I head so much about this I finally watched the whole thing. It was quite good. I was glued to the TV till I finished it. It lost some steam after L died and I could tell it was a case of "let's milk it for a bit longer" ect, but still it was a great ride.
The ending pissed me off though, I couldn't help but cheer for light/kira all the way through. I hated seeing that douche bag Near win. I mean come on if L couldn't take down Light then Near and mello could? Plus his second monion was way more competent than Misa... if he managed to survive Misa's foolishness....
That's just me wanting Light to pull it through and laugh in N's face I guess. I was hoping that when he died, users become death god's when they pass on. I could have easily seen Light just dropping the note book for a new user and keeping Kira going on forever by passing the torch.

I read through the manga the whole way through last week, after seeing the two Death Note movies on tv. I was cheering for L, and after he died I was rather pissed. It seemed to go downhill from there rather quickly and only picked up a bit at the end. I did like that I had no idea who would end up winning, Light or Near/Mello - though I didn't like any of the main characters in the second half. Still, it was an enjoyable read on power and the corruption that it can bring.
I still had to go with Light; war ended, organized crime stopped, ect.
Plus in my eyes, it's not like the worlds leaders/governments/corporations aren't just as treacherous as Light if not more so. At least light got results and if you lead a good life you had nothing to worry about. Well unless you were after him.
That and L wasn't exactly clean as far as his methods, kidnapping and tocher before proven guilty ect. But L was cool and if anyone was gonna kill Light it should have been him. I could see both their points of view really.

L dying added some twist to the story 'cause nobody expects the main character to die. I didn't like N too much, though. The movie has a better ending imo, and I liked the changes they made to the story.
Edit: Random trivia: there's a character called Kira in Bleach and he always makes it into the top ten most popular characters
