I'm using a recent (maybe latest? don't know) version of mame on XP, and Bakraid works fine there. Also it works fine on XMAME in linux. can you be more specific about the rom version you're trying to use and the version of mame?

It's much hated game around here because of the chaining system but once you wrap your head around it, you'll find it's pretty flexible as far as enemy chaining goes.Hardstepah wrote:k thnx got it workin, loving it. ive never had a chance to play it til now

Enable Joystick input under options/default options, under controllers, checkmark it. Mine sees my Gravis Gamesuckpro Pad well enough, checking the option allows you to use it.

hmmm there doesnt seem to be any kind of check boxes. i remember running mame32 and there being a menu with the list of games etc, but i just click mame exe and it brings up a menu fulle screen (dos maybe?) says controller options but it only works for the keybord. i'll try running a diffrent mame i guess.

Suiciding to freeze your multiplier is what gets a lot of people worked up the most. Look at the video of someone losing all their lives to that first boss only to get a score so high they have like four lives at the beginning of the next stage, something like that I think. Once I knew about that it was hard to look at the game in the same way again. Which is a shame because it's sooo damn good. I love the levels and I think the choice of ships might actually be some of the best balance in a shmup, at least of those going past the usual 2 or 3 ships, but that's debatable.
Hardstepah, also, you should get a MAME with a GUI such as Wolfmame. Google it. I like version .99. A lot of people who have bad experiences with MAME I eventually find out didn't use one with a GUI and I didn't even think to ask. It's a lot more confusing that way for the average computer user.

I play the game for fun and I've had a blast
if I played to get the highest score then I'd probably hate it.
To be honest, that's why we play these shmups (to 1cc AND get high scores), but if you can look past that and play to 1cc, you'll find it's worthwhile (not to mention the game is pretty damn easy if this is your only goal).

You can find a lot of old MAME versions here. Personally, I use MAME Plus .104u1. To get your controller working in most MAMEs that use a GUI, go to Options --> Default game options, click on the "Controllers" tab, and check "Enable joystick input."
Unlike most emulators, the zip files for MAME ROMs change somewhat frequently. You can use MAWS to look up a rom and see when and if it was changed, and there are torrents of MAME "rollbacks" on Pleasure Dome that can be used in conjunction with the most recent romset to roll back a rom so it works with an older version. But sometimes all you need to do is rename a file.FrederikJurk wrote:Try an older version, 0.99b used to work just fine for me when I had XP. Newer versions tend to say that files are missing even though the same romset works fine on an older release.

"Man, this is a superplay? The guys dies already on the fist boss" until he got THREE extends at the beginning of stage two. I don´t have the exact number of how much the player suicides during that replay (25 times maybe?), but it´s a technique to keep an enemy chain going.

Think about it. You voluntarily KILL YOURSELF to keep a CHAIN GOING. In Battle Garegga you killed yourself to keep the rank low, but here it is absolutely necessary to score high. Just trying to get high scores by collecting medals isn´t going to give you even a fraction of the score you´ll get with chaining let alone chaining AND collecting medals. It´s nothing I´d want for yourself but this really is the climax of hilarious score systems. People complain a lot about rank in Garegga, but this here is A LOT funnier. But only for a very elite group of players. I can´t think of a bigger risk/reward factor than this game.
I used to wonder that what if I completely chain the first boss, grab the whole bunch of extends and then try to play for survival with those added lives, but chaining Axebeak is already so complicated I just forgot about it.

If you're just going for a normal clear, there are a few spots where you can push the multiplier up without suiciding and earn one or two extends before the Cloud stage. I cleared it a bunch of times before I learned the scoring system. If you do the Axebeak trick right and pull 10 million plus from the first stage and hoard all those lives, the rank would shoot up pretty fast.FrederikJurk wrote:

You can also pull close to 2 million more from the beginning of the Naval stage with some creative bombing and probably close to another million or so from chaining portions of the Seaside stage. Better get to work.FIL wrote:Last time I pulled off the 4mil trick with blade owl on stage 1 of the normal route, I didn't even make it to the cloud stage.

I've been playing the game on and off for 2 years and I've only pulled 10 million from Axebeak once. I alwyas wind up destroying one of the wing batteries with a bomb so the most I regularly pull from him is 8.5 million.
