Definitely.

Japanese in general are ironically frugal: Electricity is expensive, so electronic products are used sparingly. Yet, houses don't have the slightest bit of insulation, which requires far more energy to warm/cool them. This is what I refer to as "Consumption Fist Fucking".

Yeah, the lack of insulation is psychotic. To answer his question, don't they stay open until at least 10pm? It depends on the location, I"m sure. The big game centers in Tokyo are open from 10am until at least 10 or 11, if I'm not mistaken.

Wild guess: cheap houses are cheaper to rebuild after earthquakes.

...or gojira attacks. (ducks)

That and they can be torn down easily when a new occupant moves in. Speaking in broad strokes, the Japanese hate secondhand shit, and that includes houses. You move to another piece of land, there's no way in HELL you're living in something someone else has occupied; you tear it down and build a new home.

There's nothing like seeing your breath when you get up to take that first leak of the morning.

Anyways, re: game centers, it seems to be 10-12pm, depending on location. Most of the small ones close to where I live shut down at midnight, but a handful of the ones I've gone to in Tokyo close a little earlier in that 10-11 range.

Yep, most arcades close from 10-12 in the evening, depending on location. I believe HEY Arcade in Akihabara closes at like 11:30 or midnight, so people still have time to catch the last train home!

One of my local game centers, which is about 10 minutes far from Ikebukuro, is open 10am-11:55pm. It's really small, and half of it is shit like mahjong, baseball card game and Magical Quiz Academy.

The other one is in Donqui Hote (spelling?), and I think it's open 11am-5am. It's much bigger, but really noisy since it shares space with those damn fruit machines.

I don't know why, but i expected all Japanese arcades to be open all night. My fantasies are crushed.

Don Quixote, perhaps? It wouldn't be in any way related to the chain of "All the weird shit you could possibly want, plus we're open almost 24 hours!" Don Quixote shops in Shinjuku and Akihabara, would it?

It's the same. They have stores at alot of places, not just Shinjuku and Akiba. I get most of my necessary shit from there.

Eldon (edit: also Tyrell).

Good topic :D

I wonder if the old computer use saw about turning on and off computers shortening the lifespan applies to arcade machines (with ROMs, not a hard drive). You'd get some expansion/contraction of the connections due to warming up and cooling down, perhaps. Probably not much if it's ventilated at all, though.
