On a lighter note, forum has become rather filled with religion so lets bring back off topic gaming.
With both these exclusives set to hit the shelves in the coming weeks is anyone else excited? I might just have to buy a PS3 soon, MGS4 is as good a reason as any.
How is GTA4 by the way? I haven't been able to find a copy in local stock for the last few days.

I've already got my Ninja Gaiden 2 paid for and I bought a 360 last week. I can't wait.

Indeed, the wait for MGS 4 has been long, Snake Eater is still amazing. Its awkward that Snakes so old looking now, I just hope the character doesn't degenerate physically throughout the game. Still no evidence of MGS4 going multi-platform so its forcing me to buy a PS3 come July. I did the whole locked door thing for 2 days when I bought God of War 2, I'll definetly do it with NG2

What's wrong with playing it on the old Commodore?!Turrican wrote:I'm looking forward to MGS4! Maybe I'll get a ps3 for it.

yeah.... I have been pretty much been waiting on these 2 this year exclusively. I have both reserved... NG2 hit 1st.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Never having played any MGS games (gasp), I picked up the MGS Essential collection for $30, good deal. I beat MGS1 a few weeks ago and am about 6 hrs into MGS2. Having a good time with it. The rumored MGS pS3 bundle would be perfect for anyone without a PS3 and wanting MGS4, since it includes PS3 (40 or 80 not sure), MGS4 and Dual Shock 3. I don't think I can fork over $500 though
.

Same here. I've been looking forward to Ninja Gaiden 2 since it was announced. I waited to buy a 360 until now because other than that theres nothing I'm really interested in. I am having fun playing Crackdown though.Ed Oscuro wrote:NG2 yes, MGS4 not all that much (lol realiztic war shootys)
I don't think I could care less about Metal Gear.

Crackdown is the shit!!!! I do hope they make another one soon, as much as I am enjoying GTAIV, I can't help but wish that I could pick up whatever car I flip over, jump to the next lane, put it down, and drive away at some ridiculous speed that sends all vehicles I hit flying 50 feet into the air.
All Crackdown needs are more missions, a star system for when you're in trouble with the law, and... some fights against other super-powered individuals.

Okay, "gritty realism" in graphics, then.Turrican wrote:realistic huh? You never played a Metal Gear, evidently.Ed Oscuro wrote:(lol realiztic war shootys)
Also, Kojima got some splainin' to do about Solid Snake getting the recessive genes. You see:
"Liquid you gots all the recessive genes" -> endgame -> "Oh Solid does"
Brown hair = dominant, blond = recessive

Get ready, it's about to go seriously downhill (and yes, even more downhill than when the boat section finished, which is by far and away the best part of the game.)I picked up the MGS Essential collection for $30, good deal. I beat MGS1 a few weeks ago and am about 6 hrs into MGS2. Having a good time with it.
I'm interested in MGS4, but I don't really know why. 2 & 3 stunk, I don't care what anyone says.
Hideo Kojima is not what he was in the snatcher days - he hasn't used modern technology very well. MGS1 (PS1) is still an awesome game, but by the PS2 the controls were fiddly and archaic (and frustrating), the graphics confusing and...red...and boring. His decisions are bewildering, literally (axe Snake for Raiden - wtf?!) and the storyline to MGS2 is utter, utter garbage. Totally pretentious, totally confusing wank that only a Japanese director with delusions of genius could do: doesn't have a clue about editing whatsoever (I bet half his crew were like "Ok Hideo, you have a thousand idea's for a storyline and plot twists here - lets start whittling them down to the best ones," No, says Hideo, "Let's try to put them all in, that'll really confuse people!".) Not quite the sense of judgement I would expect from a director held in such high regard.
Even Snake Eater was fucking painful. Working in a game store, we bought the game the night before release and took it home, all excited and that.
3 hours of cutscenes and about 30 minutes of unbearable realisation, it dawned on us that the the control scheme, still out of date since MGS1, had no overhaul at all - but the environment had become more technical. Not to be a pussy, we played the game on 'experienced in MGS' or whatever, only to find there's no FUCKING RADAR.
What the hell, it was a joke. Instead of being a stealthy killer super soldier, we're playing as this retard who seems to keep tripping up over his feet and then go running for the hills every two seconds. In fact, I remember it being farcical, and that we were actually in stitches at one point. It was like a really silly Monty Python sketch.
Although well directed, we were quickly bored stiff by all the cutscenes, and after 3 hours we looked at each other, and someone announced "...This is crap, isn't it?"
They hit the nail on the head really.
So yes, I'm interested in MGS4 - however I don't trust Hideo and his lack of editing skills not to conjure up some utterly bullshit plot-line that you hate because human beings aren't made to understand it. I also don't trust that the bloody PS3 control pad (see PS1 control pad) will be able to influence the game for the better, meaning we'll have more stunning visuals in which you play a frustrating, stilted game.
Hrmph, that's my opinion anyway, and you're all Hideo ass kissers if you think all of those points aren't valid.

lol, try looking before you go running off somewhere.- but the environment had become more technical. Not to be a pussy, we played the game on 'experienced in MGS' or whatever, only to find there's no FUCKING RADAR
Also, you watch the cutscenes? You can skip them with select or triangle or something.
Yes, now he can manage to fit a game in there with the cutscenes.Hideo Kojima is not what he was in the snatcher days

Sorry Zebra, no-one's winning this one with me. The game is hideously broken. Stealth should be replaced with 'stilted'. I'm perfectly aware that you can 'look', albeit from a shoddy 1st person perspective, that often happens to be from a laying flat position which then seriously limits depth perception, and hinders the ability to look into distances.Zebra Airforce wrote:lol, try looking before you go running off somewhere.- but the environment had become more technical. Stealth is a great premise for a game, and worked like magic in MGS1. But Hideo did himself an injustice with the sequels. They're really not much fun to play.
Oh so there's a GAME in there?! Jeez, I never realised.Yes, now he can manage to fit a game in there with the cutscenes.
I'm glad our faith in Hideo's storytelling abilities are aligned. Also, you watch the cutscenes? You can skip them with select or triangle or something.

A small man is far away, a big man is close up. How much more info do you need? You don't have to catch them with a lasso, you just need to know which direction they're facing.I'm perfectly aware that you can 'look', albeit from a shoddy 1st person perspective, that often happens to be from a laying flat position which then seriously limits depth perception, and hinders the ability to look into distances.

Look man, I don't think MGS2 or Snake Eater are very good games. They're flawed on several levels, and are frustrating, rather than a pleasure.
I liked Hideo's imagination with Snatcher, and just about everything actually up to and including MGS1. But the PS2 games are a let-down: Hideo is just too full of dodgy ideas and too full of hiimself.
MGS4 will struggle with that archaic control pad, but I hope that this time he listens to criticism, and the contributions of his team.
We want:
A massively simplified control system, that's 'fun' to use.
A much improved freedom of movement within the new look playground.
Keep the cutscenes, just cut them right down. All the waffle and nonsensical chat needs to go.
Hire someone else to write the story (please!). I have no problem with the unique, Japanese take on things, but I'd like a clear plot and a nice distinct ending that I understand.
Action! Give us some action! I want to be able to be stealthy, but also clear areas with heavy artillery in one fell swoop - at least some of the time.
And finally, some variety in the gameplay would be nice. Konami were always the company back in the 16bit era to really innovate conventional game design. I want the variety of action in Rocket Knight Adventures to appear in MGS4.
Thanks Hideo, ya bum.

Could you please explain what exactly is broken about it? All you said was that the cutscenes are too long (though apparently you liked them?), and that the game was "too technical". I'd be willing to bet, though, that you are a fan of Alien Soldier, a highly technical game with very complex controls that take a long time to come to grips with. What makes the fact that this game has complexity and depth a weakness as opposed to a strength?Look man, I don't think MGS2 or Snake Eater are very good games. They're flawed on several levels, and are frustrating, rather than a pleasure.
