a finale to one of gamings most brilliant works, Shenmue; a series that walks the earth as ghost with no final resting place.

Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
I'm sure all those unsuccessful hardware add-ons, the short-lived Saturn, and Sega's horribly bad business decisions did nothing to the reputation of the Sega brand and the Dreamcast.lgb wrote:not sure if *they* messed it upMarc wrote:wondering how on earth Sega had managaed to mess it up quite so badly

I actually went out and purchased two CR2032 batteries once to replace the dead ones in the VMU because I was tired of the beep startup sound and I had wanted to try some of the mini games. They were dead a few days later.Elixir wrote:BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

I have to say it's nice to be out of the last decade, gaming-wise. Much better days ahead I think.
Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
I think so. If nothing else, there is much more respect for gameplay now than there was in the late 90s. By that, I mean that the complaint "It looks like a Genesis game!" holds no water. Downloadables are big. Scoring, to some extent, is back in games like Pac Man: CE or SI Extreme. It's interesting to see that since 3d has reached the "good enough" stage that the focus has shifted away from polygon count just a little.Ed Oscuro wrote:I have to say it's nice to be out of the last decade, gaming-wise. And not to derail the thread: Yep, the DC very easily is my favorite console of the last generation, and is among my most-played systems. Both its tech and game library were amazing. It's too bad Sega quit the hardware race, because it seems like their systems always brought a disproportionate amount of arcade ports stateside.

You're actually meant to take the VMU out of the controller when you're not using it, or it will drain the batteries. Of course nobody knows this still.junkeR wrote:I actually went out and purchased two CR2032 batteries once to replace the dead ones in the VMU because I was tired of the beep startup sound and I had wanted to try some of the mini games. Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
Wow, 10 years? I need to fire up my DC tonight & play some Gigawing

Re: Happy Birthday, Dreamcast!
Sega also used to suggest that you re-insert the activation tab when you are not using it. You know, that tiny bit of plastic you pull out to wake it up and chuck away instantly. :|Elixir wrote:You're actually meant to take the VMU out of the controller when you're not using it, or it will drain the batteries.
