Judging by the high score thread, 42 people apparently have. That's over half of the number of people that voted so Ketsui easily could have ranked.Dandy J wrote:NO ONE CAN PLAY ITNTSC-J wrote:Looks like Ketsui got shafted yet again. Shameful.

Stargate / Defender 2 (ARC/PS2/XBOX/GC/etc.) ??!!
In the honorable mention?
I would have hoped Konami's Scramble would have done better.
The GBA & PC versions look cool:

I'm just happy Radiant Silvergun didn't make the top 5jp wrote:This list needs to be a completely different list. Worst one yet I'd say.
what a relief!
APB a top performer?
That I'm thrilled by. That's probably the best thing about the list.
I'd also like to note if the REAL Black Label Ibara was released on the PS2 port, it would easily have made the top 25. It's what the original should have been.
Seeing an Eugene Jarvis arcade masterpiece from 1981 (an Arena shmup by my definition) on the list is most definitely NOT a "flaw", IMO.God wrote:-Only 3 people voted for it.j^aws wrote:glad to see Stargate up there...
-Looks like it made the HM list just because you put your whole vote behind it.
-Seems like a big flaw in the voting system.
That looks like the Atari 2600 version... My vote was for the far superior, original 6-button Arcade version, with the 2-way vertical stick... and Stargate >>> Scramble, IMO.ST Dragon wrote:Stargate / Defender 2 (ARC/PS2/XBOX/GC/etc.) ??!!

Hell, I even upped my support for it this year.
It just had it's momentum last year I guess. Now it's back to around the position it had the years before.
Only really positive about this list is DOJ finally entering the top 10 and Border Down hanging in there and even managing to climb a little.
Oh and I would have hope for an honourable mention at least for Silversword, now more people have actually played it.
Well, there's always next year.

...info on the game and some strategy.
There are some 'butchered' versions around with auto-thrust; but the original arcade was designed to be played with manual-thrust and 'reverse' mapped to a button: This gives you 'finer' control. Also, 'invisio' is your friend, contrary to what some reviews say... it can be used for both offence and defence...

!
The mainstream games ranked highest - perhaps due to exposure. ie. Gradius V, RS, Ika.
Ketsui didn't rank - again due to Lack of exposure. Simply that.
Personally, I'm glad to see Border Down and APB making it high.
Now.....will anyone actually play Border Down

Worst list since I've been here:
-no r-type
-no strikers
-zanac neo off the charts
-espgaluda and mushi getting way too much love
-do people actually play DOJ? Regularly? Enjoy!
-and how does DOJ climb, but Mars Matrix free fall?
-I like APB, but 4th best? how does it go from chartless to #4 overall?
-overall there's a lack of appreciation for shmup history here
-still no proper cute-em-up in top 25
...
This is nonsense. Honestly, I've seen gaming magazines and websites with more interesting shmup lists.
Thanks, Zach, for your hard work.

Gotta love the whining in this thread. People, this list is subjective, it is an percentage of opinion poll, not a list that represents the whole of the shmupping community across the world. Just because X game didnt make the list, is ranked lower or higher than expected, and/or the list differs from what you expect the list to look like, doesn't invalidate the list, it just means that opinion on particular games has shifted and/or more/less people voted this time around. If EVERY SHMUPPER IN THE WORLD had registered to the forum and voted, we'd be seeing a much better spread of votes, and stuff like Ketsui might be in the top 10.
Quit bitching.
Thanks Zach for doing this again. You must get a chuckle out of the following "discussion" every year, right? ^_-

The bitching is half the reason I read this shit 3 years in a row.

Most all of us are in US and Europe and can't go to HEY whenever we like to see the latest stuff, or shop in Akihabara and throttle interest in the classics. I think it's easy to say our list is gonna look pretty hermetic. For 90% of us the coin-op stuff is on there because of MAME, right? I just don't think you're gonna get a very academic look at shmups from a western forum in the first place. We're all rooting for our personal favorites, the underdogs.
That being said, I like this list, if anything it will get people to play Batrider more. Woo!
(looks at professor ganson's votes)
Did you expect to give any of your votes a fighting chance by giving most all of them a middle of the road vote of 2 out of 3? Giving all your votes the same weight means none of them make that big of a dent, am I right? You just didn't want to pick favorites?
Thanks Zach!

I am glad that APB is finaly getting the attention it deserves this year. If i'd voted Sexy Parodius instead of my favourate Parodius game Parodius DA! then it might of gotten on to the top 25.
Top be honest I am just glad that most people voted for games that they actualy played as supposed to games that people say are cool. After all not all of us are exsposed to exsotic Japanese only Arcade/PS2 releases.

That's not what I mean, the flaw is how it got there.j^aws wrote:Seeing an Eugene Jarvis arcade masterpiece from 1981 (an Arena shmup by my definition) on the list is most definitely NOT a "flaw", IMO.God wrote:-Only 3 people voted for it.j^aws wrote:glad to see Stargate up there...
-Looks like it made the HM list because just because you put your whole vote behind it.
-Seems like a big flaw in the voting system.
You putting your whole pie behind stargate has the same weight as 13 people putting it at the top of a simple ranked list of 25.
A handful of games got this kind of boost: Gunbird 2, Raiden DX, Ketsui and I'm guessing they moved several ranks because of it.
No, I understood what you meant.God wrote:...

You may call it a "flaw"; but I call it a built-in mechanism, inherent in the rules: I believe it's there for when you strongly believe a shmup is lacking 'awareness'... for whatever reason: Accesibility; rarity; obscurity etc...

my sentiments are the same.Danny wrote:Top be honest I am just glad that most people voted for games that they actualy played as supposed to games that people say are cool.
I have yet to vote for DDP and I placed some votes for some games that never get close to garnering any attention on the basis that I enjoyed said game and do not need someone yelling at me saying "well this game in the series is better than that one" etc.
Thanks Zach for the complete list.
My comments:
Not so much a 25 greatest shmups of all time but more like a flavor of the year. Every year its a list of the latest and greatest shooting games. So it is making sense that Cave is the most dominant developer. I am feel that the list should be call "25 greatest shmups for 20XX"
I am voting for all the games that I have play and spend quality time with. Of note I also own every game on my list. Kudos to other folks who are voting for games they are enjoy for endless times not recommeodations or what evers.
It is also make me sad that nobody care about classic console games I am piss on for liking such games over arcade games sorry console is all I ever know sorry for being the poo poo on everyone shoes the smudge on your arcade screen
