Wow. Thanks for the link. It's one helluva comprehensive list including pseudo-shmups.

I need to play more Megadrive/Genesis shmups. I'm currently playing Eliminate Down and Gleylancer on my Genesis-3.

cool site. another site i use for genesis curiosity is www.genesiscollective.com . they should have more screens for each game though, or at least for shmups.

Not a bad list, certainly interesting to read some thoughts on games most people dismiss as crap. I'll go try out Fire Mustang and Heavy Unit now.

Not a complete list though. The fact it had no MUSHA is weird enough. Never mind they neglected my favorite Genny shmup, Fire Shark. And Twinkle Tale deserves some press. And where's Raiden Trad?

Yeah, come to think of it, that site isn't particularly complete, despite the name...

I like the site, though I don't like how it labelled Whip Rush as an R-Type clone. It's very different from R-Type and a great game in its own right IMO.

The site is composed of three long pages: Horizontal shmups, Vertical shmups, and Best of the Rest. The links are all the way at the bottom. It's bad navigation putting the links all the way at the bottom of a really long page.

They include MUSHA and Fireshark in the Vertical shmups section. I would say it's a rather complete listing including iffy and pseudo shmups in the Best of the Rest page.

Holy cow, I didn't even notice that all the games mentioned were horizontal.

Incidentally, I tried out Fire Mustang and I really like it, so the site has definitely served its purpose.

How are you playing this game? Through emulation?

These days I'm using the Tototek flash cart. It's a great product and allows you to play the game on a real Megadrive/Genesis.

Alright, I've read through it all now, and yes, very comprehensive. He's inconsitent about his so-called Forgotten Five. When he first mentions them, he says they are GleyLancer, Eliminate Down, BattleMania 2, Panorama Cotton, and Undead Line. In his synopsis of Twinkle Tale, he also refers to it as a member of the Forgotten Five. And at least two (PC and BM2) are said to be the most expensive

Why no Ranger-X? That game is about as much a borderline shmup as Atomic Robo-Kid and Subterrania are.

Ranger-X doesn't have autoscrolling like Atomic Robo-Kid. Sub-terrania I agree but I guess it has "ship bias."

The site, Sega-16, has a similar featured article outlining the run'n'gunners on the Genesis. Written by the same guy. This should satisfy your need for Ranger X:

Sega-16 is my new favorite Sega site. It's run by TNL forum member Melf. Ben's site www.classicgaming.com/saturn is another I have bookmarked.

Pages 2 and 3 have links at the top as well as the bottom.

Not true. :D
Probably the most expensive of the "Forgotten Five" after Panorama Cotton, this is one of those games that is actually worth its price.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I appreciate the kind words.

You know, I'd seen this article a couple of weeks ago and thought it was awesome.

As someone who's played through and reviewed a number of Genny shmups, I really loved that someone snagged all of them and gave little capsules of them so interested people can get a quickie opinion.

Stuff like this is a great service to the retro-shooter community, as where else can you get info on so many games as quickly?

My congrats and thanks to you!

Besides, it's gratifying to know I've downloaded every worthwhile shmup my crappy Genesis emulator can handle...... Well, really, there's only a couple I'd like to try that I can't — Sol-Deace, for one......and as I mentioned on another thread, my emu can't handle Magic Girl that well (blank gray backgrounds).

To be honest, I wish more people did things like this for every classic system. When I'm bored, I LOVE to find things like this article that simply talk a lot about a bunch of games. That's how I came to love shmups.com and really get into playing these games again.

Thanks! I plan to do one of these for every genre eventually (fighting games are next).

Overdrive, feel free to contribute a review or two (or ten!) if you'd like. I'd be happy to post 'em. :)

Wow...reading your Megadrive/MegaCD RPG section almost made me cry...I thought I was the only person in the world who appreciated Vicsen 357 or knew it existed....

Yeah, great nostalgic website. MD games aren't given much recognition nowadays. Strange that I always thought it was a longtime site but it seems it's only been less than a year...

Did later versions of Fhey Area really say Faeria on the side?

...where's Langrisser II? You mentioned Vixen 357, which was based on the Langrisser I engine, so I assume you consider them SRPGs. Come on, you gotta have arguably the best RPG on the MD included.

Are you using Gens? And do you have the confirmed working ROM?

The SEGA Classics Collection review at the site has a major error in it. Some of the games in it do in fact have extras, especially Fantasy Zone. I don't like how Fantasy Zone was compared to Super Fantasy Zone on the Genesis. I didn't like the "stick to the Genesis" comment either. That's fine for Golden Axe, but for the others, I enjoy playing both the remakes and other versions of the games.

What I like about that site is that after reading it, you realize how much of a joke the "Genesis vs SNES" wars really was. It's so obvious that the Genesis absolutely raped the SNES in almost every possible genre, except MAYBE RPGs.

It's true. I was huge SNES kid when the war was going on, but in the last three or four years it's become clear to me that the Genesis was THE system of that era. SNES had the colors and the RPG's but Genesis was the hardcore kids system of choice then and now. If it came down to it, you could melt my SNES collection to a puddle if it meant keeping even a few of my Genesis games.

Extras as in interviews, artwork, flyers, etc. That the individual games have a few tiny in-game bonuses isn't the same as what Atari and Midway have offered in their collections for the same price.

Extras are extras and the review made it sound like the SEGA collection has no extras at all. I also get the impression that you didn't unlock all of the extras in Fantasy Zone. IMO, it's the gameplay that's important, not the extras anyway. I hardly use the extras in the Midway and Atari collections.

Unlike the other collections, the SEGA classics collection is a collection of updated games, not the originals. IMO, the games are updated very well (except for Golden Axe), even though the graphics don't take full advantage of the PS2. Also, the games look more like early DC games than PS One games IMO. Also, Tant-R and Bonanza Bros are both great games, despite being more obscure, so I see no problem with their inclusion.

That article helped me get in to Trouble Shooter. That game rocks!

I agree about Twin Cobra Genesis too. What happened to that game? The graphics don't look anything like the arcade and the screen space is cut way too short. BTW, If I remember correctly, Treco was actually a division of Sammy that made games for the Genesis.

One little thing, Would you mind changing the Divine Sealing screenshot? It's a real turn off from the site for me.
