Keep reachin' for that rainbow!
Let's see how long this one takes to fly off the handle.
Okay to be gay in California (same sex marriage)

There's a name for this: argumentum ad antiquitatem.some bible-thumping dinosaur wrote:"So-called 'same-sex' marriage is counterfeit marriage. Marriage is, and has always been, between a man and a woman."
One brings financial gain and the other brings afterlife gain.t0yrobo wrote:It's good to see that some people have the sense to realize that legal marriage and religious marriage are two separate things.
I think they are quite alike indeed.
Both have no other purpose then to bring gain.
All errors are intentional but mistakes could have been made.

Hehe, ofcourse not.GaijinPunch wrote:Yes, summed up perfectly. That is the ONLY reason people get married.Michaelm wrote: Both have no other purpose then to bring gain.
The main reason is that its considered a normal thing to do.
Sorta like the one sheep over the bridge story.
And then everyone wants to throw the best party.
Anyway I see no difference in people just living together or being married.
Getting married does NOT bring anything special to those that choose to live together other then the financial gain or the religious gain or being a status symbol.
All errors are intentional but mistakes could have been made.

I could say any number of witty things right now but it far too easy. But yeah that would be a mine field. theres only one thing worse than a gay divorce and thats a Gay womens divorce. . . two wordsThinimus wrote:I don't find gay marriage to be a problem, but can you imagine the horror that would be gay divorce?

gay divorce will be mostly just "eh, whatever" while lesbian divorces will be a nuclear blast in magnitudeThinimus wrote:I don't find gay marriage to be a problem, but can you imagine the horror that would be gay divorce?

...yeah, sounds like very few people here actually know any gay guys
domestic partnerships for hetero couples who live together are only available if one of you is very old, IIRC
"if we live together for long enough the state will consider us common-law married" is a myth too
or did you mean some other type of difference?
wait whatGaijinPunch wrote:Nor does the US government.Anyway I see no difference in people just living together or being married.

But then that depends on how butch one of them may be. I'd be curious about the numbers on that, as far as how many lesbian couples have clear roles where one partner is more "manly" than the other. As the same data would be interesting for gay male couples, too.

You is recalling wrong. Share a house and checkbooks with your opposite sex partner. When you break up, get a lawyer. But of course, this depends on where in the states you live. Some states (Texas, for example) don't even have alimony for people that are married under 20 years. Obviously any penalties from a common law arrangement wouldn't be very severe.domestic partnerships for hetero couples who live together are only available if one of you is very old, IIRC
Other places, like California, and even before this, you might be legally bound to offer some type of support to a same-sex partner in a similar situation. That's the beauty of the US legal system. It can be bent in many ways.

If you ask me government ought to stop "marrying" people and stick exclusively to civil unions, or whatever one cares to call them - if people want to marry, they can go to any church they please which will take them. They want legal status as partners, they should get a civil union.t0yrobo wrote:It's good to see that some people have the sense to realize that legal marriage and religious marriage are two separate things.
This bit of failure of separation of church and state that we have now tends to greatly and unnecessarily complicate things.
That's my thinking on the issue. No marriage for homo or hetero couples, just civil unions for both.BulletMagnet wrote:If you ask me government ought to stop "marrying" people and stick exclusively to civil unions, or whatever one cares to call them - if people want to marry, they can go to any church they please which will take them.
