Adding power to a NeoGeo old-style joystick?

Post by iatneH »

I was all excited to mod my old-style stick, but I discovered that the pin assigned to +5V on the controller connector has nothing connected to it.

So, I just wanted to know the different options I have for supplying power. Most of you know the "socket" thing (which is more like a plug here) is rather long, so a typical female DB-15 from an electronics shop will not reach the connector pins when plugged into the console.

Am I limited to cannibalising a cord from a NGCD pad or new-style joystick? Or is there a place where I can buy longer DB-15 connectors? Or, in crazy desperation, use dry cell batteries?

The best way is also the cheapest but perhaps not the easiest one.
There is a superfluous wire (light green) in the old style stick on receptacle 9. This connects to the D button inside the stick but the only real wire for D is on receptacle 4. So if you extract the socket contact located at 9 and move it to 8 you can use it to bring power (+5v) inside the stick.

Here's a few pics that show how to open the backshell of the old style stick DB15 socket:

Once you've opened it I suggest to use a proper DSub extraction tool to remove the contact from receptacle 9 (light green wire). Other tools may not do the trick and might damage the contact and/or the plastic housing.

If you decide to just replace the cord, it doesn't necessarily have to be one from a neo controller: some DB15 extensions have a long socket housing that will fit the neo geo plugs but they're getting hard to find.

:!: That's a great idea.

I don't have the extraction tool but I will see if a local shop can get it out for me.

Thanks for the suggestion MKL.

I was unable to extract the pin, but I came up with another solution.

I bought some crimp-type D-sub pins, and just slipped one into position 8 with a short wire attached.

There is actually an unused wire in the NeoGeo cord, coloured light blue. I stripped away the end and connected it to the pin I just added. The two D button wires were left untouched.

So, from Jul.02, 2008 to Jan.27, 2009. I finally got off my ass to finish up this stick mod.

Big thanks go to Alien Soldier for the parts recommendation, and MKL for power suggestions.

3mm LEDs in each button, though a strange thing is that each LED must have a different voltage rating, since I had to use different resistors for each one.

You don't need to add the +5 volt to the old style stick. It does not need it, the only thing that would need it are the new style neo pads and kidney bean shaped sticks.

the neo itself has no use for it.

did you need it for the lights?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yes, precisely. Then again I don't really need it, since LED mods to video game controllers are frivolity added to an already extravagant hobby...
Luckily it wasn't extraordinarily difficult, and I have most of my other living necessities under control for the time being...

I am very curious what purpose the IC inside the NGCD pads and kidney bean joysticks serves though, since the controller protocol ought to be uncompressed? Could it possibly be some kind of bilateral switch, assuming that not enough current can pass through the button, so an amplified signal is sent instead whenever a weak signal is detected through the button?
