Saturn Thunder Force Gold Pack 1 - Not that good

Post by DazTM »

Was playing through this the other day and the music seems really weird. It seems to loop really quickly and isn't at all like how I remember the Megadrive version. Is there any other changes in the game?

I haven't noticed any differences in it at all, not even the music.

DazTM is correct, that there is a difference. I wrote about this complaint too a while back on the previous shmups forum. In summary IIRC, the pacing of the music in the Saturn version of Thunderforce III is broken, because it simply loops one full play of the track from beginning to end, instead of the proper way the music is played on the Megadrive version which is more of an A-to-B loop of the chorus part only which never actually stops the song or returns to the beginning. This difference in looping throws off the sound of the second half of each stage completely in the Saturn version, since the appearance of certain Megadrive stage elements and enemies with cues in certain parts of the music, no longer happens right in the Saturn version. In addition, the recorded CD audio reproduction in the Saturn version doesn't sound as rich as it originally does coming from a Megadrive.

And that's why I'm content with my Genesis games and not plunking $40 for this compilation alone.

I shouldn't cost you that much; certainly not any more then both Genesis games together, if you want the cartridge, instructions, and oringinal box.

*shrugs* I personally think both packs are great deals.

I got the second pack for slowdown-free IV and to sample AC, but the emulation inaccuracies in IV actually bothered me. The music did sound worse, IIRC. Not my best purchase, not my worst.
