Your favorite non-shmup & non-fighting arcade game.

Post by nimitz »

"The above title says it all" 8)

What is your favorite (AS IN ONLY 1) Arcade game that is NOT a shmup NOR a fighting game.

also crossovers like Outzone or Robotron 2084 are considered shmups for this little survey. So none of these.

So, what's yours?

Puzzle Bobble series
Yie Ar Kung Fu
Shaolin Road

There's likely more, but it's a spur of the moment list.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Rainbow Isl,

erm no wait,

Bubble B,

erm let's see,

Cleopatra Fortune (yeah that's it).

Still the "only 1" rule is VERY cruel, so many things to be left out. :(

Cannon Dancer? D&D2? Hard to choose from such widely disparate games...

Metal Slug. If that doesn't count, then Shinobi, with Rastan as the runner up. Actually, those are pretty much my top 3 games period.

All of the above (Cannon Dancer is nice), plus

Contra (arcade)
Super Contra (arcade)
Shadow Dancer (Mega Drive)
Shinobi III
GG Shinobi II

Too many to list, really.

I loved both the GG Shinobi games, the final levels alone make both worth playing.

Not my #1 favorite, just what came to mind.

Super Contra (arcade) is a much better game.

Of course, there are other, better-designed Contra titles than even that, but I like it in the balance.

Edit:

[18:25] <Edoscuro> <- likes contra arcade for non scoring play
[18:25] <Edoscuro> well, I do have a "high score" for the game
[18:25] <Edoscuro> if I were to try for a milk-the-game-dry highscore it would become unfun in a hurry
[18:25] <Edoscuro> you can probably just hide in a pool of water and wait for the odd enemy to drop by
[18:25] <Edoscuro> pop him, duck back in the water where you're safe from the idle protection.

Hey, you said NO shooting and fighting games (even borderliners).
That and I could only pick 1.

This was the first that sprang to mind.
And what a fantastic game it is. :)

I haven't played many arcade games (to be honest, I'm quite picky, so I don't know what to play), but the ones I've enjoyed most so far are Metal Slug 3 and Cameltry.

Hmm...does the game have to be arcade-exclusive, or can it have gotten a port at some point?

If it's not a shooter or fighter, it'd probably be a puzzler...probably Magical Drop 3 if "ported" games count, and Ghostlop if you're talking exclusives (though I'm not sure that one was ever even released...I'd love to see it on SNK Classics 2, assuming they make it).

AES MVS are pretty much the same thing though. I think games that have been ported are fair play to post. Alough its not my post to say so . . .

Magical drop 3 is a fucking beast of a game. I really want to pick up another copy if i can

This has been an old SNES fav for years & has a great review from flying omelette:

http://www.flyingomelette.com/reviews/snes/equinox.html

Simple play, great music, great to look at, tons of atmosphere, not a word of dialog.

Equinox aka: Solstice II

It largely depend on my mood but Wardner is solid, as is Shinobi.
