The -What have you been playing on your PSP lately?- Thread

Post by themachinist »

As for me, I've been glued to Wipeout Pulse. It has cool music, high speeds, and cool weapon system. The Zone mode especially is an experience. Probably my favorite racing 'franchise'. The grid system in Pulse (opposed to the system in Pure) is repetitive but I have this inexplicable urge to get all the golds possible (on medium difficulty), and I'm almost there! Just have the last two phantom grids to go.

Here is a screenshot I took in-game during Zone:

Way too much of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (more than 250 hours now since I got it.) Aside from a brief and disastrous foray into Crisis Core, that's pretty much all I've had in my PSP for the last couple of months.

Ah, I picked up Disgaea right after I finished FFT:WOTL because I was hankering for some more SRPG action. I was too used to FFT though and Disgaea's interface was a little wierd so I quit after the battle tutorial and put it aside. I'll give it another shot later though... . Maybe after wipeout.

Oddly enough, I continue to be fascinated and vexed by Every Extend Extra. It truly compels me to come back to it, and it hasn't left my PSP in months.

It *would*, if I could find someone locally to help me get some custom FW installed on my PSP, but nobody seems interested in helping out a fellow Detroit-area PSP guy.

Hint hint. ;)

I'm playing Pulse too. Swell game. Only bad thing is the lack of tracks. 12 doesn't cut it at all. It needed at least another 2 and no I'm not paying for no stinking downloadable content. They're too expensive and should've been part of the game to begin with. Here's hoping the rumored ps2 port is true and they'll throw those in.

Previously played God Of War Chains of Olympus, the konami shmup packs, Crisis Core, and Castlevania.

I haven't played recently but for me it is usually Shock Troopers on MVSPSP, Progear on CPS2PSP, and Mr.Driller G for PS1.

I hard-modded my battery a while ago and then changed it back to a normal battery when I was done. But I read somewhere that once you are running CFW that you can make Pandora batteries using it? Not sure how that works but I might be able to do it for people now.

Loading the firmware was super easy, as jonny5 said, just pressing a button twice. The hardest part about modding the battery was just getting the damn thing open.

I just recently got mine, so I've been playing a lot of Star Soldier. I'm also new to rRootage and NOIZ2SA, so they've been getting some attention from me as well.

Do it yourself. It seems like a lot to do, but it really isn't that hard. Here's a step-by-step guide, and if you don't want to make your own pandora batter (although, in this tutorial, it is reversible), you can buy the Datel one which is like $25+ (just google it).

It's well worth your time. The emulation is what made me buy my PSP. It has some great games on it for sure, but being able to emulate everything from MSX up to CPS2 just makes it a portable beast. I only wish it had better MAME support, but it doesn't look like that'll ever happen.

Rondo of Blood. It's really good. Contains the remake, original and SotN (with Maria).

Just over a week ago I finally broke down and bought a PSP, after months of holding off...that weekend Gamestop was having a "buy 2 used games, get 1 free" sale, so off to the races I went...I bought nearly every game on the system that I'd been hoping to play within those couple of days (my wallet still aches). I'm still looking for the Konami packs and LocoRoco, and maybe one or two others, but otherwise I've just been sampling the stuff I've got. A handful of remakes/ports (Disgaea, Power Stone, Castlevania, Valkyrie Profile, etc.), some strategy/RPG stuff (Aedis Eclipse, Jeanne D'Arc, Wild Arms XF, etc.) and a handful of others (Gitaroo Man, Every Extend Extra, Patapon, etc.)...Castlevania's probably gotten the most overall play time so far (was eager to unlock the PCE original and SotN), but I just picked up R-Type Command the other day and have yet to try it, so who knows what might take over the system next...

I rather like the system so far (which is something of an accomplishment, since I tend to avoid portables...though part of the reason I went for this over a DS is the ability to play it on a TV), though I have a handful of gripes about it as well. Just gonna hafta wait and see what else comes out on it (I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the remake of Yggdra Union to make it stateside).

Pulse and Pure for me. I finall managed to beat a really annoying track in Flash and Rapier that kept me from progressing in Pure for six months.

Done with Drac X Chronicles. Still trying to 1CC Einhander (via Popstation). Legend Of Dragoon and Klonoa crash in the middle so still not done with them... let's see... R-Type Delta is done, Final Fantasy 8 Speed run done. Silent Bomber also mysteriously crashes where it didn't before.

Still play a bit of Lumines while on the bus, now and then.

(Anybody wanna get together online for some Pulse goodness?)

FFT and Sengoku Cannon. The former needs no introduction. I find that it's somewhat difficult to hit all 3 buttons that you need in the latter though. With the thumb, you'll lose reaction time hitting either the bomb or cannon depending on button placement. With other fingers, the buttons are too close together and you don't have a good grip on the PSP (and the resulting glare is killer).

On an aside, I never realized how fast the PSP battery loses charge though. I've left my DS for months and it still kept charge (not even 25%) but my PSP has lost its date/time settings before after leaving it for months and loses its full charge very quickly whether played or not (WLAN turned off).

Seriously, Salamander Portable. Managed to score the Asia version for ~$16 from P-A and I haven't been able to stop playing Xexex since.

Before that it was Valkyrie Profile, since I never got a chance at the original.

According to a poster on the Atlus forums, the remake of Yggdra Union has "Special Thanks to Atlus USA" in the credits...so it seems kinda likely!

Loco Roco was totally not worth it—saccharine and cloying to the point of nausea. You might be able to tolerate it better than me (I can't stand Twinbee for the same reason) ...but either way, you should definitely look into Patapon.

I'd be down for some Wipeout Pulse online, never having tried it before. Playing against some humans for once would be fun  .

Locoroco: Personally I hated that game. Total waste of $ if you ask me.

Patapon though I enjoyed. Prob takesl ike 12-15 hrs tops to beat but it kept me entertained for like 20.

I don't play any shomups on my PSP because the Phatty's D-Pad just sucks and I don't like the analogue nublet. Gradius Collection sits on my shelf.

I am using the old model PSP (sorry, "phat" is a pet peeve of mine), and I am using a set of stick-on D-pad covers from play-asia, might have been yesasia, and it works fine for me. I tried the D-pad mod but I wasn't happy with it.

props to both of you for making the forum easier on the eyes with asian babes.

After Xexex and DXC, my PSP is getting some dust.

But this will change soon once I grab Space Invaders Extreme and Sapphire.

For Ganelon,

I just use a bigger Sony Stamina 2200 mAh PSP-280u battery pack. It holds a bit more juice than the standard 1800 mAh rated PSP battery pack that came with the original PSP hardware setup. Most American retailers have discountined carrying it nowdays but you might want to try your local Toys-R-Us as they're bound to have one or two left.

Do this. It's the first thing I did next to getting for my PSP. $6.50 shipped from NCSX. In addition to the better feel of the d-pad, the analogues are actually pretty good compared to the stock one too. You could do the D-pad mod yourself, but you'll probably end up with dust in your system for the rest of its life.

Even with the stick on d-pad, I wouldn't venture to play fighters comfortably, but playing shooters is a hundred times better.

I tried various things like getting a dpad cover from somewhere in Hong Kong, but nothing worked and eventually I decided just to upgrade to the newer model PSP. I still don't use it much for shmups because I've decided that shmups are usually too frustrating for me on handhelds, but the dpad works sooo much better on the new PSP.

I only got my PSP back in January, so I'm far from an early adopter. Disgaea was the game that convinced me to get one (I'd heard a lot about it in its PS2 incarnation, but missed the chance to grab a copy before it hit $100 on eBay.) I promptly got sucked in, and it's rapidly approaching the point of being the non-MMOG game that I've spent the most time playing.

As for Crisis Core, I don't think it's anything wrong with the game so much as it just not being the type of game I'm interested in. Too many unskippable cutscenes, characters I can't stand, Characters who I might be able to stand but who will probably get killed off in the first hour of the game, a battle system that takes a rocket scientist to figure out, and the inability to figure out what's going on without having previously sat through 50 hours of previous FFVII stuff before playing it. I got about 45 minutes in, turned it off, deleted my save file and haven't touched it since.
