Reccommend some decent drum & bass

Post by Skykid »

Need something new to listen to - the nastier the better.

Any recommendations?

I don't generally like drum'n'bass, but there's one CD I like a lot: Dryft — Cell (2000). It's not pure d'n'b; it's called "industrial d'n'b" I believe. Adds some depth and abrasiveness to the sound. Example here.

If you want something really nasty, though, you're better off with breakcore.

Also, Permutation has like 2-3 d'n'b tracks, and even then they're really deviating from the canon.

Technical Itch, can't get any more brutal than that.

Gotta respect the classics:

Goldie - Timeless

This is 100% my favourite album of all time. Amazing amazing stuff, from the 23 minute title track, to the rhythmic intricacies of "sea of tears", great melodies on "Angel" and "state of mind"... Ahhhhhhhhh can 't get enough of it. Even though this came out 13 years ago, I still feel like no one has even come close to this album in terms of percussive complexity. It was way ahead of its time. ESSENTIAL LISTENING

As of lately, I've been listening to

Pendulum - Hold your color.
This has got some interesting poppy kind of songs, really good combination of d&b and actual music

And of course anything mixed by Grooverider or DJ Hype is bound to be good. DJ Hype does some pretty good scratching too :)

I love Timeless, too.

I really favour the oldschool type of D´n`B, like all this Reinforced and Metalheadz stuff from the early 90ies. I had an AWESOME record named Internal Affairs - I bought it when I was maybe 14 or 15, Jungle/D´n´B was the first type of music I purchased regularly.

That was one of the four tracks:

And I LOVE these Tom and Jerry-tunes 8)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OULQssed ... re=related

I also really love to listen to that Kemistry & Storm Mix CD that came with "Enforcers Above The Law".

Getting into breakcore with those other suggestions it looks like. I ripped my username from a Venetian Snares song, you might try some of his stuff if you want the real harder side, although these days I think breakcore as a whole is getting a little too noodly, I don't like the insane drum editing as much as I like hard fast hits.

Some awesome breakcore from last year: rotator - choose your poison, mine is hardcore (tons of metal and ragga influenced sounds, sometimes at the same time)

I'm not sure if breakcore is as nasty as I want to go - I do like Tech itch a lot though, Killabites 2 was an awesome mix.
Venitian Snares is ill, but after Rupert H was going all sick on it, I decided it strayed a little too into industrial territory from the D&B I liked :D

(I don't suppose anyone has 'Polymorphic' as mixed by Dom and Roland from Killabites 1 do they - can't find that track anywhere.)

Thanks for all the suggestions, and to szycag for that PM - awesome!

I was looking for something to buy recently D&B wise - some of my fave stuff is the aforementioned Tech Itch and The Four Elements album (Renegade Hardware).
Any suggestions along those lines is good!

I've seen shitmat a few times live now, and to be honest, unless you're fucked on something, he's not that exciting. Very very generic. And rather too white to justify his constant 'oh my gosh'-ing. I'd love to find some absolutely nasty breakcore, something like Venetian Snares live (the studio stuff is pretty tame) or DJ 100000000 at his nastiest.

Shitmat's live sets are obnoxious, no consistency at all. On record, it seems like half the time he's taking the piss of himself and the other he's trying to actually make something hard and fast. One of his first 7 inches, Shopliftin Gabba, is still one of the best things he's ever done.

If you like the jungle/metal hybrid style: Bong-ra, who I got to see live, had a pretty awesome set. His latest LP's called "full metal racket"... There's also Aaron Spectre's "Drumcorps" project, just one short LP of that so far http://www.drumcorps.cc/ At the moment that has a four track mp3 mix on it, pretty nice.

Venetian Snares albums break down into about four categories:

Dark Hardcore (fucked up): Doll Doll Doll, Find Candace, Making Orange Things, printf (Shiver in eternal Darkness), Meathole
Ravey Hardcore/Gabber: Higgins Ultra Low Track..., Happy Hardcore Pompoms, Winnipeg is a Frozen Shithole, Chocolate Wheelchair
Classical/Symphonic +breaks: Rossz Csillag..., My Downfall
Weirdish circuit bending/melodic stuff: Horse and Goat, Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding, Songs About My Cats

...and I don't think that's even half of the stuff he's put out, most people will hear one album and hate it then be totally floored by something else he does, he's just all over the place. I find it hard to recommend stuff by him. If I could pick any track to recommend though it would probably be "Make Ronnie Rocket"

A friend of mine makes ragga jungle under the name "Murderbot", his track "My Streets" is really good... lately he's been doing dubstep and juke/club stuff though.

Haha, ok, here you are. :D
Recorded at Abracadabra'07 on the equipment mentioned above. It wasn't very "live", though, rather a non-stop mix of his studio stuff. Yes, there wasn't much bass (besides the fact that my mic is bad at it).

Ha, didn't even know about those. Well, obviously VSnares's own recordings are better than mine (duh). :)

Still doesn't beat being there, which I fortunately have experienced.

I think the majority of them at least are other people recording them, but some of them are seriously good quality. One of them, I think it's the Detroit one is such good quality that I actually feel guilty for being able to download it for free :o

Now that I've actually listened to that recording, it does seem to be a bootleg as well. Mine lacks bass, and the one on the site is muffled and has ugly compression artifacts on highs.

I love his style of constant drum rolls over slowly unfolding horns and shit in the back, with guttural growl/grunt stabs every once in a while, totally unrelenting

This podcast is pretty good for the dark stuff. Its the Freakshow mixed by Dylan. He plays some pretty heavy shit.

Also another good radio show comes out of New Zealand. The Next Level hosted by State of Mind. I am seriously addicted to this show. Love their tune selection

if you want some really nasty and evil breakcore, i'd recommend
Dev/Null. It's a guy who usually listened to grindcore stuff and didnt
find anything equally hard in electric music that he liked, so he made his own. it's an absolutely gorgeous audio overload.

another group i can recommend is the eraplee noisewall orchestra.
they are not soooo breakcore, but sound just like a kick in you face.

PM me please and i will provide further *cough* information. :D
