Is Persona 3 any good?
I'm really interested in picking up a new RPG, but it seems have a VERY J-Pop atmosphere. Don't know what to think about that one.
It isn't over realiant on cutscenes and stuff is it?(like the new FFs or Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3)

It definetely doesnt rely on cutscenes. I can't play metal gear solid games for that reason. If you have ever played any of the shin megami tensei games you should have somewhat of an idea on what to expect. Basically, solid turn based goodness with the added unique dating like sim. In my opinion the game is well polished overall. It's lengthy and interesting enough that it's absolutely worth the money.

I thought it was a very good RPG, and I don't like a lot of console RPGs.evil_ash_xero wrote:I'm really interested in picking up a new RPG, but it seems have a VERY J-Pop atmosphere. Don't know what to think about that one.

The beginning is quite scripted and lengthy, but after that it gives you a good deal of freedom.
The game is a cross between a dungeon crawl and a social sim. You'll go to school, choose who to hang out with or what to do after school, and then you can optionally enter the game's one dungeon (Tartarus) on any given evening.
The people you hang out with during the day will increase your social links which will allow you to create more powerful personas to use in combat at night.
I know it sounds dumb the way I just described it, but it's a really good game. The combat system is turn-based and always requires thought, for the enemies make an honest effort to kill you. The game mostly lets you play at your own pace, with scripted story-events happening on certain calendar dates while you budget the majority of your time between friends and dungeon-exploring.
In terms of Japanese flavor, the game does take place in a Japanese high school. So, yeah, the setting is very Japanese. Most of the music is kinda j-pop style, but I was never bothered by it.
I'll quit rambling. It's actually highly recommended by me, but I realize that means nothing to somebody who doesn't know me or my tastes. I'd go for it. Worst case scenario, you re-sell it on eBay and get your money back. It's difficult to find in most areas.

Nocturne is better! but it is rise in price
Persona 3 is rise in price as we speak. If you see it at the store (I saw some at Meijers before Christmas) pick it up and give it a try. If you are not like it, you should be able to sell it and not loose money or even make extra money if it is continue its price rise.
but,
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne >>>>>>>> Persona 3

I've never played Nocturne unfortunately. But frekin' Digital Devil Saga 1 was absolutely wonderful. In many ways I prefer it over P3. The soundtrack is truly great and the overall setting/mood of the game is perfection. (it rains 24/7...i love the rain) However, P3 is a newer game and shows it...it looks nicer and has tons of depth.
I loved Shin Megami Tensei on the Super Famicom. So weird and creepy. I havn't really enjoyed one since. I was tempted to give P3 a go, but I know I'd just play it for four hours before it just sits on my shelf for the rest of eternity. SMT:DDS sucked huge balls and the music made me want to cut myself.
Agreed. The DDS spinoff might have paled a bit compared to the incredible Nocturne but I thought they were both very solid games in their own right. Hell, DDS 2 even has a vertical shmup minigame!nlen83 wrote:First time I've ever heard that.DJ Rectal Prolapse wrote:SMT:DDS sucked huge balls and the music made me want to cut myself.![]()
That game kicked some ass..hard. Worth every penny...
I bought Persona 3 upon its release but have not had a chance to even open it yet.

Absolutely. Too bad Nocturne is very difficult to find these days. Fortunately, I ended up buying it randomly when it first came out, despite knowing little about the series at the time.Sonic R wrote: but,

Persona 3's biggest problem (and you'll probably call me weird for this) is that it's too god damn ridiculously long. The game has lots of little things that aren't too great about it, but it all gets amplified to being major problems because the game is 80+ hours long. Frankly if they had cut out about 20-30 hours worth of trudging through the random dungeon (which is absolutely horrible, btw), it would have been so much better of a game.

I have digital devil saga 1 and 2 and nocturne all waiting to be completed, about halfway through nocturne. Hard but extremely rewarding title, dante rocks and that rock metal soundtrack rules. Its been so long since I played it that'll probably start over, really messed up replacing character special moves got rid of focus very early. Great bosses and music in all megaten games.
I'll be picking up persona 3 when its comes to europe. Heard it is pretty good and looks dark which I really need after playing FF rpgs for to long. I'd recommend nocturne to any rpg fan but its tough as nails, battle system is very solid.

It's a cool ending but it's a pretty big pain to get unless you know how to exploit some stuff to break the game. The main thing is just to make sure you don't go into the final dungeon before you decide, because once you've entered the last dungeon you can't finish the "true demon" sidequest to get that ending.Jon wrote:^^^Make sure you shoot for the "true demon" ending. Very cool final boss fight if I do say so myself.
It's barely even a dungeon crawl really, the dungeon is just randomly generated and not even slightly interesting. It's more just like a constant tedious grind in between enjoyable story segments and dating/life sim parts.MX7 wrote: Well that's any slight vestive of inclination I had for getting this completely evoporated.
It's a shame, the dating sim aspect appeals loads to me, but dungeon crawling just isn't my thing at all anymore.
There's an Easy difficulty, but I'm not sure if it actually makes you level up faster at all or just makes the battles more easy/boring.
