How's the DC/PS1 remake of Centipede?...

Post by dave4shmups »

I love Centipede, and I know that like Asteriods, it was given the make-over treatment. The DC version, not surprisingly, is supposed to have the best graphics, but how is the game otherwise?

I like it, but the DC version is a kind of weak port of the PC version. It has some framerate problems and the character can get stuck in objects. The game itself is kind of like a combination of centipede and rampart where you try to prevent the centipede from destroying the cities. The DC version has an excellent port of the arcade version with it, but there are collections out there with great ports/emulations of centipede and other classics too.

Good question-- I was wondering about this too, and about the latest DS version on Retro Atari Arcade.
Also, wasn't Space Invaders also given a makeover on the PS1? Any thoughts about how that turned out?
(Not trying to hijack the thread, but in case Centipede is thought to be off topic, surely Space Invaders is not)

(It just occurred to me that I was making an odd asumption in my last post, namely, that Space Invaders is less obviously a borderliner than Centipede. I guess I was thinking that because Space Invaders is a space shooter it is closer to paradigm shmups than Centipede. Perhaps this is right, but it's more plausible that they are equally borderliners, now that I think about it. So please ignore my previous justification for including mention of Space Invaders. But please feel free to respond to my question as well!)

I don't think either game is off topic, both games have enemies that move or scroll down to you that you shoot, and that ought to qualify them both as shmups.

I own it, and it's absolutely fantastic! It's VERY fun to play, there's all sorts of power ups, the bosses (which appear ever 10 levels) are some of the toughest in any shmup ever made, IMO, and the intro movie is outstanding. The game has 100 levels, but you can save your game, and you can unlock the original 1978 black and white Space Invaders arcade game!

Atari Anthology might have the 2600 version of Space Invaders, but I'm positive that it doesn't have the arcade original-you'd have to get the import PS2 Space Invaders Anniversary for that. That collection was released in Japan and Europe, WHY it didn't get a US release I'll never understand-it's not like Space Invaders was unpopular anywhere in the world! :?

Thanks for the response, dave4shmups. As I looked into it further, I found it difficult to determine whether the Activision PS1 Space Invaders is the same as the Japanese PS1 Space Invaders released by Taito. Anyone know the answer to this?

The unlockable Space Invaders game is exactly the same as the original Taito Space Invaders. The updated game, is different-you still have waves of invaders coming down towards you, but you get power ups for shooting four of the same color, and there are the bosses as well.

The Activision Space Invaders is different than the Japanese PS1 Space Invaders. The Japanese PS1 Space Invaders is similar to the Virtual Boy Space Invaders with the 3D mode and the classic modes, but in color. The US Activision PSX Space Invaders was released under the title of "Space Invaders X" in Japan.
