RPG's similar to The Adventure of Link?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I love this NES game and remember beating it, so I'm looking for other RPG's that are similar.

I just started Link's Awakening on the SNES, and it's beautiful! :D I'm wondering if I should buy the Nintendo Power Guide from Ebay, but so far the game seems pretty self-explanatory. I love the Mode 7 maps!

The Battle of Olympus (NES) is pretty close in style. I've finished both games and love each. Olympus is easier (thought not a pushover), but I found its world more charming. It's pretty fun just seeing where you end up next, since it doesn't follow a locale -> palace structure quite as obviously. Wonderful soundtrack, too.

Soleil on the Megadrive is pretty cool. Not as good as Zelda but nice enough.

Faxanadu/Dragon Slayer II and Castlevania II: Simons Quest are both awesome if you want more of the side scrolling adventure stuff.

Battle of Olympus is a good game. I have it. 8)
Also Star Tropics looks good, I've only played parts...
Also the "Mana" series. Or at least the early ones.

Zelda 2 is kinda risque. The women will take you inside their houses for sex.

I guess I'll be the first to say that Zelda games are adventure games, not RPGs?

Well, Zelda II have a lot of RPG elements such as EXP and random encounters. The other Zelda games are definitly adventure games though.

I second Simon's Quest on the NES, but ZALTP is very hard to beat imo. Indeed an amazing game!

I really want to recommend Legacy of the Wizard, but it is quite a bit different than Zelda II, and I know a lot of people hate it because of the difficulty. None the less, it is one of the best action-rpgs on the old NES.

Actually I remember that one quite fondly-I rented it back when I was a kid. And it's dirt cheap on Ebay! :D

Difficulty is not really the issue with that one. It's mostly just lazy, bad design, like the jumping puzzle where you need to be facing a certain direction in order to move certain blocks, many, many hidden passages with tons of dead ends, places where its impossible not to take damage and so many more things I can't go on. Terrible game.

Popful Mail (Sega CD), Exile (PCE/Genesis).

I loved it!

Inventive design: lots of maze-like passages with dead-ends; obscure block pushing; seemingly random jumping puzzles; highly damaging and challenging traps, enemies and obstacles; multiple characters with varying atributes required to pass certain areas like Wonder Boy III or Popful Mail - so many great design elements I can't go on.

certainly a love it or hate it affair.

After reading about the game I realize it is considered a Metroidvania adventure game - not a sidescroller Adventure of Link title like the thread asks for.

Ah, glad to hear I'm not the only one who enjoyed it back in the day.
I also purchased a new copy from eBay for like $3 back in 2001, and play it quite a bit, but did not complete it again. Still enjoyable though!

Popful Mail is one of the better Adventures of Link type games on a Sega system. One of my favorites.

I'm looking forward to playing Exile one of these days...

Ys I & II Complete and The Oath In Felghana (all for PC) should be mentioned here. With a bit of searching you can find English translation patches for all three online (or worst comes to worst, use a FAQ; they're A first, RPG second). Fantastic combinations of twitch 2D action and RPG level building, and all three are gorgeous looking & sounding too. On the off chance you've not played them yet (I put off the series for a solid decade), they're some of the most rewarding gaming time I've had outside of shooters lately. Levelling / item upgrading is fast-paced and rewarding, and boss battles have that classic "thank god it's finally dead" buzz of triumph.

The original Ys III (SNES / Gen / TurboCD, among others) is... well, I won't chuck anything at Ex-Cyber, but it doesn't have many of the series' better points (outside of fine oldschool game music). Definitely give the above three a shot if Ys III sends you running for cover. Felghana is a total re-imagining of Ys III, and having made a point of clearing the original before playing the remake, I'd never advise anyone to bother doing the same. Felghana pretty much erases the original off the face of the earth, as I'm sure was Falcom's intention.

Golden Axe Warrior on the SEGA Mastersystem;
It's almost a complete rip-off of Zelda and, now it comes, IT'S BETTER THAN ZELDA! <_< >_> *puts on adamant armor*

@Bill
How dare you compare Adol's awesomness to Link?! Blasphemy! :P

That indeed brings us to another point about Ys: you actually feel like a badass swordsman! Well, in the same way Gradius makes you feel like a badass space pilot. Adol's strategically bulldozing ultraviolence is way beyond anything encountered in Zelda games. Ys bosses beat up other ARPG bosses for lunch money all the damn time too.

Hell, Ys I Complete's action is so good it made an escort mission fun. "Enemy at six o'clock!" BLAOW. "LOLOL - oh shi" *last minute save; monster guts go flying everywhere* Silent Hill 4 should've taken some notes.

The violence is indeed one of the best things about Ys. I so enjoyed the enemies in Felghana blowing up violently that the bosses not blowing up in a spectacular show of guts and blood was a disappointment. It just didn't feel right to me that the normal enemies die more impressively than the bosses.

I am one of those who also LIKE Legacy of the Wizard.

Fantastic music, and great challenge. I spent months playing this game and enjoyed it, even though there were some frustrating parts and a bit of backtracking which can become redundant, but aw man, the music is phenomenal… It keep me going I guess.

I also will second another Broderbund release, The Battle of Olympus. I am looking at going through this game again while off work, and the musics is great in this game too.

Regarding Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, I won't throw things at the mention of this game, I quite like it. But it do pale in compare to its predecessors in game depth and challenge. The musics are good though, as expected from Falcom… I guess the biggest thing for me in regards to Ys III is its total lack of challenge. I think I conquered it in a weeks time on the Turbo Grafx 16 CD rom system. I paid $59.99 for it back then too…

Regarding Exile, its a decent game too, but I found it short and not too difficult either, but fun and well the music is pretty decent, I really like the town music though… I had started the sequal, Exile Wicked Phenomenon, and I can say it is a bit longer and a bit more challenging, as I didn't finish it (yet) ie it was taking long time compare to the first game which I was able to finsh without putting major time.

Popful Mail, another Falcom masterpiece with, yes, great music! Sega CD version is different than PCESCD version however. PCESCD has the old Ys attack method of the taping and Sega CD has actuall attack button, where you have to swing your weapon to attack, like in most games.

Wonder Boy games are always good games and can't go wrong with them.

Well thats all I can say for now… great many games here to play!
