Shmups & Cool stories...

Post by ST Dragon »

What Shmups have cool, deep & dramatic stories, videos & cutscenes?
The only ones I can think of are:

Gaiares - By the way, aren't the guys that made this, the same people that made Valis? The art in the cut scenes looks very similar...
Ikaruga
Silpheed - The Lost Planet
Radiant Silvergun
Thunder Force V

Also is there a shmup where you don't simply go against all odds & fight against infinite enemy waves, just simply because you're using a technologically superior craft?
One where you're the bad guy & everything is on your side for a change?

Yep, Telenet (Renovation in the U.S.) released both Gaiares and Valis.

Don't forget Zero Wing's story!

You need a actionpacked thrilling story ?

Are you kidding man !

Remember: You are the only hope for mankind. The enemy spends billions over billions of credits to build a devastating armada to develop a corrupt regime.

The aramda exists of thousands of bulletspreading fighting crafts and heavy tanks.

You even cannot imagine how much money those bosses will cost.
All of them a rare unique models with extrem powerful weapons.

All have the ability to destroy Megacitys !

Our funds are near NILL !
So the only thing we can offer you are 3 ships equipped with a standard laser.

You have to rely on your reflexes and your perfect eye to hand coordination.
Make use of every POWERUP or SMARTBOMB you can find on your way to the final boss.

KID this is no virtual simulation this is a REAL MISSION !

So get your stuff ready... 3 ...2 ...1 GO !

And may the spirit of the legendary CLOVER TAC be with you.

:D

Greetings
RFK

They're not exactly "cool, deep, and dramatic," but the Saturn mode of Game Tengoku has (rather lengthy) story segments between each stage...pity I have no idea what's being said most of the time, heh.

Ikaruga's story was more pronounced in the original Dreamcast Import.
Subtitles before the game and each stage...some proverb/moaning from the tragic hero.

The Original Silpheed also had Cinematics and dialouge between pilots.
although not quite to the extent of the sequel.

Gleylancer also had cutscenes and cinematics...but the story hasn't been fully translated and usually comes across as contrived at best.

The NES Dragon Spirit has cutscenes and an intro stage that aren't in the TG-16 or arcade versions.

Elemental Master has a cool story (and great cinemas too).

Phelios has a story too...although it's not much more than "save the prettty girl."

Shikigami No Shiro 2 on the DC has some(in shmups parlance anyways), rather lengthy bouts of banter between your character and the bosses you're about to vanquish.

Christ knows what they're saying though! :?

Just about everything on the PC-Engine/Duo. Anime style cut scenes were "in style" back then BIG-TIME.

Steam Hearts had a story...
more or less a depraved means to an end, but a story nonetheless.

 Einhander has some of the best cut scenes I've seen. Not to mention it's story, which is actually good.

I also enjoyed the cut scenes in Layer Section 2. They're damn good for it being on the Saturn.
