Tennis videogame lovers-

Post by Battlesmurf »

I've never purchased a Tennis game- what's good out there? I have most systems- but I'd prefer something Ps2, DC, XBOX/360, PS3- preferably a good, long lasting title.

Suggest me something :)

If you are truly interested in this you should know the answers you'll be getting... :?

But since you're asking...

You have a Dreamcast, well then get yourself a copy of Virtua Tennis 1 or/and 2 (2 featuring ladies). Both games can be bought NEW for cheap prices.

Since you also own xbox360, maybe you can consider Top Spin 1/2 or Virtua Tennis 3 as well. They should be more expensive than the dc games mentioned, but good quality if I have to believe reviews and random ppl I spoke to.

All of them seem like good choices though.

(btw, anyone remembers that old Ubisoft tennis game on the amiga? pro tennis tour or something like that. Played almost as well as virtua tennis and had great graphs for the time. The official game came with a souvenir tennis ball too iirc.')

I have an idea of the kind of replies I'm going to get- and I don't mind sifting through a few jokes and/or insults to get to the good stuff. There's not a whole lot of tennis games to go through, but I find that sometimes it's better to ask people that are interested and playing these rather than screwing with review sites and such- I'd like to think that I'm more likely to find someone with similar tastes here than on another forum.

Sega Superstars Tennis is surprisingly good! It built on the Virtua Tennis formula and is almost worth it for the House of the Dead zombie killing mode alone!!!

Cheapest option won't dissapoint you here: Virtua Tennis 1 or 2 (similar prices iirc) are fantastically fun and long lasting.

And I am no tennis freak at all, but still love them both. :)

Everything I know about tennis, I learned from Virtual Boy.

But you'd probably want its GameCube descendent.

if you like tennis, anything with sega's name on it is top notch.

If you want realistic and long-lasting fun, go for the virtua tennis series.

if you want a little crazy to go with your fanservice, go for Sega Superstars Tennis.

I play actual tennis every week, so I'm not sure I need a sim. What does anyone think about that Gamecube Mario tennis thing? That looked pretty cute. I waited so long for it to become a budget title that I forgot about the game.

I remember a cool PC Engine tennis game by Hudson where you could alter your attributes after winning matches.

Good call. I put in plenty of time on this one too, before moving onto the Camelot Mario Tennis for GBC.

Otherwise, Virtua Tennis 2 is probably the best tennis game I've played on a home console.

Just get the mentioned dreamcast tennis games instead. I can't put my finger on it, but Mario Tennis on the Gamecube was very poor to me, just not fun at all.

Really?
I would've expected it to be comparable to N64 Mario Tennis, which I very much enjoyed.
Did the character-specific special shots break the game, or what?

Virtua Tennis 3 rocks, and I could care less about real tennis. I would think twice before shelling out any money for Sega SuperStars Tennis-I haven't any review praising it; the reviews are actually quite mixed.

If you're going with the Dreamcast games, also check out the very similar Cosmic Smash.

NES Tennis. Primitive but gets the job done. I remember a 1984ish ping pong game by Konami on an MSX emulator that I liked. Honestly though, Virtua Tennis on DC is where its at though, considering how long a friend of mine played it. I thought it was good, slightly indifferent about it.

Although I love Virtua Tennis to death, I have to say that Activision Tennis for the 2600 is the most intense tennis game I have played. A friend and I once played a single serve back and forth for nearly three hours. Our eyes were bleeding at the end, but it was hella fun, and when I finally got that point, it was one of my most satisfying video gaming moments... my friend, however, was crushed.
