Parasol Stars

Post by rtw »

I have put together a small package for all all Parsol Stars fans.

I think it's time that we all the learned the secret of the large drop so we can find the secret doors

Why this was never ported to the arcade is beyond me!

Although the general gameplay is different, Spica Adventure for the Taito Type X is a great arcade parasol platformer. Not sure why you didn't want this if you liked Parasol Stars.

I uploaded a crappy handheld video of the first level here.

This particular game was released in the USA as well. To this day, I still haven't got in my TG-16/PCE gaming collection. Perhaps I should fire it up on Magic Engine emulation and see what I've been missing all those years when it comes to classic Taito console puzzlers such as this one. ^_~

Thanks for the cool Japanese PC Engine manual PDF upload of Parasol Stars, rtw.

You don't have the first ever Working Designs localization in your collection?!?

Parasol Stars is amazing and addictive! The gameplay is tops and builds on its predecessors.

With that, I am forever thankful that Mr. Ireland brought this over for folks like me, who in 1992, didn't know much about what was abroad.

I didn't get a Turbografx-16 console until early 1994 when they were being sold brand new for $29.99 USD at my local Toys-R-Us. Glad to have picked up NEC's Aero Blasters and Cyber Core for a mere $19.99 USD brand new back in early 1994. Finally scored a brand new Turbo Duo console in late 1994 for a mere $99.99 USD and it was the very last one in stock...I was so stoked that day when I finally bought it. ^_~

That's cool to learn that the USA release of Parasol Stars was Working Designs' first game release. How much does it go for in mint and complete condition or brand new condition these days? I do have a handy and trusty Hu-Card convertor so playing those cool PC Engine Hu-Cards ain't a problem on the ol' TG-16/Turbo Duo/Turbo Express. ^_~

Hey, I always knew how to get the big drops and how to get to the secret last world.

You need to get a MIRACLE on each level, i.e: getting three element cards. The catch is that they all need to be the SAME card.

If I remember correctly, when and what card shows up is linked to how many bonus items you've got and how many enemies you killed.

Because of that, on levels that had enemy generators, you should NOT kill them fast, let them generate a few enemies so you can get more kills.

Is all that on the manual? I had to figure out that shit by myself. Played the Amiga version a lot back in the day, one of the finest catch'em up games ever. Bloody brilliant.

Love this game to death, best I did was get two silver doors to appear in the boss rooms, both times via the rainbow necklace (I only ever got this thing to appear twice, first both times it granted me the 99 continue coin, second time also came with a large orange ball that auto kills the last boss's first form). Big thanks for the manuals, I'll be firing this one up again on emulator very soon. Just wish the VC release had also been in the US, sadly it remained in Japan.

I always thought not releasing this on arcades meant we could have shit like 99 continues drops and extra credits by milking the levels.

I don't remember any arcade game giving "extra credits" for good playing.

You mean you need to find 3 crests within one world ? The crests would be: Water, Fire, Lightning and Stars

The crests will be released on the next level if you make 2 large drops on the current one.

Kiki Kaikai arcade does... when the game's over, there's a slot or bingo type of game. I've just read an interview recently that says the developers were told "from their superiors" to put it in there. Odds of getting an extra credit were 1/20.

Crests?

Shit, I need to play it again. I am confunding the terms here.

Theres something that appears outta nowhere on levels sometimes, it's like a flying card, and it keeps floating. They are the Water/fire/lightining/star stuff.

You have to get 3 of the same kind on the SAME WORLD to open up the door.

What determines which one will show up is linked to how many enemies you've killed so far.

I need to play it again to remember properly, but it's something like that.

Nice feature, however the developers also allowed this to be controlled by a DIP switch.

Recommended factory setting was ON though.

It might be me but the first time I played Guwange I thought Kiki :D

I didn't realize Parasol Stars was the 1st WD localization - TG-16 only, right? If so, I'll have to track that down!

Yep, the USA localization of WD's Parasol Stars is for the TurboGrafx-16 console alrighty. I recall seeing an ad for it in an old issue of Video Games and Computer Entainment -- was a full page ad btw. ^_~

^^ Do you remember what year that was or what issue, specifically? I still have all my old back-issues of VG&CE, so if I know where to look I might have to dig that out :D

I'd have to go through my old issues of VG&CE to find out which issue it's in -- perhaps it might be best to check in the 1991 labeled VG&CE issues since the game came out in 1991. Quite a coloful Working Designs ad for their first game indeed. ^_~

I like Don Doko Don, but I never got into Parasol Stars. (I'll sell my copy at a reasonable price if someone wants it.)

The Amiga version was made by Graftgold and published by Ocean, pretty much like Rainbow Islands

I've 2 very good Jap links about the gameplay:
http://tekipaki.jp/~rueben/game/parasol/index.html
http://whss.biz/~mrx/game/pce/parasols/pssframe.html
On the 2nd link the player score +150M.pts. I try to find something on video...

I have this on that weird Saturn version. Bubble Bobble arcade, Parasol Stars, and then a 3D version of it.

EDIT

NVM, its Rainbow Island that I have.

I'd love to see a video of the entire game, Nico has a few videos, but the player gets the bad ending. These pages also seem to explain what all the items do, but I can't translate them, big thanks for the pages though.
