im wiring up my joystick for the first tym...
how can i tell what ways face up firstly? for up n down?
erm theres a five pin connector but i dont have th cable can i jus solder there directly, or do i do each microswitch?
also is com gnd?
and i do need to follw gnd all the way around
on my db15 i only need one ground an that shud b it right?

So, you didn't get that extra cord with the connector with your JLF? I remember getting such a cable with my first Seimitsu LS-32-01 sticks. This quick connect is very hand when connecting sticks, especially the ground, as you just need 1 gnd connection.
Take your stick apart and look at the solder lines on the PCB, and you will be able to tell which one is gnd, and which are for directions. Write this down on a piece of paper and take note of which way the little connector is pointing and it'll be quite easy to solder/wire it up.
