First new score in years, also my first time to stage 5:

Davey 4,713,761 3582 C 4 Roll 5

This game is euphoric when everything falls into place.

Still trying to make it to ST4 boss. Getting more consistent at reaching ST4, but I have an uncanny knack of losing a life on ST2. Usually this is the result of the midway ships (first wave comes in a dice-5 formation), where speed and greed often get the better of me. :(

On the plus side, boss3 is nowhere near as tough as he first seemed. :)

I find it helps to sort yourself during the item carriers before those ships appear if you are still chasing dancing men or have ended up on the wrong side of the screen by accident. Just stop firing and get through the last of the spam and pick up any stray DM. Then kill the last item carrier and quick kill the next 2 waves.

IIRC the order of kill is point blanking the far right, then left to get the middle one, the other right one and then far left for the two last ships (with bomb this can be done slightly different). The second wave is the same, but reverse sides.

Yeah, current tactic is not to bomb immediately (I use a bomb at the end of the stage normally to clear the green arrow shooters or the last tank thing, so I don't usually go in with a free bomb floating). I'm just firing normally through both blue arrows and green lines (this will probably only work with the B ship) until it gets nasty and then bombing with point blanking to get one or both turrets dead.

Depending on how long the blue line w/ green aimed lasers attack lasts (good solid roll shots during the green orb attack will pretty much end this attack as soon as it begins) you can just dodge the final attack until it looks like a bomb will finish it. The worst scenario is getting killed with several bombs in stock, so I wouldn't be afraid to bomb at the mere hint of trouble.

Have you watched the Bomb YMN vid at superplay yet?

It's a good watch, especially the nice stage 4 strategies

...and there's some depressingly awesome boss dodging for 4 and 5...

Yeah, I only recently figured out that the carriers trigger the following wave of ships. Just need to keep at ST2 until I get a solid routine down, especially for that midway section.

Actually, I've been purposely avoiding replays for Dangun. It's a totally new game to me (and my first PCB), so my plan was to get as far as I possibly can, and then perhaps look at some vids when I hit that "wall of no progression". I find superplays can be a bit depressing to watch, especially when you haven't even mastered the first few stages. Plus, there's that tendency to try and copy strategies. I'm making this bitch my own. :)

Out of interest, are you using MAME or playing the PCB?

I'm MAMEing for the foreseeable future I think. If I bought a supergun I'd probably end up impulse buying Futari & Pork and then owing CapitalOne an even more ridiculous amount of money

Yeh, save your dosh mate. There'll be a Cave compilation ported to some Apple console in 2015 anyway - probably plugs directly into the brain.

An aside: Thought I was gonna beat your Donpachi score tonight. Just broke the 6mil mark. Damn rear suicide attacks.

Witnessed ST4 boss for the first time tonight - almost beat him using only one bomb too. F'lucky run most probs. Getting less intimidated by ST3 in general. :)

NORMAL PLAY, non uo-poko:

RGC 2,706,437 2476 B 4 Bomb 4

Easily my best run to date until ST4, at which point it went pear-shaped. Quite surprised I broke my record tonight - was about to throw the board out the fucking window after what seemed like 100 credits on ST1.

TIME ATTACK, non uo-poko

RGC 1,148,355 1122 B 4 Bomb

Why don't people play this game anymore?

I'm back playing this again RGC

It was never highly played by forum members - DF is one of the least accessable cave game in it's brutality by the 2nd stage and the morale-sapping difficulty in even making it onto the hi score board. Many also say it lacks the scoring depth of their other games, which they may have a point with.

Forcing players to use annoyingly twitchy levels of ship speed was one of the reasons I never warmed to it initially though.

Great to hear I'm not the last masochist on these boards.

Actually, I'd say that morale sapping potential applies to nearly, if not all Cave games. It's just that you notice the credits going in more with Dangun because the levels seem so short and intense. It takes a good 10-15 mins to get to ST4 Mushi midboss, only to fuck it up completely and have to start all over again. That equates to about 4 credits on Dangun, for me anyway since I'm still shite.

The next milestone for me will be reaching ST5, so watch this space!

They're really, really poor mate :)

I've played it a few times, but I was always thinking I could be practicing stage 4 or 5 instead of playing this. Once I hit a wall in my scoring and stop enjoying it (which will probably happen when I need to start maxing DM on stages for the bonus, or the ST5 boss) I'll give it a proper go.

-Edited to make more sense.

Hahah i was wondering about that. I've been playing this a bit and my scores are an order of magnitude below the default hi-score board. I just figured like typical cave games i needed to read a dissertation to figure out what elaborate scoring mechanic i was missing - guess not. :P

C-Type definitely helps for time attack:

TIME ATTACK, non uo-poko

RGC 1,415,095 1272 C 4 Bomb

Does anyone know what the collectable icons are half way through the time attack stage? I've spotted a heart, a question mark, and another.

Also, I can't figure out what the disadvantage is of getting killed in this mode, other than a second or two wasted. Any clues?

I have no real experience of time attack, but I'd guess at the time wasted (which means not triggering more enemies) and the loss of not getting +5 on every item carrier (because of powering up) is maybe what holds back your score. Remember also not to drop any DM during a run - although this is assuming that the time attack works the same way as normal arcade.

Sik will undoubtably be able to answer this better though...

I've only played normal ship time attack a few times.

Ultimately, no matter what ship you use, getting the highest possible score in Time Attack breaks down to a few things:

- Minimal deaths (with the Uo-Poko cat, you'll want to suicide once to gain invincibility for a short time in order to get disco men from the two lines of enemies that are side by side, right next to each other with no space, that come out from the right-bottom corner of the screen toward the end of the level. With any of the other ships, you do not want to die at all. It is better not to suicide in this case because you then lose your +5 for both power up types and bomb.)

- Killing enemies immediately (so memorization of the entire level is necessary).

- Collection of disco men and power ups immediately (Don't let disco men go off the top of the screen).

- Destruction of all poles that come from the ground (again, memorization of all poles is necessary. You'll want to learn where they are and make a path through the level based on their locations.)

- Minimum bomb usage with the normal ships (As I said before, I haven't really played normal ship time attack much at all. However, it would seem that bomb usage would be a detriment to score since no other enemies can come out for the duration of the bomb. Therefore, it seems like it would be best to never bomb.)

Deaths are very bad except for the one case I noted, especially in certain areas. When you die, this gives the chance for enemies to spend time on the screen, meaning you aren't making progress through the entire set of enemies available in the level, and you are getting fewer, if any, disco men than you were going to get before. Dying is even worse with the normal ships because you need to recollect enough power ups and bombs to receive the +5 disco men again. Also, you lose the shot power and bombs you had.

The Time Attack level does have a limited amount of enemies. I'll say it's impossible to complete the entire thing with the normal ships. With the Uo-Poko cat, it is actually possible to have a few seconds left over at the end of the level if you were to do everything nearly perfect. You can still reach the potential maximum score with the Uo-Poko cat if you make only one or two minor mistakes (you can even afford to die accidentally, depending on where it happens).

Toward the middle of the stage, when you shoot the ground, these little boxes appear. If you keep shooting them, they will turn into these squares that alternate between a question mark and a heart. This cycles (1q-2h-3q-4h-repeat). The question mark seems to serve no purpose for the Uo-Poko cat. I'm not sure if it serves a purpose for the normal ships, maybe it gives you max shot power? If you are trying to play perfectly you will never want to grab a question mark, you will just want to grab the heart the 2nd time it shows. The 1st heart, if you grab it, will make two shot power items appear. If you grab the heart the 2nd time it shows, it will release a bomb item.

It's unfortunate how far superior the Uo-Poko cat is for this (and the main game as well) compared to the normal ships. The only "downfall" to the Uo-Poko cat is you have no bomb and some players find it difficult to control due to the speed. While you do not have a bomb, your second button serves the function of changing between A-B-C type shot. You alway have maximum shot power, so collecting any shot power ups or bomb items will give you +5 automatically, even if you have just died. The speed increase is very beneficial once you learn to deal with it.

This can all apply to the normal game too, I guess. Venom would be the one to talk with about the normal game since he's spent a great deal of time on it. I haven't played it much with any of the ships.

Wow, thanks sikraiken! :D

I'm relieved there are hardly any real secrets to scoring well - it's pretty much the same as the normal game. Namely, kill shit quick, get DM, and don't die.

The only thing I didn't follow was this:

Sorry, poles?

That and the ridiculously incessant noise it makes!

While you're moving around the screen in time attack, you'll notice sometimes that there are little circles that blink on the ground. If you stay over them long enough, they come out of the ground (they look like poles). If you shoot them once they are completely out of the ground, an item will come out. There are plenty of them throughout the level.

Yes, the noise the cat makes is annoying... : ) I guess you could just get used to it, but I used to mute the sound and put on some other music back when I would play time attack over and over.

Nice going unsane. :) Still surprised how few scores are posted here.

Had another breakthrough tonight - actually saw the 4th boss. Shame it was after lifeing it to ST4 and then losing everything in one fell swoop. Anyway:

RGC 2,953,925 2597 B 4 Bomb 4

I have a Wolfmame inp. file of a 2.5m run from yesterday. I'll host if anyone wants to laugh at it.

Javel 3,842,294 3657 B 3 Roll 5

Lost disco men several times in stage 5 :/ Third boss requires at least two bombs. Thats no good, I have to figure out his patterns.
