What bugs me about this article is that R-Type never seemed repressed or homoerotic. There's a long history of sexuality in science fiction horror, stemming from the works of H.R. Giger, that isn't really repressed at all. And there's nothing specifically homosexual about the game; there's lots of opportunity to jam your force in the the enemy's 'womb'. So while yes, there's a 'erotic' aspect to the game, used to unsettle and enforce the horror-in-space theme, but the article as a whole still feels pretentious and a stretch of someone's repressed homosexual imagination.

That's a lot less of a stretch though, especially if you've seen any of Giger's concept art for the movie. Like how the opening on the eggs was modeled after a vagoo, etc.

Doubt it, this is the kind of article that would launch Icycalm into a frothing nerdrage about how he utterly failed to understand R-Type and is a retard artfag, etc.

It always seems like it's 50/50 slathering praise/frothing rage, and I can never quite call which is which. He's pretty sweet on Tim Rogers, for example, who could be cited as one of the progenitors of the current "artfag" trend. Not to get too off topic or anything.

Someone should do a parody "Repressed homoeroticism in Cho Aniki" article and completely ignore the obvious stuff while grasping at total BS. A paragraph on the intentional design and phallic symbolism of the numeral "1" in the player score, etc.
