R-Type Delta/Final, worth it?

Post by DreamerNL »

While I'm waiting for Gradius V to arrive, I was playing some R-Type on my SNES and I was wondering if any others in the series were worth getting?

R-Type Delta or Final perhaps?

R-type Final is a great game, but Gradius V is better.

Gradius V > R-Type Final

R-Type Delta > R-Type Final

R-Type Delta VS Gradius V. Debatable.

Try Delta first. It's more fun, tough, and arguably the best R-Type. Get Final if you're a big R-Type fan or need some time to waste unlocking ships.

I'm not a huge fan of the R Type series, but I think Delta is the best one aside from Leo.

If you liked the R-Types for the SNES, then get them both. There both great, and you'll love 'em. If had to choose one over the other, I'd probably go with Delta. It's the best R-Type, IMO. R-Type III: 3rd Lightning comes 2nd for me. Then of course Final, which seemed a little rushed to me, but still worth the money nonetheless. Good luck finding a complete, good conditioned copy of Delta though. It's becoming more expensive by the hour.

R-type Final doesn't get much respect around here but it's fantastic if you ask me. The gameplay isn't the best in the series, but it more than makes up for it with tons of atmosphere and mood, not to mention something like 100 unlockable ships. Just reading all the information and history behind the development of the ships is worth the price of admission.

if you don't have R-Type III for your SNES, i suggest you get it now, it's excellent.

R-Type Delta is probably the series' crowning achievement. some of the best level design of any shooter made.

R-Type Final is better than people give it credit for...if it's played on Bydo difficulty or higher. the 100+ ships and unlockables give it quite a bit of replay value as well. plus, who can forget the soft porn in the final level?

I'd say get Final. I much prefer it over Delta and not just because it doesn't make your eyes bleed after two stages, it's just an all round more accomplished package. It's quite different to Gradius V so I wouldn't compare them but I know which I prefer  .

Enjoy any choice you make though, as there all great games that shouldn't be missed out on.

I love both games... I still haven't finished Delta though. Get both of them, you can't go wrong.

I love delta. it's just such a pain in the ass because it's so hard and it never gives you any extends. But it's really a top notch game, I'd wholly recommend it.

Never played final, but it gets a lot of mixed reviews on here so I'm skeptical.

RTF is okay, flawed in many ways when you look at it, but you should still get it at the low price it is. fun to try and 1CC once, you probably wont come back to it once you do, tho, at least if you have some other shmups to play.

someone mentionned the highest difficulty, well i played plenty of r-typer, and i must say the first 4 stages are very easy on that, almost boring.
and then you get to the 4th boss, who is completely ****in random and depends on your luck, really stupid hard. unless you use one of the overpowered ships, then he's a joke. its for this boss alone i dont play much final now that ive 1CCed human, it bores me to play with the overpowered ships, but its pretty insane without them, not insane as in very hard, but impossible unless you're very lucky.

now that i talk about it, it makes me feel like playing it again lol. i should try to 1CC r-typer with one of the broken ships.
the fact that its the only hori i own probably helps, i dont think i would play it if i had something else.

i wonder why they were lazy programming this, get rid of the slowdown and the game would be 50% better, then get rid of the retarded requirements to unlock the ships and it would be 50% more.
yes, i unlocked them all, and it was a chore, not to mention i didnt get the PAL invincibillity code until like the last 3 ships. what were they thinking?
i guess unlocking shit is just modern gamer's bliss, personally i find it stupid.

While Final is by no means the best of the series imo, it`s still an R-TYPE.

No more explaination should be needed.

In my personal ranking Dalta is on par with R-Type 1, which is still unsurpassed in playability. If you have to choose, get Delta.

RTF is okay, I just think the effort put into the game is disproportionate to the quality of gameplay. They put way, way too much thought into all of those irrelevant unlockable ships and the overall graphic presentation, and not enough into level design. Kinda like serving a McDonalds cheeseburger on fine china. Still, the pokemon er...ships are pretty rad...some nice 3D modeling going on there.

R-Type Delta is far superior to Final.

1) Better level design
2) Better audio (hugely)
3) Better graphics (!!!!) - Final has astonishing slowdown

Final does feel like an R-Type game, but I found it a chore to play, the more I played it, the less I liked it, especially the third level were the game literally splutters and chugs at 5 frames per second in places. Some enemies (example - the crab in level 1) are simply boring to fight and take far too long to kill.

If you run Delta on a PS2, switch on the polygon shading in the PSX driver options (turn on without disc, triangle button) - it's one game that hugely benefits from the option.

In my opinion R-Type Delta is better than Final and Gradius V. Gradius V (even though I'm not particularly a fan of gradius series, I still like it more than Final)

R-Type Final is a unbalanced mix, some of the levels are boring/and have horrible framerate, but it has a few awesome moments too. R-Type Final would have been many times better if they had removed a couple of the levels and fixed the framerate issues. R-Type Final has an amazing amount of content, but it seems they put too much time putting in stuff than actually fixing the technical issues.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong I really do like R-Type Final, it is just that with just a few minor fixes the game could have easily been one of the bestest evar! :P

Well visuatrox, ur opinion is wrong. R-Type Delta can't even scratch the surface of Gradius V, in fact Gradius V is the best horizontal shooter ever made. It's the Radiant Silvergun for PS2 but better.

Nuff said.
