Contra Rebirth

Very
Nice

All they have to do is release a hard copy and I'll snatch it up in 2 seconds flat. Digital Downloads can kiss my ass. Incidentally, paid Downloadable Content can go fuck itself even more.

Yeah, I doubt this'll ever get a hardcopy release. For my money it's worth its own disc judging from those movies.

I admit I dissed this when I first saw some low-res screenshots; obviously, I was completely, utterly wrong. Everything looks good and the machine gun bullets move the way they're supposed to (COUGH CONTRA THE FOURTH). The robo-llamas...oh my god

Even the helicopter looks right (although I wonder if he swings in from it off a rope...of course you can't see in the explosion. Nice Hard Corps reference at least).

Notice the Devastators-style font on the Game Over highscore screen? 8)

More HC references in the second movie (I forget where "the elevator bridge is falling when the boss dies" first showed up, probably HC, but certainly C4 anyway), and that rock boss looks pretty awesome. Looks Gradius-like actually (wouldn't surprise me if this team also did Gradius Rebirth, but I know nothing about that one).

The artstyle looks bang-on. Contra 4 theoretically had nice art; it certainly had talented people doing it, but it didn't look like the old games and there often wasn't enough variety (which isn't to say this will have tons more, but C4 was also often slow enough that you could notice). This reminds me a lot of a classic arcade game, especially with the cheesy Assault-style scaling effects, but more importantly the lack of fear of deep gray on edges looks familiar.

So yeah...it's a Contra for the new era!

____________ pause for breath? ____________

(the pause that refreshes)

OK, this is definitely going to be my "Arthurs feet hide in the grass" moment, but check out how Bill's feet actually seem to press against the floor.

Compare that with the sliding characters of Contra 4 (with their unnecessary windmilling limb movement frames that frankly looked odd).

Non-clipshow vids, including footage of the other secret character.

I'd be on this like chocolate on peanut butter even without a proper hard copy. But as Konami seems to hate Europe nowadays (still no Gradius Rebirth here) I wonder if I'll ever get the chance...

And I guess I'd need a Wii too, that kinda sucks.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Looking good*. I wish a new 2D Contra would bring back Shattered Soldier's strafing controls, though. Or at least make them an optional control scheme.

*And sounding good too, nice to hear Contra III and HC music again.

I'm not seeing anything other than side-scrolling 2D levels, so this is already shaping up to be better than 4.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

When I watched those two videos, I couldn't help but think Metal Slug doujin with heavy irem influences. They totally ripped of that The Hunt boss in that pit level.

I'll be getting this. Loved Gradius Rebirth.

Only... you don't play as the contra guy? Instead you're some robot thing? lame...

And they aren't all actually the same character and hitbox but with different size sprites (which seems to be the case in Contora FOUAH).

No idea if they have different weapon loadouts, but the robot seems to control slightly differently from the others.

Also, it looks like there's room for maybe two more players. ;)

Holy crap, I didn't hear about this before at all. Looks damn cool, will definitely buy this.

Incidentally, the visuals remind me of Contra Hard Corps more than other ones for some reason, not sure why. Maybe it's the skeletal-jointed looking robots?

Joints would indeed be a sign of Hard Corps; but then again, Contra 4's bosses looked nicer than HC's, and the actual artwork in this game reminds me most of a cross between AC Super Contra, Contra 3, and other Konami stuff.

It looks alright I guess, I just don't like that it's still the same Contra. Another Super Contra/Contra III inspired game feels too regressive after having SS and Neo. It's nice they have Jaguar in the game, but it would of been better if the sprites had been based off their Neo Contra designs. My only complaints is that after 20+ years the Contra series hasn't moved on, still no melee attacks and the same 'headless chicken' enemies inhabiting levels.

We need a new contra not a remake, even though I will probably still end up buying it......something like Shattered soldier (yes I did enjoy that one) is where we need to be heading.

Beef up the visuals and give us more explosions than ever before it wouldnt hurt to add online co-op too :D

Yeah, I'm ready for a Contra and Gradius 5 on PS3/360 in HD. I'm incredibly ready for that.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I wonder if we'll ever get another SS, stylistically. As long as they're good games I don't mind the aesthetic throwbacks, but ideally I'd prefer another Contra that just gave an almighty finger to nostalgia. It's uncomfortable to think of the series' image as mothballed and relegated to nostalgia-bait.
