Help me identify this Shmup?

Hello people. I am looking for a shmup I used to play in arcade shops but which the title eludes me. I can describe it so if anyone has the time to read the description and maybe remember it I would be grateful: You were a pilot flying your ship as always in a side scrolling way. You could upgrade your ships weapons as well but you could also fire a freezing missile which when hit a target it froze standing still. When you approached the frozen target and collide with it you weren't destroyed but fused with it taking its form and abilities. So you became a robot, an alien fighter etc. If this host was destroyed you once more transformed to a fighter. I am sorry that is all I remember. If anyone can help me it would be great.

The horizontal viewpoint + enemy capturing weapon makes it sound a bit like G-Darius, but the description isn't quite close enough that I'd say it definitely is.

edit: There's also Gaiares for Genesis / MD, but of course that's not an arcade game.
