Re: The Supergun discussion and Q&A thread.
thought id show my SG off a bit more;
from the front, here you can see the stick connections, the buttons to control the video converter and the kick harness inputs, coin button on top;
and here's the back, showing the jamma loom, test button, audio out, video out and power wire;
inside is an arcade psu and a RGB to VGA converter, which is the same one as kowals', plus a couple of fans to keep things cool.

Fuck I gotta find something cool to put my Supergun in. We have a bunch of old Cisco routers at my office that would probably work very well ... and they might even have a usable power supply ...

Re: The Supergun discussion and Q&A thread.
Alright, I think I'm onto something here ...
THE CISCOGUN
So we have these old 1700 series Cisco routers at the office. Some of them really don't work any more, and even if they did they're not very well suited for anything.
Pics:
The front
The back -- I've already removed the guts, lots of cutouts for mounting connectors and running the JAMMA harness out.
Internal - a small fan, lots of shielding which can be removed for more space.
The power supply for these units is pretty weak (+12V @ 2.0A, +5V @ 3.0A, 30W), so I pulled one from a 2600 series that I'm hoping will work, it's 50W (12V @ 1.2A, +5V @ 9.5A):
It fits great, should be no problem to wire up a standard 20-pin ATX connector on it for my Vogatek Mk II, has a switch and a standard 3-pin IEC AC plug. However I'd like an expert's opinion on whether the supply is powerful enough ... I've looked at the specs on a few arcade PSUs and the numbers sound a little low ...

Re: The Supergun discussion and Q&A thread.
don't know if it's suitable for a supergun or not, but I used this same PSU in my NES pc and it's worked great. It really is tiny.shmuppyLove wrote:A co-worker recently picked up one of these for a mini-ITX system he was building and I thought, "Hey, that's cool, I wonder if it would work well for my supergun?" (Vogatek MkII)
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=29462 ... e=Mini-Box
It's a 60W Pico PSU, basically an AC-DC converter with a small DC-DC converter with an integrated voltage regulator packaged on a really small PCB with a 20-pin ATX power connector. The PCB pigtails out into drive connectors (could be handy for a fan) and a female connector where the AC adapter plugs into, which looks like it could be panel-mounted without much effort.
I have a feeling if 60W is enough to power a whole computer, it should be plenty for PCBs, but thought I would ask those that are more knowledgeable about power draw for various boards. This would mainly be for single PCBs and a 1-slot MVS, I'm sure it wouldn't be enough for the PC-based stuff (246, TypeX, etc). There are higher-output models available for a bit more $$$, would it make more sense to go to 90W or 120W just in case?

OMG 1000 posts and I've come full-circle, quoted my own post in response to a question
I'm pretty cheap so being able to scavenge the Cisco stuff would be awesome if it works. Those pico PSUs are about $60 for the AC-DC converter and the DC-DC board kit.
There probably isn't any risk in trying the one I've got, so I might just give it a go. Might depend a lot on which PCB is connected.

Well, I guess this answers my questionkowal wrote: power:

I got a PicoPSU and it seems to suffice just fine as long as you don't put more stuff drawing power in your supergun like a scaler etc. Nice idea using the router.shmuppyLove wrote:Well, I guess this answers my questionkowal wrote: power:

Doing some test fits / prototyping for the Ciscogun:
I think the existing back cover will have to go -- I could cut out more openings for what I need, but I think it might be better to just get right of it entirely, and mount the inside components on a thin piece of board or something.

Could a uvc be used for building a supergun?

It would only be useful for playing high res stuff on a low res screen.Drachenherz wrote:Could a uvc be used for building a supergun?

Re: The Supergun discussion and Q&A thread.
Whats the best guide these days for constructing a supergun? I'm mostly interested in figuring out stuff about power (fuses and such) and any extra circuits I need for audio and dealing with the 4th jamma / mvs button vs hooking up a kick harness.

Re: The Supergun discussion and Q&A thread.
I feel like the best thing to do is type "build supergun" into Google and cross-reference various guides with various discussion threads, like this. That's how I got my supergun working on the first try. I'm tempted to do my own work log and guide just so there is something recent for people to use as a reference.Zapf wrote:Whats the best guide these days for constructing a supergun? This and this might be good places to start, though they don't mention the better audio attenuation circuit.

Thanks guys.
I found them on ebay, try searching for 'jamma cover'.shmuppyLove wrote:Hot damn that's nice.

They're for selecting mono/stereo, attenuated sound on/off, jamma button 5 on/offmrsmiley381 wrote:Tell me the secret of those dip switches. Really like how you handled the four-player connector, too.

Thanks. Those pcbs for joypads (sat decoders) and jamma connector were designed by me and I got a small batch produced for this and other projects. About joypad connectors - broken saturns.Stan wrote:Looks great!

This power supply was recommended by somebody in this thread (first pages iirc) and I found it on German ebay. It's pretty sweet (especially for naomi), it has 3.3V at 16A, 5V at 14A and 12V at 1.5A. No -5V, but you can always use "negatron" or something similar.
