POLL: PS2 Metal Gear Solids are actually a bit rubbish?
POLL: PS2 Metal Gear Solids are actually a bit rubbish?
With MGS4 landing next month, I'd just like this to go to a vote, I'm curious who thinks these really are great games?
Personally I think they both stink a bit for a number of reasons, and are no way near as good as they should be.
Remember, it's the PS2 version only you're voting for - not the MSX or PSX games, which were a bit special.

I had lots of fun with both of them. Dressing aside, you can really see the quality of the core game in the drama-free VR Missions and Snake vs. Monkey modes. The fact that the game mechanics stand up to the old old-school style of replaying and refining your score is a big point in their favor. But it's OK if you don't like them.

Yeah, the VR missions are cool.. I would like the games a lot more if they would limit the interruptions to once every 10 minutes or so at a minimum. As it stands, I just don't feel like I'm getting any gameplay in. 3 is definitely better in this regard, but since Kojima is regarded as a master storyteller, you'd think he could figure out a way to tell the story as effectively without all the nonsense.

We here shall not rest until we have made a drawing-room of your shaft, and if you do not all finally go down to your doom in patent-leather shoes, then you shall not go at all.
I'm actually getting the Essential Collection soon so I'll know when I try them. MGS on the PSX was really good, though. As weird as it is to say, the gameplay itself wasn't anything special, although it was solid; the best part was the way the story was told. The cinematography, as it were. I enjoyed the cutscenes almost more than the actual gameplay. This is saying something since I'm usually all about gameplay over story or graphics or whatever.

Not enough choices in the poll = sucks.
MGS2 was a great 'game'. Say all you'd like about the plot/story(even though it never bothered me), it was a technically superb game and that is all that really matters. Shit, if story counted so much I think plenty of shooters wouldn't make the cut. Also, see '9 minutes of Magic'.
MGS3 initially missed the mark, but built on many improvements from MGS2 although it was a far different game. I have yet to try the Subsistence improved camera, although I would still say it's a good game anyway.
I've worked on these games extensively and would be interested to discuss any flaws outside the plot/story anywhere, anytime.

How about stupidly long cutscenes and constant interruption of gameplay?Limbrooke wrote:I've worked on these games extensively and would be interested to discuss any flaws outside the plot/story anywhere, anytime.
I like them except for those two "problems."

I think every single MGS game past MGS 1 is complete and utter trash. They are essentially Splinter Cell games without the gameplay and with tons of cutscenes added that relate a disjointed utterly nonsensical story that fans explain away by exclaiming "LOL it's japanese!"
Well Treasure does the same weirdness with their games and they are actually fun to play.

JoshF for the refreshment*JoshF wrote:That's hard to do when the plots are just an amalgam of plot pieces from brain dead action movies, for the most part.
I only watched MGS2 being played on the Xbox, so no vote from me.
I do have a copy of MGS3 though.
*Perhaps "win" works better there after all.
Good thing 95% of them can be skipped(for MGS2 anyway). Same for codec transmissions: triangle is your friend. The one that really bothers me is the end credits... no skip, that has to be my biggest gripe. The end credits is the longest of them all and cannot be skipped.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:How about stupidly long cutscenes and constant interruption of gameplay?

Stupidly long... again, if you skip them they seem to fly by. It's no Xenosaga, what a bore that series is.
Phew, I needed a laugh today. Thanks! The n00b wrote:They are essentially Splinter Cell games without the gameplay...

Wells, you know, you miss on the story when you skip the cinemas. They seem to have a problem with keeping them to the point, which is my gripe.Limbrooke wrote:Good thing 95% of them can be skipped(for MGS2 anyway). I like the story, but the gameplay mechanics have gone worse on every new installment. In the first MGS, you could really tell your main objective was stealth through all the places, but now it's just a mini "Dynasty Warriors" gameplay added with "Matrix" effects.. Don't think I'll ever give MGS4 a chance unless I happen to buy a PS3, which I also doubt I would.
I don't even think Kojima is the person he used to be.. Give me new Snatcher or translate Policenauts and I'd be happier with 100 new Metal Gears.

Oh, I get it, you were trying to watch a movie but accidentally picked up a game instead.Give me new Snatcher or translate Policenauts and I'd be happier with 100 new Metal Gears

How can something be a bit rubbish? Sounds like "a bit empty", or "a bit pregnant"...Skykid wrote:PS2 Metal Gear Solids are actually a bit rubbish?
On topic: While I'm not a fan of the series, I can't but notice that the games sold in the millions. If people had thought they were bad, the games probably wouldn't have sold as good. I suppose that answers your question.
PS.
Don't you think there should be an option between
"I think they're masterpieces." and
"They're pretty average games, nothing special." ?
As such, the poll fails.
MGS on the ps1 was the first game i completed in my second age of gaming (im onto my third now) and i bought mgs2 the day it came out, completed that in a little over a week and despite all the problems (loooong cut scenes, dreary moralistic storyline, raidens hair etc) i did enjoy it.
when mgs3 came out i wasnt into my gaming much but i picked it up about a year later, i sat through the whole intro and early tutorials but a soon as the game properly started i got lost for about half an hour and then shot! ( i dont think i fully understood the hide mechanic!)
i havnt picked it up since.
i must say though one of my most memorable gaming moments is when i first played mgs2 and noticed when you are on the ship and you open one of the outer doors, the way your hair would be blown back by the wind.
that kind of attention to detail impressed me.

The Metal Gear Solid games are one of the few real example of a great game developer (Konami) being able to make the switch from older style 2d games to a fully 3d environment with 3d "gameplay" while keeping great mechanics and a fun, challenging game.
Sure theres A LOT of cutscene and the story itself (of all three games) isn't THAT GREAT. but I feel it adds nicely and isn't overly boring.
The MSG games are actually pretty much the only "mainstream" games I really enjoyed on the PS2.

Zanzibar hamsters for life, bro.
Getting the shit kicked out of him can make Snake tougher in the long run, though. Assuming you survive.
Virtuous Mission kicked my ass at first, too. This ain't Outer Heaven no more!MX7 wrote:I started playing MGS3 yesterday. It's quite tough, in a satisfying way, which I appreciate. Took me two and a half hours to reach the opening credits, lol. Having fun so far.
