DoDonPachi was the first shmup I can remember giving me that "I want to play MORE!" feeling. I had Cybercore on the TG16 years before, but even then I only played it between sessions of Bonk's Revenge. It wasn't until I discovered MAME and DoDonPachi that I really got into shmups.

Posibly, the first shmup I remember is Terra cresta. Then I usually didn't play a lot, only perhaps to R-type in Spectrum and some coin at arcades. My definitive coming-back to the genre was through Ikaruga in Dreamcast. Now I'm recovering the lost time :P

R-TYPE introduced me, Gate of Thunder made me a fanatic. Then I discovered the Shmups site in early '99 and my shmup collection really took off with help from the old school forum'ers.

Hori shmups were my fave as a kid after playing Nemesis and being quite good at it. Then Gemini Wing and the Shoot 'em up Construction Kit on the C64, then U.N Squadron and Super R-Type on the SNES then up to Ika on the Gamecube which got me back into shmups.

I now have a JAP Saturn and I'm saving for Radiant Silvergun. :)

For me it was Thunderforce III. I had played Galaga, Defender etc. before that, but back when I first owned a Genesis I saw TFIII sitting in the game store, and picked it up because it was cheap and had cool cover art. I had never really played anything like it before; even though I had experience with the above arcade games and some NES shmups, this just felt totally different. I thought the game was fiendishly difficult (if I knew then what I know now, heh), but I eventually managed to complete it and had a hell of a time doing so.

I'd played shmups before it, but it wasn't until I played R-Type III that I really got into shmups.

Defender...1980...I was ten...and in love/obsessed!
Phoenix, Gorf, Vangaurd and Star Castle were all close seconds.
Nowadays, I can't stand playing the likes of these longer than 5 minutes at a time. (except for Tempest...its really aged well)
I guess I already got my fill...as I even owned several LED games back then. Still have Mattell Electronics Football though 1977 :)

Thunder Force IV was what first made me take Shmups seriously.
Like "WTF, I can't believe what I'm playing on my little MD!"

Errrr, does Jungle Strike count?

I've always liked shmups, however the 3 critical titles for me would be R-Type, Raiden and Radiant Silvergun. I played them all in the first few months of their release and they made a huge impact on me.

I can't say I'm a mad fanatic shmupper at the moment - mainly because I've not being playing many games recently. However, it was R-Type II that got me started with shooters. I saw it in the ferry terminal at Felixstowe (UK) when I was a kid, and was enchanted by the demonstration. I didn't get to play it though :( I didn't get to go to France either, since there was a bloody bomb scare and I went home with my mum. How poo :(

I'm a late bloomer with Ikaruga converting me 100%.

I had played Pop'n Twinbee, Strike Gunner S.T.G., and Super EDF before but it wasn't seriously. Since getting hooked on shooters with Ikaruga, I've gone back to buy a Saturn, Genesis CDX and model 2, 32X (yes just for Kolibri), Virtual Boy (again just for Vertical Force), Turbografx-16 and Coregrafx 1, as well as more shooters for the other systems I had already. Hopefully I'll be getting a PC-FX soon too.

Whenever I'm walking around, if I pass by an arcade, I MUST go in and see if there are any shooters. There aren't many arcades where I live here, but while I was in Hong Kong last summer, I hung out at arcades a LOT :) Especially at the place with $1 HKD Ketsui :D

Oh yeah... but since Ikaruga is the big one for me, I tend to prefer vertical shooters rather than horizontal.

Well, I loved shmups when I was a kid. My first 3 non-Mario NES games were King's Knight, Dino Riki, and Sky Shark.

But it really wasn't until my roomate pointed out that I was doing incredibly well at Ikaruga and Mars Matrix that I realized that shmups were providing something that I had felt had vanished from gaming... and that was providing fun gameplay!

Dangun Feveron.

I started shmupping two summers ago, when I decided that all other genres were too easy, and DF was the first game to make me go HOLY CRAP!. Previously I had checked out the Pachi's in Mame, and a bunch of others, but Feveron is the one that I remember distinctly. Well...there was Lightening Force back on the Genny, then Giga Wing 2, but those really don't count since I didn't play them all that much.

I remember reading IGN Cube's article on the port of Ikaruga, and being so surprised. I had clicked on the link not knowing what to expect, I wasn't familiar with Treasure yet and they described it as a "shooter." I expected it to be just another FPS. When I saw the screenshots, I said to myself, "Holy shit, I love those kind of games." I had played a fair amount of Galaga as a kid, and I would play Strikers 1945 or Raiden or the like whenever I could find an arcade machine, but I had never gotten seriously into the genre. I even had a Genesis as my only system for many, many years, and I never owned a shmup for it. I don't even remember seeing any shmups back then, although maybe I just wasn't looking. Before Ikaruga came out, I also got GunBird 2 and MUSHA.

I had initally surmised horizontal shmups were dreadfully dull. I owned a copy of Sagaia for the GB, and found it so boring, I thought it was indicative of the whole sub-genre. However, in my early experiments with MAME, I tried out Salamander. Earlier attempts with side-scrollers hadn't quite so impressed me, but Salamander grabbed ahold of me. Later, while in Japan, I was in an arcade and had tried out every other shmup in the place, and decided to give Gokujo Parodius a spin. Almost immediately, I knew all my prejudices against side-scrollers were wrongfully held.

Gorf was my first, Life Force made me love them. Einhander and Super R Type got me back in to them after a long absence, Radiant Silvergun got me serious.

Truxton on the Genny. I had played alot of shmups prior to that, just cause I was into videogames/fun, in general, but Truxton really grabbed me. Oh, along with Forgotten Worlds, also on the Genny :D

Hmm...years ago I rented Axelay, Space Megaforce, and a few other shooters on my SNES, and enjoyed them while I had them, but never bought 'em...then, more recently, on a whim I traded for Megaforce with a friend of mine and started playing it again, and got into it for awhile. From there I started looking around online for people's opinions on other shoot em ups I might want to try; one review led me to MAME and DoDonPachi, and that was it. Soon thereafter I bought my Saturn, and it's been more of the same since.

It was either Guwange or Battle Garegga, I can't remember which tbh, probably both.
I got a modded Xbox in 2003 and finally played those 2, then I began playing both religiously before proceeding to get a Saturn and quite a few shmups and dabbling in PCBs for a short time. At the moment all I have is Espgaluda and DDP:DOJ though
Mushimesama soon though :D

I played Raiden II at the arcade and immediatly knew I needed some to play shooters at home. The machine has been removed since then, though.
