Ahh yes, of course! I am sometimes so absorbed in the Western indie games market I forget there's an entire asian market (which is a pretty dumb thing to do on this forum )
There is a museum show in Chicago about the history of games (with lots of shooters in it) and for some reason, Warning Forever is there. Weird since it isn't a commercial release.
I don't know exactly where this one comes from, but I think that based on what I've seen recently, European shmups tend to come from a different formula than Japanese ones do. They seem to almost always have shields, and with a few exceptions, they all seem to have basically the same "10 minutes in a 3D modeler with the shininess cranked up way too high" look to the sprites (in a lot of cases, they use a 3D engine.) And they always seem to have bullet patterns that when combined with shields make the goal to not get hit too much, rather than to not get hit at all.

I think Alawar (who are publishing it) are based in Russia, and I'd hazzard a guess whoever developed it for them are too.
I agree with your comments on the use of shields - they always seem like a patch up job over a gameplay wound. I've played games where shields were ok, but not many (Blood Money on the amiga iirc had shields and that was ok in my book)

Well, the shields in Blood Money were so small that virtually every hit depleted them anyway.
And I don't think that shields are a bad thing per se (although they are indeed often used to cover up bad game design). Wings of Death, for example, made pretty creative use of shields.
or samidare, where theres a shield instead of a bomb ... but u have to use it carefully, or ull be out in the cold w/o it (since the bullet patterns are manic!) ... in this case, its not a bad design, its another way of playin the game....
and yes, i agree, that most western shmup have the shield thing to cover somethin up, since there are not very good elaborated patterns to show ... so most attacks seem to be random (so i think)...
