I was very nearly lost for words, until I remembered I could say "what a bunch of cocks".

Minimal development investment: check
Smallest library: check
False shortages: check
Already outpriced by a better system: check

Time to raise the price!

what the fuck...!? the cost price of a wii (ex VAT) is already £147. or to put it another way, when you buy a wii console for £179.99 in no package deal or anything, even at the rrp, the retailer only makes a tenner

what's it gonna be like now...!?

edit: would have been FAR better idea to take wii sports out of the console package and make it a £19.99 release, and keep the console as the same price

double edit: if a retailer doesn't hike the price, they will lose £9 each time they sell a console. good one

triple edit (LOL): pretty clear who won this generation :!:

pffft fuck that! thats disgusting.

thing is game and the other big boys will be getting deal on buying shit loads its the indie who are going to miss out on this. Since a lot of them dont enforce set packages like game do.

Still thats a fucking disgrace. Considering they have been raping us for the console prices for years and now that the pound is not worth as much they are raping the people who sell them! Fuck you nintendo fuck you!

A 20 quid raise on a Waggle Gamecube? LOL!!!!!

Nintendo: "You'll take it anal, like it or not."

If they happen to pull a similar move in the US, they can suck my balls.
"Sooo, what was it that you consider a 'good salary' for a man to make?"

News like this only makes me more content with my old Gamecube, and previous generation consoles in general. I'm still waiting for the PS2's price to go down some more, though.

The GC didn't have enough good games to be content with it.

It had Smash Bros Melee, Metroid Prime, and Baten Kaitos. Those alone made me a happy camper for years. I guess I'm just easy to please. :?

Glad I bought my US Wii when the £ was incredibly good :)

Even including shipping & Taxes it cost me WAY less than a PAL machine & it means I could play No More Heros with proper blood   not to mention Smash Bros months before the UK.

I'm really beginning to think Nintendo have lost the plot now.

I wonder if each console will come with a tub of KY Jelly for the extra £20 to ensure the arse raping is slightly more comfortable.

I love it! Nintendo conquer videogameland with the same iron fisted tactics that made ex President Hiroshi Yamauchi Japan's richest man.

Through and through, Nintendo prove that they're a serious games based business. They don't make Hi-Fi's, they don't make PC's - they just make games and games consoles which turn profits.

Keep it up I say.

I see what your saying & I agree it could be to do with that, but it also begs the question why we arent seeing it across the board??

Not only Sony & Microsoft but also with TV's computers etc.
Most of which seem to still be coming down in price.

I think this is just Nintendo realising too late that they could have sold the console for more & made even bigger profits & are now going to try & get the bigger profit.

Nah, the pound value against the Yen is shocking, it's not surprising the cost is increasing. They just happen to be the only ones rutheless enough to just go ahead and do it.

UK government knife-crime expert seeks game tax

* By Luke Anderson, GameSpot UK
* Posted Mar 11, 2009 6:18 am PT

Advisor to the prime minister suggests violent games should have "very high" tax.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's special envoy on youth violence and knife crime, Richard Taylor, has said that violent games are too cheap and should have "very high" taxes to keep them out of the wrong hands, according to The Daily Telegraph. Taylor is planning to raise the issue with Brown as one of a number of measures intended to reduce the number of knife-related crimes in the nation's capital and is currently preparing a manifesto for the prime minister.

When speaking to the parliamentary Home Affairs Committee, which is responsible for examining Home Office policies, Taylor was quoted as saying, "I have young people who I mentor, and I see them go up and buy the games and it saddens me that [the games] are being able to have such a negative impact." Taylor has been tasked by the government with helping to devise policies for changing youth behaviour. His own son, schoolboy Damilola Taylor, died at age 10 in the London inner-city suburb of Peckham in 2000 after being apparently stabbed with a broken bottle. Two other boys--aged 12 and 13 at the time of the incident--were later convicted of manslaughter in relation to the killing

Taylor's remarks coincide with a government plan to reduce the number of knife crimes. The £2m plan, Tackling Knives Action Plan, is due to be announced by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith today. In related news, Independent Games Developers Association CEO Richard Wilson has lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority regarding another government campaign aimed at improving the quality and length of life of Britain's youth.

The advertisement, part of the government's much-heralded Change4Life campaign, features a child holding a PlayStation controller and the words "Risk an early death. Just do nothing." The campaign is supported by Cancer Research, the British Heart Foundation, and Diabetes UK. Wilson said, "This advert is absurd and insulting in equal measure. To imply that playing a video game leads to a premature rendezvous with the Grim Reaper is a non-sequitur of colossal proportions. Alcohol and drug abuse, smoking, obesity, and involvement in violent crime are forms of behaviour that risk an early death."
Feedback will set you free.

If you play good games I don't see why this is a big deal. Gamecube had none and neither does the Wii

Same here.

Jockel>

The bullshit of being limited to 50hz shitversions on Virtual Console.

The way that PAL gamers get ripped off on World of Goo (and possibly other downloadable titles?).

I'm sure there are many other reasons, but as I've not bought a new Wii game since... last spring, or whenever it was that No More Heroes came out... I don't know.

The ol' adage "it takes money to make money" rings true in the video game console wars and Nintendo ain't no stranger in that particular enviroment. Consider how much yen it costs to make a single Wii console and still be able to sell and make a profit on it -- profit margins are indeed quite slim. It's the software for the Wii that really rakes in the yen/dollar/pound/euro, for Nintendo's 1st party in-house produced game software. ^_~

And SCEI still is losing money by selling it's PS3 consoles at a loss...it's through SCEI's software division that reaps in the profit. Eventually, there will come a time when SCEI will be able to turn a profit on the PS3 console when manufacturing them becomes cheap enough to do so. The price point of the USA region PS2 Slim console still hasn't dropped below the asking MSRP of $129.99 USD and still continues to sell well at that asking price. Of course, those who wanted a PS2, bought one many moons ago and albeit, at a higher MSRP of course. That is the high price to pay for such early adopters of new fangled hardware. I forked up the asking MSRP of $599.99 USD for a USA region PS3 with 40GB HDD back in late 2006 and have no regrets having paid that much for it -- video games as a hobby ain't cheap, especially if you want the latest and greatest that it has to offer. So be it. ^_~

I won a wii at a trade show i went to. Before it had even arrived I had put it up for sale. I got 170 for it :D

I had one doubt in my mind its been about a year since that and there has not been one game thats made me think, Wow this console is a keeper thats been out in the past year.

It is very harsh that the ones selling the consoles will be getting a rough deal but they will just enforce packages with games to milk the customer like they have done for years. It sucks but then its not really my problem im an end user why should I care. Even if I did own a shop I would just stock less wii systems becuase its not worth as much and tell my people on the floor to push the PS3 and the 360 more.

Nintendo... they used to be my heroes. When they do things like this it's like getting slapped in the face with an electric eel.

What the hell happened? Nintendo used to be all about the joy of gaming. Now they are an evil corporation from hell, with only one goal -> release the same games over and over again, and make every game linkable to each and every fucking game. Add some fucked up colors and make the games look sooo attractive to kids that every parent around the globe are forced to buy Nintendo's shitty crap, or their kids will kill them in their sleep.

Fuck I hate Nintendo nowadays, except for the portable side of Nintendo. Nintendo DS and GBA kick ass, and always will.

But Wii is what proves that Nintendo doesn't care about their old fans at all. They only care about the money. Fuck that.

Too bad some fanboys defend Nintendo in everything they do..
I know a guy who thought that Nintendos press conference on the last E3 was great. He said he was probably going to buy every game they announced (what was it, Animal Crossing Wii and some crappy upgrade to Wii Sports?... WOW!), because they all seemed great.

They would [kick ass], if Nintendo would limit the amount of ULTRA SHITTY SHOVELWARE that gets on the systems. There are literally only 10 good games on the DS out of dozens upon dozens, and 20-30 on the GBA.
It's making me seriously want to just go buy a PSP.

Well the PSP doesn't even have 10 honestly awesome games, so..

I think the DS has a fair amount of great games. What contributes most to its greatness though, is that it plays GBA games too - otherwise the GBA would kick the DS' ass any day. (Not the first version of GBA though  )

Sorry, but NO company is ever "all about" anything but turning a profit - once any business stumbles upon a workable way to make more money, they WILL exploit it, no matter who they tick off or rip off. Nintendo's no more of an exception than anyone else, and never has been - I'm not anti-Nintendo, but sorry, that's just reality.
