The Darius soundtrack sounds awesome in game, and in the context of a game, and I love it, but if I heard that on a night out I'd assume I was lost in some dodgy Eurotechno night in 1992, and I'd run for the fire escape.
I can just imagine muscular blonde haired men in grey vests banging kettle drums with neon paint splashing about them as a DJ spins the tunes. In an abandoned factory probably.

Speaking of Darius remixes... the Amiga version of Darius has some great remixed tracks by Uncle Art (Dave Lowe, famous for the amazing IK+ music). Nowadays they may sound a bit dated, but they still beat the original music easily. Uncle Art also remixed the simplistic music of Xain'd Sleena and turned it to really memorable tracks in the Soldier of Light version.
Actually most Amiga coin-op conversions have kick ass remixes of the original music, just like the C64 music of Commando is far superior to the Senjou no Ookami music. The japanese had all these great melodies, but totally wrong sounds/samples. Strider, Ninja Spirit, P47 Thunderbolt/Freedom Fighter/Phantom Fighter and many, many others.
This new album sounds part cheesy, part cool. Waiting for reviews...

Agreed, although I'll be downloading the full release when it's out to make sure I'm not missing anything. The original soundtracks are truly classics (all thanks to Ogura), but I'm getting sick of this fusion techno aesthetic thingy Basiscape and SuperSweep have been milking for the past five years or what ever. Some of these guys are just too afraid of making something new.DC906270 wrote:thanks for saving me some money zinger, that sounds awful

kick ass remake on Amiga is Ghouls n Ghosts, blows every other ghouls n ghosts music away. The Amiga tunes should have been put as bonus on the Capcom Generation disc.

A quick review of this album.
I don't know all the names, but in case I can post them.
Sasou Ayako has made three dance/eurotechno remixes: Captain Neo, Boss scene 2, Jamming, plus one electro-pop/rock song (very 80's stuff), Inorganic Beat . Captain neo is probably the best, very fast eurobeat tempo and quick elegant re-arrangement (yeah, the genre notwithstanding).
Shinji Hosoe has made a remix of King Fossil's theme and Cosmic Airway, both on the big party/happy hardcore stuff (sounds like Scooter's stuff made well, if you know Scooter). Quite good as well.
Takanori Sato has remixed Olga Breeze and say Papa, the first is electro-pop and the second is on the more fast-pacey happy hardcore/gabber side (well, I'd say no more than 120 BPM, eh).
Yoshimi Kudo has made a remix of the Iron Hammer boss in fusion with strong use of synth sounds.
Kimihiro Abe has made a *touching* acoustic rock version of Muse Valley, easily the best song on the album. The original song was a masterpiece, so he could do worse...
Noriyuki Kamirura has remixed War Oh!, again electro-pop but mixed with the fusion/calypso tempo of the original theme.
Azuso Chiba re-arranged Planet blue has madea soft fusion/acoustic rock re-arrangement of Planet blue, also very classy.
...and Manabu Namiki has re-arranged (fusion bordering on the easy jazz, a la Pat Metheny) the final boss theme of the first Darius, which then fades in a re-arrangement of the *original* boss theme. Other superb song, I'd say.
So, songs from Darius I and II, re-arranged following popular '80s styles. Superb material for the Darius fan and VGM appreciator alike, and hopefully first chapter followed by a similar project for Gaiden and Genesis.

Zuntata strictly speaking do not depend from Taito for jobs (they work for tv shows and anime's OST, from what I know). This album is actually a Zuntata/Basisscape/Supersweep collaboration, interestingly.
Taito's G.Darius and Raycrisis were the swan's songs for the company's shmups line, as the last shmups produced via internal development. They offered a beginninng for their main series, instead of an ending. That was 1997 and 1998, so this chapter has been long finished, alas.
Also, if I get it right, this album should have been a celebration of Darius' 20th birthday (a tad delayed, though). The booklet includes some pages of the old US comic, quite cheesy.

Taito can keep making albums IMO, but I agree that a new Darius is necessary.Fighter17 wrote:Stop making albums Taito and make a new Darius.
But that's not going to happen.
Since their shmup development teams aren't with them, let them finance a project for G.Rev to make the new Darius to run on Type X2 as a widescreen hori. Hire OGR for the soundtrack if possible, with the Darius Remix CD artists as a 2nd choice.
I've just ordered this CD, as well as "Kaidan o doko mademo orite iko" (Keep Walking Down the Steps) by Joutohei Nakayama - Norihiro Furukawa, whose new nick is Raiden Nakayama.

At least they can give us Darius I & II on XBLA or PSN. Albeit letterboxed, this would look great in 720p on a widescreen HD set. The vertical resolution could be doubled to 448.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:Where's my new fucking next gen Darius?
If G.Darius was the beginning, what we need is a Darius 4 picking up the story where Gaiden left off.
