My girlfriend just blew up my Wii :SOLVED:

US Wii, plugged it into a standard travel adaptor in the UK to put on for her friends and called me to tell me it vented lots of gas and won't turn on any more.

I know it's fried, I don't know the extent.

What I want to know is what's salvageable? I had Wii Points stored on there and downloaded content - will it be retrievable on a replacement console?

Any help is much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about that gut-wrenching news of your imported USA Wii console. Guess it would time to get another one and your gf should foot the bill for causing such damage. Yep, import gaming console rated at 120v A/C won't do well with the usual European 240v A/C lines (unless you've got a good solid step-down convertor to do so).

Sometimes, all it takes is a very expensive import console to go up in smoke and one learns the hard way. Shit happens from time to time. It would akin to accidentally plugging in a Jamma loom the wrong way on a valuable Ketsui PCB and frying it. The horror and stupidity of it all...

Best to get another plug for things like this. You really should have a backup to begin with, in case of fraying.

Wish I had a US Wii.

Yeah, I know this sucks. I've never blown up one of my consoles, but then I know what I'm doing. Could have been worse though (Wondermega!)

Does anyone have any idea if the downloaded content, including the wii points saved on the console, are retrievable?

And longshot: is there no power failsafe which is replaceable in the machine?

I notice that bar the two prong/three prong power connector, all Wii's have the same grey power supply box. If I use my friends UK wii three prong plug socket to test the machine to see if the fuse in the adaptor has gone rather than the machine itself, will that work?

I suppose it's simpler just to say, if I used a UK dedicated Wii power supply on a US/JAP console, would it run ok?

i did this once with a DC

smoke billowing out of all the control and AV ports, and the room stank of burning plastic. and the tough fucker still works

that does work on 360's i believe. check the voltages first though

It should, provided you have a replacement. You should call Customer Service/send an email.

they're generally pretty good with repairs on consoles not under warranty

But are they good with consoles not from the UK?!

Sony certainly wouldn't even talk to me.

Does anyone know if a Japanese Gamecube power supply will work with a Wii. Could test it right now.

Otherwise it's the fuse on the motherboard that'll need replacing.

I'm using an aftermarket all voltage adapter on a US wii, it works fine, but it puts a lot of noise into the s-video signal. Dealextreme has them cheap.

I did a similar thing to an Atari Jag -I had a set of Christmas tree lights with what looked like an Atari logo on the power supply and I plugged it into my jag, switched it on and - *muffled bang* and the acrid smell of a console being fried...

Both my Supergun and SNES blew up recently. The Gun just sparked for no reason, but with the SNES I was guilty

- plugged it in without the step down transformer.

If its any use, I gave them to Fire-Bug to fix. PM him on NeoEmp.

Yeah, Starkey's got an MVS one-slot of mine he's taking a look at now. If it comes to it, I'll contact him to see if he knows anything about the newer stuffs too.

According to the folks on KC there's a 60 percent chance it's just the PSU that's blown, as they're meant to soak up the overload prior to reaching to console. Hence, it may just be the PSU that needs replacing. As any Wii PSU will work with any region Wii, I'll be testing it with a UK supply shortly.
Fingers crossed. There's still a good chance the fuse on the motherboard has blown.

The Wii is all good guys, scare over. It appears it's just the PSU that's blown, as it's all running a-ok on the UK power supply I borrowed this morning. Phew!
The girlfriend learned a valuable lesson though, it won't happen again. It could've been the Wondermega or something - she would've cooked that good!

I won't try to replace the fuse in the PSU, not technical enough, so a £15 replacement should do the job.
