So, I just played the original version of Alien Hominid

Post by 320x240 »

Can anyone tell me what's so special about this game? It seems just like any other flash game to me - designed by someone who has no clue. It's all about the hype I guess.

It's a poor Metal Slug ripoff, so people who haven't played Metal Slug naturally think "wow, that's cool" without knowing how uncool it is in comparison with its predecessor.

It really is nothing more than an expensive flash game. The art direction, though cute, constantly obscures bullets, the sound and music is dull at best, there's barely any difference between special weapons, and the game is too exhaustively long for its own good.

I'd say the game is merely mediocre, and it certainly is no where near as good as Metal Slug. People were saying that you'd like Alien Hominid if you like Metal Slug, but I disagree. I love Metal Slug, and I resent being tricked into thinking this was the same and buying it.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Why all the negativity? It may not be a masterpiece of anything, but it's far from being crap. It's pretty entertaining at the very least, and there are some pretty cool ideas here and there.

Also, what's the point in comparing it to Metal Slug? Just because it's the same genre? So every single game in a certain genre needs to be at least as good as the "best" or else they're not worth playing at all? Can't you people just try to have a little fun with the game without thinking "GAH THIS AIN'T MS I WANT MY MONEY BACK" every few seconds? Maybe you'd enjoy it a little and feel less ripped off of your money (for the PS2 port, that is).

It sucked. It was, originally, a flash game. It was ported to the PS2, Xbox, GC, and Xbox 360 Live Arcade. ALL of them sucked. Because they were the same game. Do you know what happens when you play a game you don't like on a different console, when it's the same game? It still sucks. Since I'm a fan of Metal Slug, I didn't like how it tried to cash in on the series.

Castle Crashers is a much better game from the same company. Unfortunately they have a (shitty) gimmick where you're able to play as Alien Hominid in Castle Crashers if you purchase it and have save data of the original game, for 360. It's a cheap tactic to make people buy Alien Hominid, just for one character in Castle Crashers. I didn't end up bothering at all.

got it on xbox live to see what all the hype was about. found it boring and repetitive. some of the bosses were ok. haven't bothered with it since.

It was one of the first big overhyped indie games, and sadly it seems it's nowhere near the last.

Frankly, its original claim to fame was that it's brilliant by the standards of Newgrounds ca. 5 years ago. Without that context, it's really hard to see why anyone would think it's very good.

You recall wrong.

I enjoyed it for what it was. A run 'n gun with an interesting visual style, a quirky sense of humor, and a decent challenge. It gets a bit drawn out towards the end, but I felt the game was good overall. Not the best game on the system, but far from the worst.

It's been 5 years already? Time flies. I understand where the hype is coming from now.

That goes for movies and books too. Terminator 2 was already made; other action movies need to GTFO.

Well, my PS2 version sure isn't.

If it is, that's the... least noticeable cel shading ever.

Sure, it's not the best game ever and it doesn't live up to the high standard set by Contra or Metal slug, but at least it's another run & gun game -- a genre the world use more of.

So ... Can't complain too much. Sometimes I play the GBA port for a few minutes, until I get my ass handed to me, and then I give up. :D

It's not. Here's a video of the "Cel shaded shooter action on the Xbox 360" in which you can clearly see is not cel shaded:

Maybe he's confusing cell shaded with cartoon style.

I bought this game and was pretty disappointed.

It's not that I thought "hey, this isn't as good as Contra or Metal Slug", it's just that I thought it wasn't very good.

I also didn't care for the cheap looking Flash graphics. The designs weren't bad, but it needed a lot more work.

And this game was received pretty well by the press. Just take a look at Game Rankings.
